What is, for you, the best era for the band?
1962-65 (first years)? 1966-67 (psychedelic era)? 1968-1974 (the golden years)? 1975-1978 (Ronnie's first years)? 1980-1986 (the bad years)? 1989-2007 (the coming back)?

I love to make the old threads out of the vaults ! grinning smiley

Quite so !

All of 'em [...though I could survive without the "psychedelic era"]

There are recordings and performances from every "era" which I'd rate as good as anything they've done in any other.

1968 - 1990 Don´t like the R&B an Pop songs until 1967, although they made a few great songs at that time. After 1990 they went a bit lame. Worst in 1997-98. After that, they grew again. But they didn´t any good studio stuff after Steel wheels

I went in the sixth grade at school when I heard the first Stones song on the radio. In four years time I may retire from work! The best era for me was from when they knocked Beatles down to no. 2 in the charts in the middle of the 60's up to the Goats head soup- tour 72/73.

Very tough question. My personal is 69-73. From YaYa's to the 73 European Tour.

Though the 72 US Tour seems to be credited by many as their best. I think the boots from Europe in 73 are more energized, with Taylor truly emerging and pushing Keith to new heights.

I don't know enough of the early era to judge. Listening, the production on their early stuff is awful compared to the Beatles and other bands, it's hard to gauge how good they were or how much energy they really had.

He was talking in productionwise. Seemingly the Stones did suffer not having a 'real' producer prior Jimmy Miller. But ALO's method was a miss or a hit. Sometimes the result were marvellous: I think, for example,"The Last Time" or "Satisfaction" or "Paint It Black" are wonderful records - the chaotic wall sound especially of the first mentioned is hypnotic : I wonder have guitar ever sounded better and so distinguished than in it. But then, "Get Off of My Cloud", "19th Nervous Breakdown" and especially "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby?" are quite horrible to listen nowadays - so muddy.

But one thing is for sure: there is more raw energy in those records than in any of their contemporaries!

Thanks for having my back, Doxa...I indeed was commenting on production value, not the music.

ALO was not a genius in the studio..with getting a great recording. Maybe fun, inspirational, wild (from the sound of ALO Blues)...but it would have been nice to have better sound.
