I was listening to a local radio station yesterday and for a contest prize, they were giving out a copy of the Shine A Light DVD and a cd the dj referred to as "Rolling Stones classic hits remastered". Well I didn't win the contest and had never heard of this particular collection before. So I E-Mailed the DJ and this was the response he gave me: ABKCO Records has issued a promotional CD featuring remastered versions of 21 Stones tracks, from It's All Over Now to Honky Tonk Women. The German-made CD, dubbed "Rolling Stones Remastered", uses the U.K. Out Of Our Heads/December's Children U.S. artwork on its cover.
I remember reading that the "Under My Thumb" from this disc is mixed differently (for the better) than the Under My Thumb that was eventually released. It could have been Ruby Tuesday but,I'm pretty sure that it was Under My Thumb.
Wasn't there a similar promo with fewer tracks? Also.....if I remember correctly, one of these promos was included with the purchase of a Sony SACD player....correct?
I believe there is a shorter version, with maybe 5 or 10 tracks on it? Here's some info on the 21x5 sampler from lukpac.org:
As many Stones fans won't recognize this entry in the list, a bit of explanation is in order. This package was created by ABKCO as a "sampler" offering from the then- upcoming reissue series. As it was issued far in advance of the actual release date of the reissues, it started going for amazingly ridiculous prices on eBay, despite the fact that ABKCO was seemingly throwing these at anybody who asked. Despite the fact that the reissues are now available, this continues to be traded at grossly inflated prices.
Unfortunately, *some* of the value may be justified, as this set contains a few versions of tracks that did not make it in this form to the final discs (while this isn't a big deal for CD listeners, who can simply acquire a copy of this disc, the improved SACD layer of a few tracks presents a bigger problem). The different tracks (that aren't merely shorter edits) are as follows:
1) "Under My Thumb." This track is processed on the officially released discs (with the hiss level of the track noticeably increasing when the vocals come in), but is unprocessed here. 2) "Miss Amanda Jones." Still has the folded-in intro, but NO hiss reduction has been applied to the track at this point. 3) "Jiving Sister Fanny." The version on Metamorphosis suffers from several digital glitches (as does the rest of the album). The version here is glitch-free.
Thus, the sampler reflects something of a "work-in-progress," as while most versions here are the versions that would be used on the final discs ("Ruby Tuesday" is the wrong mix, for example), they aren't necessarily in their final forms. An interesting listen, but don't pay eBay prices for the novelty!
That IS a fantastic compilation! A very interesting way of organising the songs. Not too many warhorses/Hot Rocks tracks but enough. And some unexpected tracks as well.
Which reminds me, I was looking at the tracks from the original issue of Rolled Gold and then looking at Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks and realised it's basically those two combined. But there are some different mixes on the reissue. I wonder why they've never just bothered with issuing a comp that says THESE mixes or THOSE mixes, etc...
i mentioned this earlier.....one of these promos was included free with Sony SACD players...possibly a BEST BUY exclusive. anybody with anymore details? I'm guessing it was the 6 trk (SACD only) one. ??
