I have bought the Beach Boys Holland album. It took me a long time to find it.

I am dumbstruck by the sound and the songs...

your thoughts, please.

Holland's the last really good Beach Boys album, I think. Granted, it's no Pet Sounds (what is?), but, compared to what followed and some of what had come before (Carl & The Passions), it was a good album.

On of my favourite Beach Boys albums. there was still some great Beach Boy songs to follow, "feel flows" springs to mind, but this album was maybe the last complete album. My friend Duglas T Stewart, a massive BB fan would argue with me that LOVE YOU was on of their best albums, but thats what interesting about the latter days, lots of great, undervalued gems to be found.

A brilliant album.

Sail On Sailor, California Saga, Only With You, and of course, Blondie Chaplin's gorgeous Leaving This Town.

Great stufff...and nearly as good as 20/20!

I always thought its a great album, dont underlook carl and the passions,Dennis has some choice cuts on it.I made a terrific compilation album from their crappy 70s albums eg,Going South, love surrounds me etc.

California Saga (California) is one of my top 3 or 4 BB songs ever. Harmonies to die for.The chorus is simply one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life.

Its patchy but theres some other really good songs on it - Blondie's "Sail on Sailor", "Leaving This Town" and Carl's "The Trader" for example

The last 6 songs listed above werent on "Holland" but were added to the CD reissue of the album. They're from the bonus EP "Mount Vernon and fairway (A Fairy Tale)"

Dumbstruck? Does that mean you like it?

It's not as good as Surf's Up, the album they released a year earlier, in '71, but it's certainly better than anything that came afterwards. Their last good album before they became a shameless oldies act.

Feel Flows is from Surf's Up (1971). Holland came out in '72.

I actually played the album after reading (and commenting) on this thread. I haven't stopped playing it all day. It really is a superb album.

Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue is coming out next month too in a brand new remaster, complete with outtakes and most of the unfinished Bamboo album.

SURF'S UP is great but was recorded in some really stupid manner (on Cassette or something) so the sound quality is shit. You hear the GIGANTIC drop when you listen it and the album before and after (which I believe was HOLLAND) Anybody know the story on this, I think the details are on some box set I have somewhere (or when the remasters came out), let me check Amazon....

true! last year Blondie asked me to bring a copy for Phil Collins , who happened to stay in the same hotel as the Stones(Brussels). I looked everywhere , couldn't find it.... have never liked Phil Collins anyway...
Anyway, now I have my own copy, which I most certainly won't share with Phil Collins!!!

Exactly JUF, Phil deserves nothing better than the 3rd SPICE GIRLS album... The man can't even drum along properly to 3 Zep songs at LIVE AID - USELESS !!!!!

I realy like most of that album!

Sunflower, Surf's Up and Holland are all good (not great) albums. Spotty, but some great songs. I think Carl and Dennis really stepped up for the mostly MIA Brian during that era. Songs like Carl's Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, Trader; and Dennis's Slip on through, Forever, Steamboat, etc. are forgotten classics! Not to mention Brians few, but excellent contributions to those albums.

I think the best album from that era, however, is the live one!

It's a great time for all things Wilson! Dennis's masterpiece Pacific Ocean Blue will finally be re-released, remastered and with songs from it's aborted follow-up, Bambu. Now, today Brian announced his return to EMI and the release of his highly anticipated That Lucky Old Sun on Sept 2!

The Beach Boys live after all!

Remember, Carl was only 24 or 25 when Surf's Up and Holland were recorded. He was really just hitting his stride as a songwriter, a good five or six years after Brian fizzled out. Long Promised Road could have been an all-time classic were it not for the extremely odd way in which the recording was produced.

Feel Flows is lovely, and was used very effectively in the Almost Famous movie.

Looking forward to picking up Pacific Ocean Blue when it comes out.

Never been a BB's fan.
But in those years they made some great music.

Sail on Sailor is beautiful. And no one mentioned the great funky "Marcella"(?) from Carl & Ps. Have to look for that album cause I lost mine.

Yes! Great track! "Marcella" and "You Need A Mess Of Help to Stand Alone" really stand out on that lame album. If they could have only gotten Brian out of bed more often!
