Date: August 4, 2008 20:28

So what's the best saxophone-performance on a stonesrecord?

Sonny Rollins – Waiting on a Friend
Bobby Keys - Brown Sugar
Mel Collins - Miss You
Bobby Keys - Live with Me
David McMurray - Suck on the Jugular
Joe Sublett - Flip the switch

Brown Sugar is Brown Sugar, no getting around that bit of perfection

. . . but otherwise, Bobby on CYHMK and Sonny on Slave.

sonny is another class of player altogether; no disrespect to bobby, whose work on BS and CYHMK, among others, is magnificent. but, sonny's contributions to tattoo you are works of art.....

Trevor Lawrence or Steve Madaio playing on Brussels '72 YCAGWYW and this is best Stones sax ever!
Forget studio recordings, this was performance for eternity...

Don't forget Joshua with his fantastic piece of music on Waiting On A Friend from No Security.

I love Sonny Rollins on Tattoo You... (Slave and Waiting).
But hey, they are jazz musicians. They should do that again on a future studio album, a great sax part.

I know this isnt the general consensus but I have to give the nod to Bobby for "Live With Me" even though 'Brown Sugar" is a close second.

absolutely. i was gonna mention redman's sax job on the st. louis show. sublime. totally elevated a song that has often disappointed in concert on recent tours. also - let's not forget wayne shorter's amazing add-on to How Can I Stop.

Well, back in my college days (when we played records...before the era of CD), I was a DJ at the college station. I had the Friday, technically Saturday morning 2AM-6Am slot.

One night I played only Rolling Stones. I invited to the studio, a very attractive girl.On the desk was a copy Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, well one thing led to another, and before you know it... she hopped on top of me, it was quite a sex performance on the Stones record. The record broke, but who really cares after something like that happens?

If I had to go for just ONE, it would be Bobby Keys on CYHMK.

Overlook Bobby Keys playing on Emotional Rescue at your own risk...he could have charmed a snake with that one...

anything by Sonny Rollins - especially "Slave"

Bobby's excellent, but as a musician Rollins is a different class.

Stupid question!
The ultimate rock'n'roll sax performance is of course Brown Sugar.

Casino Boogie. Basically just two notes for a full eight measures. And it rocks anyway.

good choice! always loved it. it's quite an untypical saxsolo, since normaly saxplayers often play long melody-lines. this sounds more like a rock n roll guitarsolo to me!
but slave is fantastic too...so is BS.

ive always really liked the solo on the Miss You studio version. Its perfect. It has this exciting "saturday night" feel and sound.

Brown Sugar...Not as sexytongue sticking out smiley as some other choices. But when I saw Bobby play it with a Stones tribute band in Vegas a few years ago,it was even better than the record.

The 45 version of "Miss You"--which was released before the Some Girls album didn't have the sax solo.

I played the heck out of that version while waiting for the LP to come out.

So the sax solo came as something as a surprise. Over the years I've gotten used to it, but I remember that my initial take was that it was an unnecessary overdub and that the song worked out well without it.

When you say "saturday night" do you mean "SNL?" Because I can hear that in there loud and clear.

yeah, it does remind me of the theme song from SNL (back when that show used to be good). When I hear that song It just has a satrurday night , party feel to it and The solo on Miss You gives that song that feeling also.
