Charlotte '99

Good God Almighty what a show. I have the Pete's Paparrazzi dvd of it, thanks to an IORR source.
I was there and so I am really partial. Has anyone else seen the dvd of this show?
I write this as an appreciation for:
the Stones of course, they come to Charlotte a city where nobody gave 2 shits about them when they first played here in '65, and proceed to do some of the most talked-about shows in their history, in '72; and i would say, '99..

the song selection:
JJF
Bitch
U Got Me Rockin
Respectable
HTW
Memory Motel

thats just the first five..

they went on to play all the great selections from the '99 tour, including a beautiful ' You Got The Silver'
and I clearly remember a very powerful ' Midnight Rambler'

Thnks to whomever filmed this in the audience, and to the IORR'r that sent it to me
I mourn the loss of my good friend this past Thursday, a good guitarist, good blues player, a man of substance.

thanks

I may be partial also because the NS tour was my first tour ever...but these were some might special shows. Everything about it was just great....simple stage....very rich set lists and they played great. The last tour to me, where Keith played fantastically. Just great every show. Actually playing rhythm guitar...hardly any noodling. Great sound. Shame there was hardly a DVD release here.

you're right on
especially about Keith.

No f**king around, playing that slide on 'You Got The Silver'

any listening or viewing of this show will confirm it as one of the greats

I didn't realize it at the time, but in hindsight it's clear (to me, anyway)

As much as I love the '72 Stones, 1999 had a lot of the same strength, and one can trace a lot of it to Keith.

Those were the best moments. Almost every boot I've seen or heard from these shows when Keith announces "You Got The Silver" you hear the whole place cheer...and then sing a long. Great moment. When Charlie comes in, and Keith is doing that slide....beautiful. Ronnie did a great job playing lead this past tour but these NS versions were more jamming.

Geez...look at Keith play that.

Duke,

A big favor to ask of you, please - does your video show Keith shaking hands with someone from the runway on the way back to the main stage from the B-stage or does someone get in the way of the camera view for a little while? It was me he shook hands with and I would love to get a film of it!

Thanks...

Re: Charlotte '99

I saw only 2 NS shows in '99. Charlotte '99 was good- great You Got the Silver and yes Rambler was powerful indeed. But in my opinion MCI (D.C.) 2nd show was much hotter-Band seemed to have much more energy. And yes,I was pissed that I didn't catch the the NS 99 Philly show where the boys busted out GOMC. Ah memories......

Yeah, great show! "Some Girls" and especially, "memory Motel" were excellent. A b-stage setlist of "Route 66", "Imagination" and "Rambler" WOW! Best "Rambler" I've ever seen.

I saw the two Boston NS shows, on consecutive nights (this tour must be the last time they played consecutive nights). I agree that this was one of the best tours ever - in fact, I am thinking that it may well be the very best! Great set list, great stage set (in the round - on the first night I sat directly behind Charlie and could here the band talking to each other on-stage - and heard Charlie tear shreds off one of the sound guys because his monitor wasn't working). Loved it - hope the next tour is something similar!!

When they did the arena show in Charlotte 1999 this was just 1 1/2 years after the stadium show in the same city. I went to both shows and I was impressed by the fact that they filled up the stadium in Charlotte with 54,000 people, then came back so soon and sold out the arena. See IORR reports:

Ericsson Stadium, Charlotte, NC, Friday, Oct. 10, 1997

Great show indeed. In fact, it was the last time they would play there since the venue was being replaced by the new Time Warner Arena.

Midnight Rambler on the B stage was awesome.

It was sing along with the Stones all night.

First time I ever heard You Got The Silver live. Keith was fantastic.

Some Girls was great, I was sitting on Ronnie's side 4 rows off the floor. As I recall a woman in front of us held up a sign that said "Mick, marry me". This was just after Luciana Mored announced she was pregnant with Mick's child. Mick glanced at the sign and seemed to shake his head No. A truly great moment.

BV and to date there hasn't been another concert held at Ericson (now Bank of America) Stadium since the Stoned played B2B there.

I like how BV said about the 1997 stadium show: "In 9 songs we have got 3 from the new album - that's how it should be!"

Great vid of Keith. That's beautiful.

They debuted Flip The Switch on that Friday evening at Ericson Stadium.

It was a humid evening and Mick mentioned how they "froze their balls off" at the previous show in Boston.

It was replaced by the Bobcat Arena in Charlotte, which was opened in 2005 with a Rolling Stones concert.

after looking close, I see Keith shaking hands with someone, right after the end of MR...he's diagonally behind Charlie, and hasn't yet put the guitar down..not on the runway, but at the corner of B-stage and Runway..
then someone does get in the way and the camera pulls way back, so I can't see them walk back to the main stage.
Thats it, but I wanted to respond to you...
was that you?

Yes, it was named Bobcat Arena when they played there in 2005. It has since been renamed Time Warner Arena [www.timewarnercablearena.com]

Thank you very much for checking, Duke, but it was during that short time when they guy got in the way of the camera. I was hoping you had a different video than the one I have but I guess not!

It was a great show, though, wasn't it?!

yeah I'm more amazed at the high level of each song every time I watch it..
especially the newer ones, 'Saint Of Me', 'Out Of Control', ...

you were at several No Security shows, I'm guessing.

I still think that tour ranks with the best ('72)

always loved (and appreciated) the sing along to the "Saint of Me" at the end...them playing a little for the audience to sing to. Was always cool to hear a big room like that sing.

I think this tour made them realize how damn well they can still play Rambler. Ever since this tour, it was a valid option as part of the set. Every version was magical. Moonlight Mile always was a treat.

Funny, as a young fan at the time, I remember calling the DVD company that owned a lot of the footage from the opening Oakland show. There were clips on the old official site: www.therollingstones.com I called up the company and asked if there was going to be a DVD release from the tour. The woman said No because "it's basically the same songs from the last tour and/or release."

Well, that was sorta true...

No problem Lukester it's not easy keeping up with venues getting corporate names these days.

As you know the Stones love to christen new venues (i.e. the former Ericson Stadium and Bobcats Arena)...I for one am hoping they christen the new Yankee Stadium or Citi Field (the new Shea Stadium), both slated to open in 2009. It would be in keeping with their tradition if they did so. And since it's New York selling tickets wouldn't be an issue.

Ah Sam Spade, and Lukester,
at the (then named) Bobcats Arena Show, do you remember Keith coming out to sing his 2 songs, saying 'hey, you didn't have to build us a new one...!'

I enjoyed the show, especially seeing and hearing Charlie, as I thought the drums were miked very well, and he had his orange t shirt on

but overall the show never really took off, had a kind of going through the motions feel to it, just my remembering of it...
except for 'Rough Justice' and 'Night Time is the Right Time'...

I've always wondered why 'Gimme Shelter' was never played. they avoided it.

Charlotte 99, one of the first and few arena's to sell serious mixed drinks at the show. A great party crowd starting across the street at Jocks & Jills around noon.
Stones blew the doors off the place that night.

I think I saw 5 No Security shows, 4 of them strong and one (the 1st Chicago show) was weak. The crowd at the Charlotte show was the best of the bunch!

Duke, yes, I remember it vividly also remember Jagger saying "we're gonna bust the cherry on this place".

As for the show itself, I thought one of the highlights was Mick's rendition of Ruby Tuesday that evening. It was one of his best.

I remembr Mick pulling his t-shirt over his head and runnng amok during the ending to "Out Of Control".
