You Got The Silver - Live?
Posted by: Happy24 ()

I saw the SAL again in the cinema the last week and I have to confess that I can't get enough of the Keith's set. He sings with such intensity...I remember that many people here criticised Connection, I don't understand why, it is brilliant and the fact that it is interrupted is unforgivable.

You Got The Silver is obviously one of the highlights, just like it was during the 07 tour. It is such a great song which suits Keith so well and it is strange that they play it so seldom. And here I come to my question - was this song ever played live from the late sixties till the mid-nineties? I know it was played during the B2B tour (or was it No Security?), but was it played before? I have never heard any earlier version.

No, the 1st time they played it was 99 during No Security tour.

That was fast. Question answered, not much space for a further discussion...:-)

Yes, an easy question indeed.

But I will say that although the SAL/ABB tour version of YGTS was good....to me nothing beats the 99 No Security versions. Keith on slide, Ronnie putting in some fills, Charie banging away....the juices were flowing.

Yes, the only show I saw in '07 - El Ejido - "You Got The Silver" was the highlight. Keith's interpretation was really strong and intensive. He puts himself and his persona in it (I think he really mastered the song really in Europe 07; SAL version is just rehearsing...)

I need to say that Keith's ballads live have always been very effective, and he delivers them really beautifully.. For example, I never cared much about "Slipping Away" until I heard in Helsinki '95, and the same goes for many others ("Thru and Thru" especially). Of course, "You Got The Silver" is expection, because it has always been a classic, but Keith's new interpretaion gives a new dimension into song.

Yes I may have, but only because there is unfortunately not too many videos from the No Security tour on YouTube. The version at Shepards Bush is my favorite as is Hartford. Still, that Washington performance drives the idea home.

The No Security-version is lovely in many ways, but in front of all because of one thing: The point of the ´99-version is, to me, to see Keith not only sing, but even play the guitar.

But all in all, I personally think the Bigger Bang-version is stronger. Ronnie’s guitarplaying is very tasteful and Keith sings with such an energy and great feeling.

I actually think so, remember something like that. I tried to find the thread with the first reviews of SAL, but it is burried somewhere deep.

I realize that he can't play slide anymore but I don't understand why he doesn't play guitar at all on this song anymore.

i'd be satisfied if he could at least demonstrate the ability to chew gum and play guitar at the same time.

THE Bigger Bang tour was much better...I liked Keith standing at the Mic and Ronnie did a tremendous job on the guitar.

No, the 1st time they played it was 99 during No Security tour.

First performed during a tour, yes in 1999, but it was also played in 1995, at an impromptu concert held during the September video shoot for Like a Rolling Stone in Kingscross, London.

Mentioned on the Rolling Stones offical website

Always loved the performance of the song at Wembley in 1999.

Actually I saw it as a way of allowing some well deserved spotlight to Ronnie. Probably I'm too romantic!

Keith without a guitar in his hands seemed awkward...like a cabaret version.

ygts always one of my faourite tunes but the 2007 version was the biggest disappointment of all. no song reveales more how much he lost it since ´99.

This is what Great Gazza's website says about the Bagley Warehouse show in 1995 :

SETLIST
Respectable
All Down The Line
Jumping Jack Flash
Honky Tonk Women
Start Me Up
Brown Sugar
Not Fade Away
Let It Bleed
Street Fighting Man
Before They Make Me Run
PLUS "some hot blues jams"

COMMENTS
"Again, this was a private performance, used as a video shoot for the ""Like A Rolling Stone"" promo,in front of approx. 100 people.
The Stones played some songs in between takes.
Some songs may have been played more than once or aborted when it was time to re-shoot
Track 9 preceded by a few bars on guitar by Keith of ""How I Wish"".
No tape extant"

==> No mention of You Got The Silver

Otherwise, absolute highlight in Lyon 2007 !

Sorry for my english ; I'm a french little boy (but I like it)

From memory, the source for that information was Bill German's "Beggars Banquet" magazine, published a few weeks later.

I don't think the actual song was criticised. I think it was Scorcese's choice of editing it and putting interviews into the middle of the song.

Connection was heavily critisized hear when the cd came out. I never understood why. Of course it wasn't the most perfect version but i always liked. Keith's singing sounded a lot like the sixties and Ronnie plays some great guitar!

You got the silver from '99 is my favorite over '07. I remember seeing some pro shot of that song but i can't remember where. I think it was from some socumtary shown on Dutch television.

Cheers,
Wuudy

Hey audun-eg, here you go, I'm gonna throw a wrinkle in this serious Rolling Stones thread:

You think Connection is brilliant from Shine A Light? Have you actually listened to it on the record? Keith sounds like he's being strangled. It should have been kept off the album - it's embarrassing to play with other people - Stones fans even - around.

I was fortunate enough to witness the first ever live performance of You Got The Silver...As I have recounted many times. My best ever Stones or Rock & Roll moment show. No Security Oakland'99...Front row. Me and my buddy who went to the show said to each other before the show, what song will they never do live?...We both said You Got The Silver. A a song we both adored. When Keith started up with this song we both went berserk. People around us were looking at us funny, while not recognizing the song..."I haven't done this one since I done it"...Classic Keith. My favorite Keith song.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

Well, I personally like the SAL Connection a lot, but I was surprised that my wife, who is not a Stones' fan thought it was one of the highlights - together with Champagne, YGTS and She Was Hot. Pretty good slection for a person who is not a fan, I think. She actually only went with me because she thought that it was a regular movie about the Stones. She was disappointed when I told her it was a concert (she gets a lot of that at home :-) ), but she was more than satisfied when we were leaving the cinema. Anyway, she liked the Connection so much that she asked me wheteher we had it somewhere on a DVD and so when we returned, I played the Winos' version from the Palladium, but she wasn't much impressed by that version. It is true that the intensity that Keith puts into his singing in SAL is very rare. And I like it.

I guess we should've been discussing AC/DC instead...

In all fairness, Keith's performance on Shine a Light should have kept off the album...I reckon the two Beacon concerts are the worst recorded performances by Keith Richards with the Stones.

Respectfully disagree. You Got the Silver may not be the best version Keith did on this tour, but I found it more emotionally resonant than most of the other songs in the movie. Certainly, I'd put it in my top 5 songs of the movie...

You´ve said it,Mathijs : "Perfomances by Keith Richards..."
He is performing in SAL,because he was told to do,or by own decision.

If it´s the second ,it´s clearly intended by him to act in the way it´s shown.
Cannot see what´s wrong with this,because it´s a movie...

By the way : Connection is of questionable quality,You Got The Silver
(including the perfomance) is great !
