Love King Crimson! All eras...awsome in the 70's, the rebirth in the 80's, the Double Trio of the 90's. They are coming back this August to NY, CHI & Philly. Tony Levin is back, wish Bruford was too. Of course they were on the bill at the Stones Hyde Park show.

I love the first 1969 King Crimson line-up, the later line-ups were great too, but for me the 69 band always jostles with the 68 era stones for 1st position as my favourite band!

I was very happy to be able to interview original member Ian McDonald on the phone back in 2001, and then he invited me to the In the Court of King Crimson book launch. Tis a great thing when you meet one of your musical heroes and they turn out to be nice and cool!

Ian and Michael Giles album, McDonald & Giles is also a big favourite of mine!

My memories dont stretch that far, I just owned a cassette day one day
(like it was in the swingin'80s, cassettes or LPs, left after any party)..
My & my pal brought that one plus I believe a cassette with a band called America or it could have been Bread.

While the enchanting raw fog danced silently on this Finn Forest high
level lake,we just stood there fishin' & fishin' & not a fish
but man, what a great moment when In The Court Of The Crimson King
popped up.Since it has been my anthem while I left my son to be
without him for some two-three weeks & created new sad lyrics to it in my own tounge.

In military service I found myself beside a goth-type musician who
used to play with Swedish semi-famous & legend Freddie Wadling
& he has Robert Fripp as his house God.

I saw Fripp & Co. a couple of years ago. Still very good.
Go & see them if you can.

I'm a big fan. Saw them (I should say Robert Fripp and his interchangeable crew) a few years ago in NYC.

Still a great band even with all the changes they've been through!

and can you be coaxed into adding captions so we know who we're looking at?
(i dug the early King Crimson a lot - up through about Starless and Bible Black -
but not PRing the bandmembers' faces all over the place was a mark of seriousness at the time.
i have a half-baked theory about that development, and about groups that weathered both esthetic styles well ...
but i'd better leave that for another thread, and/or for when it's more than half-baked.)

Yes, great guitars, Fripp still owns that 1959 les paul custom! Captions added and the photographer too.

King Crimson is one of my absolute fave groups thruough the years. Many member- and style changes but still good. Personally I like the Bruford/Wetton-line best. Lark's Tongue, Starless, Red and USA are all superb.

Does anyone know if there exists any video containing a live version of Asbury Park?

I only have the record Baboon mentiomed and this one must say I didn't played them fot years ...still great though

I always dug the first King Crimson LP, some great music.

They sort of get listed as a group similiar to King Crimson,

If you like Crimson check out the new Asia, with all the talk of "dated" music lately, listen without prejudice it's actually pretty good!

Another purdy similar band is Hungarian SOLARIS;
often to be seen in LA live.

...As well as Omega, here with A Büvesz (The Magician), a terrific vintage video
probably from 1975 in Germany, where they mainly worked in their heydays

What a great voice had Greg Lake.

Wetton's voice was also really splendid.

I really like the first album and "Lark's Tongue in Aspic".
But the real winner for me is "Red" - simply devastating!!

Crimson was rehersing this year in Adrian Belew's house and they're going to play some nights in US this year. Tony Levin is back to the band and Gavin Harrison from Porcupine tree is now the second drummer. What amazed me all the time is that Fripp always looks for new musical direction. I love all Crimson LP's but their achivments from 80's are in my opinion invaluable. Fripp has made 2 nice records with Andy Summers from Police. I love the way they used to Roland GR Synth. It's completely diffrent music than Stones, very complicated musical structures. I think between Belew and Fripp there's a true ancient form of waving or whatever Keith's call it

You're so right about Wetton, went to see Asia in London a couple of years ago an he is fantastic. They played "The Court of the Crimson King" what agreat moment.

Larks is their 5th studio album Greenblues.

Regarding Greg's sulky look...

Greg had decided to leave KC early 1970, citing that it just didn't seem right to continue with that name without Ian and Mike onboard and he also wanted to pursue Keith Emersons offer to start a new band... Fripp considered this too, but Emerson didn't want a guitarist.

Greg was asked if he'd come back and sing by Fripp to help complete the Poseidon album. Fripp & Sinfield failed to find a suitable vocalist in time for the sessions, hence the need for Greg. He agreed to do the sessions and his payment for his singing was KC's live pa system.

Gregory did some wonderful parts with ELP. Just listen to the Sage at Pictures at an Exhibition.

I really liked Carl's drumming, too.
But Keith's synthiziser-sound sounds hopelessly dated.
