Great. Especially the live versions: Knebworth, Mocambo. The highlights. I hope they will play it (as an opening?) on next tour!

El Macambo is about as live as the frozen pizza I have in my fridge.

One of the best covers done by Stones.Around and Around from El Mocambo is a masterpiece.

I liked the version from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, as well as TAMI Show and NME 1965.

It's interesting that two people can hear the same track and have such different opinions. Having heard a live bootleg of the El Cocambo show, I hear no appreciable difference between it and the LYL version of Around and Around. To me, the El Mocambo version represents one of Keith Richards finest moment on record. The way he and Charlie play together on that version is a nothing short of phenominal.

While I love the 64-65 versions(especially Brians great rythm work that really compliments Keiths simple but elegant licks) I have to admit the El Macambo version is definately THE one to hear.

Around And Around (live)
(Chuck Berry)

El Mocambo Club, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, March 4 & 5, 1977,
Sounds Interchange Recording Studios, Toronto, Canada, March 6 - 8, 1977 and
Atlantic Studios, New York City, New York, May 25 - June 20, 1977

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ron Wood - electric guitar
Billy Preston - keyboards
Ollie E. Brown - percussion

I said the joint was rocking, goin' round and round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking, what a crazy sound
And they never stopped rocking, 'til the moon went down

Yeah, it sounds so sweet, I gotta take me a chance
Rose out of my seat, I just had to dance
Started moving my feet, yeah, to clapping my hands
I said the joint was a-rocking, goin' round and round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking, what a crazy sound
And they never stopped rocking, 'til the moon went down

Yeah, at twelve o'clock, yeah, the place was packed
Front doors was locked, yeah, the place was packed
And when the police knocked, those doors flew back
But they kept on rocking, goin' round and round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking, what a crazy sound
And they never stopped rocking, 'til the moon went down

Yeah, at twelve o'clock, yeah, the place was packed
Front doors was locked, yeah, the place was packed
And when the police knocked, those doors flew back
But they kept on rocking, goin' round and round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking, what a crazy sound
And they never stopped rocking, 'til the moon went down

Yeah, the joint stayed a-rocking, goin' round and round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking, what a crazy sound
And they never stopped rocking, 'til the moon went down

Produced by The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Love You Live” 2LP
(Rolling Stones Records COC 2-9001) US, September 16, 1977

I always thought Keith's El Morcamo solo on Around and Around was a little too short. Brilliantly executed though.

Imo, you can't beat the original. The 5x5 EP version blows Chuck's original away.

I agree, the studio version is my favorite as well. Tight and focused, this is a loving tribute to Berry. Recorded back in the day when the Stones consistently took other people's songs in interesting directions.

Studio version is one of their best covers and the live version on the TAMI Show is my favorite live version.

...every time I hear El Mocambo I just want to jump outta' my seat.....not a good idea while driving....opening chords hit you right in the gut....boom.

The Mocambo Aroun and around is one the stones greatest live moments. Great sound from the boogie - what a bar band.

thumbs up...correct....it's like that should be the definition of a bar band.... that tune.... in that bar.... at that moment.

'in the 70's the Dead routinely featured it in their sets - often outdoing the Stones at their own game, imo....' Never. I have never heard the Dead cover any rock record of any significance and not f it up. To start with, they have no vocalists. They yelp songs, not sing them. I don't know what the Dead were, but they were not a rock and roll band.

One of those rare occasions where I actually like the cover better than the Berry original.

Love both the studio and El Mocambo versions. But was very disheartened to learn (here) that they overdubbed guitars onto the El Mocambo live recording. Another innocent illusion shattered.

Those opening guitar triplets are hard to nail.

I love this track.

Wish I could play it properly.

Sure about around and around being overdubbed? I dont think it is

It would be unfair of me to say "Who cares?" about any "Ya-Ya's" overdubs, then criticize any LYL overdubs. I suspect the AaA recording IS overdubbed (Who cares?) because it is terrific. It is by far my favorite song on that record. The TAMI show performance of that song (as well as others) is as great a video document as the band ever did. The performance is sheer joy. It puts SAL to shame.

I believe this was according to Mathijs. Maybe he can weigh in here.

Rene, thank you as always.

Agree with GreenLady and withssoul

Although if I had one of those big old jukeboxes and a dance floor, I'd go for Mocambo. That was Keith enjoying himself.

Funnily, as much as I like them doing Berry stuff ( their last L.Queenie rendition on BtB tour was one of the highlites), Around & around from LYL/Mocambo never did it for me. It's lightyears from 69, or 71's Let it rock or 72's Bye Bye Johnny.

This has been gone over a kazillion times before, but I believe there are no confirmed guitar overdubs on Ya-Yas; just a suspected/possible one on Oh Carol. There are of course several vocal overdubs.

The Dead's version of Around & Around - taken at that slow tempo - is an abomination that should have been snuffed out in the idea stage. They manage to drain every bit of life and energy out of that song. There should have been a law passed not allowing them within 10 miles of a Chuck Berry cover. The lyrics say "the joint was rockin'!", not "the joint was full of wheezy stoned hippies".
