Okay, this band isn't a regular guest at this forum, but...I was at their gig yesterday and what a night it was! Those guys have really re-invented themselves and they are on fire. I just want to recomend this band to everyone who has a chance to catch them and still hesitates. See them on this tour! They play a lot from the new album and they play a lot from the early eightees, plus the hits of course. The show is very very fast, has a great atmospere and holds together very well. For me definitely the best concert of this year - much better than I expected. Anyone else has seen them recetly?

Always liked their stuff but I think Monster is still the last great album (yes...I have heard them all).

never seen them, but for a long time now I've barely been able to recognize their sound. They left behind the jangly sound and became somewhat generic to me, I'm afraid.

They are playing brilliant shows at the moment. Go see them if you can!

They've got their guitar sound back again and I love it!

Amen! My second favorite band ever, and it broke my heart when Bill quit. They've FINALLY managed to get their sea legs back - Accelerate is a great album and they were on fire at MSG a couple of months ago.

My fingers are crossed for another NYC show this fall...

Their Cardiff gig next week got moved out of the Millenium stadium due to low ticket sales, and into the CIA, capacity 7,000! Only sold 11,000 tickets apparently.

I saw then in Toronto in June with Modest Mouse (featuring Johnny Marr of the Smiths) and the National Opening up. Great triple bill, but REM blew everyone away. The best I have seen from them in over a decade. They played with a lot of energy and passion.....and unlike the Stones, weren't afraid to showcase the new record.

As for poor ticket sales in Cardiff.....there is no accounting for taste. People will miss out on an amazing concert, of new stuff and deep older songs.

If I were in the UK this Fall I would check out REM...and another great band, The Alarm, who are doing a weird tour of playing the same cities on successive weeks. Saw them in NYC last month and they were on fire.

I had tix for Radiohead last Friday night but gave them away. I knew they would be a downer after all the energy of the Alarm and REM shows this Summer. My next show is Black Crowes in a club in October.

what happens to the other 4,000?

It is rather weird that Europe still embraced R.E.M. during the Up/Reveal/Around The Sun era yet seems relatively underwhelmed by Accelerate, whereas the opposite has been true in the U.S.

Nevermind, you should be looking forward to a great great show. The stadium they played here wasn't sold out either (20.000 out of 30.000 tickects sold), but that didn't matter. It was an amazing show, I was in the third row, checked all the Buck's Rickenbackers closely. His guitarplaying was awsome and Stipe and Mills were brilliant!

REM Part 2: How they look ! I don't really know, should I cry or should I laugh.
Why must imitate this "great" guitarist nonstop the riffs from Keith ?

Dear Hungarian Wild Pig,

just to things...

1.) If people "imitate" certain playing styles of other players it is sometimes a way of showing respect (e.g. the opening riff of "It's only Rock & Roll").

2.) If you really think that Peter Buck is, quote, "nonstop" imitating Keith you must be out of your mind - or you know nothing about music.

Your intelligent comments are really worth reading and add a nice new perspective to this discussion...
(IRONY! Just to make sure you get it!).

I'm going to Twickenham in 2 weeks time to see REM for the first time . Sounds like it should be a good gig .
Anyone know what ticket sales are like ? I'm only used to seeing this stadium full for The Stones .

REM Part 3: This is a music for very a tender psyche. I dont have such a thing, I hate this very nice innocuous band.

I don't care if you like R.E.M. or not. You may even hate them. I'm not a big fan of them (nowadays), too.
But if you think Peter Buck is "nonstop" imitating Keith - you are absolutely on the wrong trail...

It shows that you don't understand anything about music, so why should we care what you think about any band or musician?
Why don't you just have a beer, then?

Wild Pig,

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

. . . by the way, can you really hate them if they're innocuous?

innocuous: adj. not likely to give offense or to arouse strong feelings or hostility

Okay, looking at Wild Pig's details - he's been a member of this forum for 4 years. He has posted 53 posts during those 4 years. And 5 of those just today! It looks like he has finally found a thread that suits him, where he can spread his heatread. Hopefully this therapy will help him...
But let's not get off the topic of this OT spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Agreed!

So you have a feeling that Buck plays like Keith?

Being deaf, one might get this impression, as they both play a lot of chords on a guitar.

But music is also about listening.

@The Stones:
You're right, don't feed the trolls. But I have a little spare time and sometimes it's fun replying to a troll like Hungarian Wild Pig imagining him wankin' off in front of his 'puter every time somebody posts a reply - til it hurts him really bad!

Happy24, actually you can't place any faith in that date of 2004-09-03 11:06, everyone who was one the site from before that date has that as the date and time they joined (check my name for example), but you're right on with your point:

Accelerate wasn't named by accident, this is about a band getting back to where they came from, and the tour lives up to the name as well.

cheers

Guys ! Thank you all very kindly !

1. One guy is from CIA and analyses all my activities in the last 4 years.
2. The other guy gives me English lessions about the real meaning of the word "innocuous".
3. The third guy imagines how I wankin off and shoot everything full and than makes psychic researchs regarding my f u c k i n soul.

I wish U all all the best and very nice REM concerts !!!!!!!!

Please don't get personal or start fights here. Some people like REM others do not, simple as that.

I have been to REM shows, thought they were ok. I bought their latest record and played it through several times but it did not mean sanything to me. Their previous records were better. I have a ticket for the REM show in Oslo early September and then I will know if they are still going strong. I suppose so.
