Angie
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Jamaica,
November 25 - 30 & December 6 - 21, 1972 and
Island Recording Studios, London, UK, May 28 - June 20, 1973

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Mick Taylor - acoustic guitar
Nicky Hopkins - piano
Nicky Harrison - strings

Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here

With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, Angie, you can't say we never tried

Angie, you're beautiful, yeah, but ain't it time we said goodbye
Angie, I still love ya, remember all those nights we cried

All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear
Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here

Oh Angie, don't you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie, ain't it time we said goodbye, yeah

With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, I still love you baby, ev'rywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you, come on baby, dry your eyes

But Angie, Angie ain't it good to be alive
Angie, Angie, they can't say we never tried

Produced by Jimmy Miller

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Angie / Silver Train” 7” single
(Rolling Stones Records RS 19105) UK, August 17, 1973

A beautiful song with a very nice guitar intro. Unfortunately my sister played it all the time when it was released so I grew a bit tired of it. I remember that I didn´t like Charlie´s little hi-hat syncopes, but now I find them quite charming...

Oh Angie bring back some good memories, beeing 13 at that time, in love and all that. "Angie" beeing the perfect "slow dance" number at parties! "Let me whisper in your ear.." perfect for a young lad back then...
And another thing, back then I remember having difficulties trying to make my class mates getting into The Rolling Stones, with no luck...then "Angie" came on the radio and become a no.1 hit here in Norway, and suddenly "everybody" loved the Stones, and I was feeling pretty good !!

Nice acoustic lines at the beginning, but otherwise I can do without it. Some would argue that they jumped the shark with this one.

Jimmy Miller was a genius producer!

Fantastic track. One of the best ballads ever, if not THE best.

It's decent. The lyrics could be better.

Loved the song from the beginning. I was 14 when Exile was released and didn't own a single Stones album. But I bought Hot Rocks that year, More Hot Rocks was beneath the Christmas tree in 1972, and by the summer of 1973, my collection was nearly complete. The Angie single was the first new Stones product I brought. Played it and Silver Train to death, and loved the performance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (Silver Train, Dancing with Mr. D and Angie).

Always liked it, especially Mick's singing. Keith amd Mick T. are right on time. Nice piano too.

Three distinct instruments (guitar, piano, and strings) playing distinct solo parts simultaneously...beautiful...

Jimmy Miller was a genius producer!

I thought Keith said that this album wound up with him and Mick more or less producing it while the wasted Miller spent his time cutting swastizkas in the control board with a knife hence the terrible mixing job by the inexperienced Glimmer Twins that marred the album at the time. Keith said they had completely wore Miller out by this time- "He came in a lion and went out a sheep"! Anybody else read/hear this?

Great ballad. I was about 16 at the time. One of my all-time favorite Stone's song. Highlight hearing it live in 1975 TOTAs.

great studio track. loved the way they did live in '73....and also enjoyed the '75 live versions. not so much, since, though....

An undeniable classic.
I prefer Wild Horses, myself; much more heartbreaking.

The Stones Go Limp is what the thread should have been. Yeah it's a great song - because it's been played forever since 1973 of course it's a classic and their best ballad ever. Well it's not. It is genius but I think it sucks - there are much better songs and much better ballads.

Keith said that about Miller about - having read a few things - Goats Head Soup as well as It's Only Rock'N'Roll. From what I know Miller was gone before IORR started.

Angie & Beast of Burden: two Keith songs that surprised me as I'd originally thought they were Micks.

I guess Keith is to blame for is army of less-than-stellar ballads long before Sleep Tonight.

The live recordings from the 1973 Tour of Europe are also great. I love them because of their natural sound and ambiance.

The Brussels '73 version is just perfect. the '75 versions sound like a bull being castrated.

Brussels version is fantastic but I think the studio version remains the best.

I agree - no live version has bettered the studio version.
(and I was just kidding about Keith's Ballads)

I gotta admit I thought it was a "pussy" song as a 16 yr old know it all kid but I grew to really appreciate it! Maturity will do that to ya(plus it helped me get laid)

I have always liked Angie. I was -4 when it was released, so I have very few personal memories :-) But it is one of my favourite ballads. I have only heard it once live (2006 in Berlin) and it pleased me a lot. I don't know whether I prefer Angie or Wild Horses. Probably WH...but both songs are great.

Angie is a great song and the studio version is the best.

I don't quite like the song. It's kind of to the Stones what "Baby One More Time" is to Britney Spears: it's too annoyingly catchy. Yes, every record producer wants a song to stick in the ears of the listeners, but the ears want to have a good time as well. I have to admit that I usually skip it. It may be their most famous ballad, but it's not my favourite of their ballads. No, that's not "Streets of Love" either ;-)
