New tour, which opener ?
Posted by: olorin ()

Since 1969, the Stones have not used a lot of opener:
JJF (1969-1970-1971-1999)
BS (1972-1973)
HTW (1975-1976)
Let it Rock (1978)
Under my thumb (1981-1982)
SMU (1989-1990)
Not fade away (1994-1995)
Satisfaction (1997-1998)

Since Licks Tour, the opener changes inside but it is everytime the same ones that come back :
SFM, BS, JJF, SMU, YGMR (only 3 times) and once Rambler during Licks Tour
SMU, JJF and one BS on early ABB tour. Then they tried to make something new with PIB (3 times), IORR (once), and YGMR (twice).

If they do a new tour, what song could make a good NEW opener.
I thought about GS, SFTD and If you Can't Rock Me.
Other ideas??

Sorry for my english ; I'm a french little boy (but I like it)

I think they should start with Jumping Jack Flash or Brown Sugar

JJF.

JJF/Brown Sugar are perfect encores, and Satisfaction - I hope they will never play it again tongue sticking out smiley

SftD with longer drum intro would be perfect.

If it HAS to be a warhorse - Paint It Black

Personally I'd prefer something unexpected like a Chuck berry song , a la Let It rock (1978) or Little Queenie (Double Door 1997)

I think they should go back to Satisfaction. It's great as an opener...they also tend to play the openers a little shorter. A quick in and out and then on to the next song. Lately, I've not enjoyed the 6 minute long Satisfactions we've been getting on the last 2 tours. It doesn't have to be that long.

How bout "The last time"? Sure it would be cliche, but is It any more so than Starting with Start me up?

anyways, I think they should pick something they haven't used before and then stick with it throughout the tour.

I think they've run out of new ideas for openers. Street Fighting Man was prolly the last of possible solutions. YGMR was a good idea but not really a well known song to welcome the audience to. If they are feeling adventurous I wouldn't mind "If You Can't Rock Me" as an opener.

" Everybody Need Somebody To Love "
would be the right song to open a show
and " We Love You " the last.

For arenas/stadiums, Sympathy or Paint It Black.
For smaller shows, Midnight Rambler, Honky Tonk Women, The Last Time or IORR.

Yea, something cool like that. Kinda like 'Not Fade Away' on the Voodoo tour. 'Silver Train' would be my wish.

I've always fancied Happy as an opener! I think that would be fantastic - though it will never happen!

What would Mick do?

Well, that's a good idea - first song, Keiths song. But yeah, it won't happen winking smiley

Another great opener is Rocks Off. Raw as in 1973!

The thing about Route 66 as an opener is that they might actually be convinced to try it. And I bet they could rock it hard, so I love straycatuk's idea.

Also love ryanpow's idea of (perhaps an abbreviated) version of 'Last Time,' but only if they have Charlie play the original 2-step beat, not the strange 4/4 version they did in '97-99' - it totally sapped the energy out of the song.

... When they used to open up with Last Time in the mid-60's, it seemed like a pretty frenzied moment for the audience.

So how about an abbreviated 1-2 verse rendition of Last Time, followed by Keith launching into Route 66!!!

Am I Grooving You
the three standing Stones could share the lead vocal very nicely indeed

Tumbling Dice.

You get the lick and then it can sit for a while, like how Thumb sat for a while for Tattoo You, give Mick a chance to get out there, flop around, say Well alright and so on and then get into the verse. It's not a fast song, it's not a slow song, it's got a great groove. And for once they can do a nice outro but not forever and just end it BISH BASH BOOM and it's done, none of this dragging out the lick shit slowing down down down at the end like they have for the last 75 years...
