While half of the Stones concerts took place up to and including 1967, there was a lot of variety from one leg of each tour to the next with big hits dropping out of the setlists within a few months of them being in the charts, so thats probably why not too many Brian-era songs would be in the top 10

Could it be something like 'Carol' or 'Around & Around' then?

And 'Not Fade Away' was still in the set during late '66 (& of course revived 1994-95).

IT IS FOR SURE:

1 Jumping Jack Flash , never left out since 1969!!
2 Honky Tonk Women , also since 1969
3 Brown Sugar , always played since some days in 1970 and always since 1971
4 Tumbling Dice , always since 1972
5 Start Me Uo , always since 1981
6 Miss You , almost always since 1978
7 You Got Me Rocking , almost always since 1994
9 SFTD , so much shows since 1989 + 1975 , 1970 , 1969

There's NO WAY 'You Got Me Rocking' has been performed more than 'Satisfaction' (almost always 1965-1972, & then almost always 1981-2007).

Re: What is the most played song ever by the Stones?

Guys - I recommend reading the first page of this thread so that people don't have to repeat the facts.

Tumbling Dice was dropped in 1976 for at least 10% of the shows.Miss You was skipped for 1999 completely and it was played rarely on the '02/'03 tour (18 or so times out of 120 or so chances).Honkey Tonk Women was played only rarely in 1972.Satisfaction was rare in 1972 and it wasn't played at all in '75 or '76,it was rare in '78 and it was not always played at the very beginning of the '81 tour either. That's how JJF,BS,TD and HTW caught up to it

Re: What is the most played song ever by the Stones?
Date: July 31, 2008 21:33

Satisfaction was not played on the No Security tour either. Not once.JJF,BS,TD,and HTW were although TD was skipped once or twice at the start.

Re: What is the most played song ever by the Stones?

Maybe. That was brought up on the first page as well.It could be close.Remember these modern tours have many more shows than the 1973 tour or 1969 tour did put together.SFM was skipped in 1982,1997,1999,2005.2006,& 2007 completely. It was only played at two shows in 1998.YGMR made up alot of ground on it those years (except 1982 obviously).

YGMR can't have been played more often than Sympathy !
They palyed STFD through the whole Steel Wheels/Urban Tour + 69, 70, 75 and a few 76. Plus if YGMR have been in rotation during BTB and ABB, Sympathy have been NOT ! And what is your number 8? And what about IORR (played 75/76, 89/90, 94/95, 99 (+ some 97/98), 02/03, 05/06/7)?

Sorry for my english ; I'm a french little boy (but I like it)

Its not "for sure". I've done the bloody research. HTW was barely played in 1972-73

YGMR was only debuted in 1994 and while its played frequently its not close to being a constant fixture

Gimme Shelter was only played at a couple of 1969 shows, and wasnt played at all between 1976 and 1989. There have been several tours since (including Licks) where it hasnt been played at all.

Gimme Shelter was actually played quite a few times on the Licks Tour. The last full tour when it wasn't played at all was the '81/'82 tour unless you count legs of tours > 1994,2005,2007.

My bad. Meant to say "hardly" been played at all. Like I mentioned previously, it had been left off entire tours for over a decade prior to 1989. Thanks for the clarification

im quite sure its satisfaction, it has a head start on brown sugar, jj flash, tumbling dice, its only rock and roll etc.

"Satisfaction" was debuted in Aug/September 1965. It pre-dated JJF and HTW by about 130 shows and just over 150 ahead of Brown Sugar. By the end of 1969 it would have therefore been played in concert around 150-155 times.

However, in the 1970's , the Stones performed approximately 248 concerts. JJF and BS were performed in pretty much 100% of them, with HTW being played at close to 200 of them.

'Satisfaction' was performed something like 26 times in that decade - 15 of them in 1971, 6 in 1972 (as part of a medley), once in 1976 (Knebworth) and four times in 1978

So, by the end of the 1970's, JJF, BS and HTW would have passed it. Tumbling Dice was played approximately 210 times in the 70's after being debuted in 1972 and would have also passed 'Satisfaction' by 1976 or so.

