Hey Mathijs, Nice to see you around it's been awhile? Anyway did you guy's ever come to a conclusion on Keith's speakers in his Twin's? I'm am 90% sure that they are super lead 80's,celestions. I really doubt they are 30's. I know that sound those 80's are bitchen! Or the Classic to be precise. I don't know what happened to that thread Anorak, i know it's around but it's pretty funny somebody erased all my post that were right on the mark before anybody had the info. Some people man,like to take all the credit for something so trivial,lol... I guess some people have way to much time on there hands.

I think we pretty much came to that conclusion, yes.
We also concluded I think that the closest current equivalent would be the G12 "Classic Lead". The other speaker in the current line up which shares the same lineage is the G12K 100 ,derived from the G12H-100 which was around in the 80s.

Thanx Spud, I pretty much knew that's what they were, it was interesting though trying to figure that stuff out. My only complaint is i saw that thread a few month's back and saw a bunch of my post erased that had all the info privy to everything basically ,and other people took credit for it, very interesting,lol... like i said some people have way to muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch time on there hands.

Coincidentally, I just bought one of these amps - the lacquered tweed version with the Jensen speaker. Not because of the first post in this thread by the way. I have read that Clapton actually uses one on stage for slide guitar. Don't know the truth about this though.

The band I'm in has got 3 pro juniors, a simple version of the blues junior. All 3 sound different by the way. The BJ 's got more knobs (for bass control if I remember well). The PJ's got only one control for tone, but that's fine. Great sound for recording and small gigs.

I have a 73 Super Reverb....it kicks...the 10 inch speakers break up so nicely...dirty sound at low volume...if neccessary

Well, first of I personaly think that a good sounding valve/tube amp can not be sold under $400. A bunch of decent caps, filters, speaker, wood, transformers, man hour, profit for the manufacturer and profit for the seller: this costs more than $400. These amps you must upgrade for them to sound more than mediocre. A good speaker for $150, caps upgrade for $50, better tubes for $50, preferably a well made power transformer for $150. So, in my opinion, if you want a good sounding valve amp you need to spend at least $800.

For $800 I prefer vintage amps over most new amps, as vintage amps were just build so much better than modern amps. For $800 you can buy many '70's Fender amps like Princeton, Deluxe Reverb, Pro Reverb, Super Reverb and Twins, many Ampeg combo's like Reverberocket, Jet's and V-series, some really good Marshall's like the MK II's and early JCM 800 (the last good Marshall that is), and all have point to point wiring, American or British transformers and caps and excellent Jensen, Celestion, JBL or Altec speakers. Modern amps all have PCB boards, cheap speakers and sound very grainy in my opinion -like the Chinese VOX'es, Fenders and Marshall's.

If you want to buy a good, modern amp, you simply need to shell out more. Victoria makes the best Tweed amps ever, Fender has some really good amps, as do all boutique builders like Dr. Z., Fuchs, Matchless, Top Hat etc. Yes, new they are expensive, but most of these amps can be bought second hand for $1300 to $1500.

My secret tip: Boogie Mk I and IIB amp are one of the best made and sounding amps, and most versions (all except the very collectable wicker/cane versions with EQ and reverb, and an Altec speaker adds $400) can still be had for silly money -$1000 for an American hand build boutique amp.

Thanks for your reply. It's obvious to me that you know a lot about amps, so I appreciate you taking the time to give us your opinion.

Although I have a valve amp (Fender Super 60), I tend to use a Line 6 Spider 3 onstage, not because it has authentic valve tone (it doesn't) but it takes the knocks better than a valve amp and gives me easy access to very useable rhythmn guitar tones. I don't have to service it either, which is a bonus.

Each to his own I guess.

I supplement the tone where required with a Blackstar HT Drive valve pedal.

I actually forgot to mention what you CAN buy for $400: I am always amazed by the sound of the Vox Pathfinder tranny amps. The sound of those 15 watt amps is just encredible. Due to the cheap tranny layout normally the speaker is quite good. Add a good overdrive pedal like indeed the Blackstar HT drive or a Fulltone Fuldrive II you almost don't need a valve amp anymore.

That is a really nice tube pedal indeed, and it's designed like an amp instead of like a pedal. Higher voltage I think. Anyway, I got mine for £89 and it's worth a lot more IMHO.

Thanks Mathijs for sharing your deep knowledge about guitars with us. So, Vox Pathfinder + overdrive pedal, great. But then again, "tranny amp"...what does it mean?. Just looked for "tranny" on the web and it didn't match with this subject, i guess...

the subject was transistor-amps versus tube-amps.

the short term "tranny" is also used instead of power-or output-transformators (in any amp)
