I'm just getting into Hank Williams and have only gotten The Gold Collection from 2005, released by Mercury. I'm looking for advice on what cds to get, the more I look into it, the more great stuff there seems to be. I need help from any and all of the Hank experts on here.

Although I consider myself a fan of Hank Williams, I'm nowhere near being an expert on his recordings. Anyway the last comp of his work I picked up is called Turn Back the Years. The songs are listed thematically. Definetely worth having imo.

For small sets try something like the basic 40 Greatest Hits
along with Alone & Forgotten .... The live stuff can be found
on the Health & Happiness Shows... But if ya wanna be holed up
in ya basement alone for a month or more then take on the massive 10 CD box-set....

Actually, Hank III sounds a lot like the old man.

Hank Williams Sr. was the real deal when it came to Country Music. The man lived the life and it showed in his songs. For completists, a new release called "Unreleased Recordings" is due at the end of the month. Apparently these were songs for the Mother's Best Flour Company which Hank sang with his band. He recorded many songs he never did elsewhere. Also, check out his alto ego Luke the Drifter. Just him and his guitar...

I remember listening to a doco in which they played 'duets' of Hank snr & son, was this the first time they did the overdub thing?

Hank III is excellent and the most country performer/artist/etc...to emerge in eons. Hank Sr. would be proud.

Anyone familiar with Hank's "Peace Will Come"?

If you're really hooked, you should go for the ( nearly ) complete set, that's been mentioned above.

The stuff I like most are his recordings/demos with his guitar as only accompaniment, those are the cd's:

"Rare Demos: First To Last" CMF-067-D
"Alone With his Guitar" Mercury 088-170-164-2

The "Unreleased Recordings" are Radio transcriptions, so only about 25% might be songs he did not do elsewhere, the rest should probably be called "Unreleased Performances/Versions"!

Some of the best radio shows I've heard are from the "Mothers Best Flour" bcasts aired on WSM from 7:15-7:30 AM 1951 (theres 3 cds worth) and also the hilarious bcst he did for "National Venereal Disease Awareness Week" !!!
But I think if ole Hank was a young Man now he would be a Whole lot more like his grandson than son(IMO) Hank III also is VERY bootleg friendly letting people set up their gear at his shows and post them on live archives(he probably has as many shows posted as just about anyone!)He can be a little intense sometime but as he says he's here to put the "D-ck In Dixie And The C-nt In Country"!

it will be interesting to compare/contrast the official releases of the Mothers Best with what's been available thru bootleg circles. I understand that they are going to release these in batches. I've got a 15-cd set on boots that I assume is all that's surfaced....

i hope they include all parts of the 15-minute weekly radio segments - some of the best parts aren't the music, imo. it's a fascinating look back at the post-war era thru the "lens" of radio in southern rural america.