JJF, BS and TD have been performed at 98-99% of Stones shows from 1981 onwards. As has the newly debuted Start Me Up. The Stones have played something like 735 shows in that time. 'Satisfaction' was dropped for the entire No Security tour (34 shows) and there have been other tours where it wasnt played quite as much as the top four and SMU.

IORR wouldnt be close. It was only debuted in 1975 and as it was left off the tours in 1978, 81 and 82 it would only have been played around 90 times prior to 1989. It also hasnt been a 'constant' since then.

You're right, IORR isn't close to numbers like JJF or HTW but: it was very very "constant" since 1989. I guess there were not more than 5 or 10 shows at each tour where they didn't play it.

its amazing that tumbling dice could surpass satisfaction as early as 1976.

as tumbling dice was only 4 years old and competing with what most people considered to be the ultimate stones song.

wonder why they ignored satisfaction so much in the 1970,s.

Probably because they were comfortable with their newer material, felt that their fans had matured along with them and didnt need to rely on songs from the start of their career to pad out a setlist.

You'd be surprised. 1997-98 for example...only played 57 out of 107 times. YGMR was played a few times more.

Those songs were certainly played in diferent years, but were in and out of the standard setlists that they used for each tour. There were none from 1963-64 that were constants up to 1966-67 or so.

I think mick likes ygmr in the set because its a later day song, he likes to rank it up there with the others

I applaud the concept of playing a latter day song to get more fans to appreciate their later work - its just that its not a particularly good one, even though it is somewhat stadium friendly.

Out of Control and Saint of Me got a better reaction from the audiences on the BTB/NS tours that any 'new' song had done since Start Me Up. OOC especially was an absolute showstopper night after night. Too bad that they didnt persist with them on subsequent tours.

Ha ha ha ha

I like this one.

Just to state an opinion about IORR - it's obviously not a constant like the others - but is sure is played like one - it always sounds like shit. I don't think anyone would notice if they never played it again.

Personally I'd like 'Love Is Strong' to become the "new" regular song, but I think Mick finds this a bit difficult to sing. Either that or 'Mixed Emotions'.

i agree about "its only rock and roll".

it isnt a great song, and has never been played well live in my opinion, so why stick with it.

would be better to play "if you cant rock me" or "crazy mama" instead.

He's stated that he finds Mixed Emotions difficult to pull off live as well. Which would probably explain why its never been played since the end of the 1990 tour.

Agree with you that Love is strong would be nice to hear more often. It was a nice surprise to get that one at one of the MSG shows a couple of years back.

IORR is a great singalong song - so in that context it works better in front of a big crowd than the other two (good though they were in 2002-2003 and 1997 respectively)

I actually thought IORR was one of the few songs they played better on the ABB tour than they had done on previous tours.

Still has never touched the studio version though, which is one of those wonderful musical accidents that they excel at - especially in the last couple of minutes of it where the beat isnt quite right, yet they manage to hold it together with wonderful results.

Where do Let's Spend the Night Together and Paint It Black rank in all this?

Re: What is the most played song ever by the Stones?
Posted by: Gazza ()
Date: August 1, 2008 22:51

Well down.

Paint it Black wasnt played at all between 1967 and 1989. After 1990, I dont think it was played again until July 1998, was only played on the 2003 leg of the Licks shows and then was pretty regular on ABB

LSTNT wasnt played between 1967 and 1981, apart from a couple of shows in 1976-77. It wasnt played again until 1997-98 and then not again until 2006

This hasnt been updated for a while, and a few corrections ,may be due, but you can see here what songs were played by the Stones in each year throughout their career

70's - [rocksoff.org]
80's - [rocksoff.org]

Great stuff, & I look forward to an update! : )

One point: shouldn't 1968 also include those songs from Rock & Roll Circus that weren't filmed ('Route 66', 'Confessin' The Blues', etc)? As these were performed in front of an audience I think they count as more than just rehearsals / jams.
