It's amazing, nothing new about it, but how different our taste in music can be. Bette Midlers version of Beast of Burden is in my opinion great stuff !! Maybe I'm pussing it a little bit to far, but I think her version is even better than Stones' version !

Glad there's at least one person on here that sees something in it. Personally, I love it, I think vocally she does a cracking job. Ever seen the movie "The Rose", supposedly loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin with Bette Middler playing the role ? Can't remember the name of the opening number, what a belter though ?

As for those on here that slam the video ... dear o dear. Major sense of humour failure all round. It's very tongue in cheek, why not take it so ? O well, each to theirs.

Agree. Love it. And the video is a hoot. Some people seem to find it hard to accept the Stones sending themselves up. Great fun.

this video got a lot cable-play in the 80s... I never minded it. mick's acting is just careless enough... any less bad and he'd lose a bit of dignity.

but she does a helluva job. The Rose is a fantastic movie
and Bette Midler is a wonderful ACTOR.

I just cant stand her dressing nor her style or grin in this movie.
She gives me nightmares.
Omn the other hand almost ALL videos from 1984 was horrible.
She looks like a stupid girl I had the bad luck to be connected
with in a indirect way in 1984-85: thats not her fault, but...

I think the opening song from 'The Rose' concert sequences is 'Whose Side are You On?'. Also great on that album is 'Love Me With a Feeling'. Some of the early LP's (some with Barry Manilow involvement!) have really good tracks too such as her version of 'Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home', but 'Stay With Me Baby' and most of side two from the Divine Madness s/track live LP ('E St Shuffle'/'Summer The First Time'/'Leader of The Pack'/'YCAWGWYW'/ 'I Shall be released') really nail it!

I think we need to keep Mick's perspective in mind here. I think it was about Linda Ronstadt's Tumbling Dice that he said As long as it sells, I'll buy her dinner.

Something like that. I think Mick totally gets a laugh out of it. Or he did.

Personally I find Bette's version to be quite bland and too 1980s - she tried to give it a Joan Jett music wise - the problem is Bette can't rock out. So it remains hilarious.

The video is funny. You've got to be able to laugh at that.

As for the Bette Midler Video: it's not that Mick lost his whole dignity THERE, he lost nearly all of it in the "REWIND" - Compilation the following year. I even feel sorry for poor Wyman who in comparison acts real cool in this piece of crap (i mean the interludes of course).

But what really nailed it (but, as said, at this point Mick had no dignity left to loose) was the crap-turned-celluloid- Julian Temple Videoslaughter which was "Running out of luck".

Should write a word or two about it in the thread about this ... rental movie.
