"Too Rude" (Lydon Roberts)
"Too Rude" (Lydon Roberts/Sly Dunbar/Robbie Shakespeare)

(all I've got, one is a credit from Dirty Work, another is from Keiths 1988 show)

edit: probably it was a reggae tune by Sly & Robbie.

Too Rude is actually a cover of Winsome from 1983
by reggae artist Half Pint (Lindon Roberts) ...Well Worth a listen

A Keith interview from around the time of the
Dirty Work recordings had him saying that in the car
he travelled to and from the studio in was a tape which
contained Winsome....Eventually it hooked him and ended up on Dirty Work

HALF PINT..........

Terry will probably be able to confirm for sure, but I believe Sly and Robbie earned a writing credit on the live version of "Too Rude" from LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM because the Winos live arrangement was extended to incorporate the melody line from Sly and Robbie's "Hello, Africa" (which itself was an adaptation of the traditional African folk song,"Skokiaan"). The New Barbarians ran through "Hello, Africa" on the Culver City rehearsal tape from 1979 for anyone wishing to compare.

>> Sly and Robbie's "Hello, Africa" (which itself was an adaptation of the traditional African folk song,"Skokiaan" ) <<

eek - i have been searching far and wide for where that number came from!
i recognized the Skokiaan connection, but can you tell me where to find Sly & Robbie's rendition?
thank you thank you

No,unfortunately I can't. I'm playing detective in this instance. Since the melodies of the songs are the same, I'm presuming Sly and Robbie were credited as the songwriters of "Hello, Africa." Again, I defer to Terry's amazing musical knowledge in this instance.

>> Since the melodies of the songs are the same ... <<

do you mean the melodies of Skokiaan and the Barbarians' Africa, or ... ?
sorry to be obtuse - i'm not sure i get how the good Sly and Robbie entered the picture.
i really have been searching all over for where the Barbarians found the number.
i even ... well, never mind! but it would be brilliant to know, finally.

Sorry, I'm the one not being clear. I meant the second half of the extended live arrangement of "Too Rude" by the Winos incorporates the melody line from "Hello, Africa" as heard on The New Barbarians' Culver City rehearsal tape. I'm conjecturing that Sly and Robbie are the credited songwriters on "Hello, Africa" (I've never heard the original) as it would explain their songwriting credit on the PALLADIUM CD. "Hello, Africa" is definitely an adaptation of the African folk tune, "Skokiaan." The latter song, like numerous folk numbers, has many alternate titles and lyrics and a number of credited songwriters for the different interpretations.

thanks for clarifying - i will keep searching, in that case!

>> "Hello, Africa" is definitely an adaptation of the African folk tune, "Skokiaan." <<

right - i did recognize that connection, but would still love to know whose version the Barbarians based theirs on.

Hi Rocky....Long time no speak...

Remember reading Sly-Robbie/Too Rude credits on Palladium CD...But took it
to be a credit/nod to them because they played on Half Pint's Winsome and were prossibly heavily involved in the arrangement etc of the tune....

Have never had any luck tracking-down any reggae tune titled Hello Africa...

Hey, Rockman, it has been far too long. "Hello, Africa" might be a bootleg only title (do you have the Barbarians Culver City rehearsal tape?) or it could be an improvisation around the African folk tune discussed above. I know there are several other covers of "Too Rude" (didn't UB40 tackle it as well?), are the songwriting credits consistent?

<<been searching all over for where the Barbarians found the number>>

I believe it's Eddy Grant's version off his debute album 'Message Man' from '77 they covered at Culver City.

So...that version of Too Rude on here by Half Pint - is THAT the version Keith learned?

I guess the Winsome - what is that? His band?

"Winsome" is the title of the original Half Pint song.
[allmusic.com]

... kind of a strange move, to "cover" a guy's song, but change the title! Creating this mystery probably didn't gain HP any new fans.

So the song was originally called "Winsome" but it's also known as "Too Rude"?

Kind of like Sticks is also called The Sticks and Satisfaction is (....) Satis...

Although those are still the titles. Not completely different exactly.
