the whole concert is available officially, after years of being partially bootlegged,
and it's so fine to see the whole thing! the black & white footage is gorgeous ...
The First Barbarians Live from Kilburn. Wooden Records. thanks & praises

According to Wikipedia, the concert was at the Kilburn Gaumont State Theatre (Wikipedia). I assume that is not the same as the Rainbow Theatre.

Yes, you are right - it is not the same as the Rainbow Theatre. But those clips are from a concert that was not performed at the Rainbow Theatre. As already pointed out by sssoul, the DVD is highly recommended.

The gig is from Kilburn Gaumont. Support was from pub rock act Chilli Willi and The Red Hot Peppers. I was there. They never played the Rainbow. It was Ronnie's first and only solo British gig until The Barbarians played Knebworth in 79 supporting Led Zeppelin.

Ronnie's "crow look" at its utmost! He almost got feathers..

Was it was recorded before MT announced his leaving?

They played two nights. Both mid-week, I think. Wed. and Thurs.? I was at one of them - can't remember which! The first i think. Is the official release of the first night?

After a few songs Ronnie (fronting his first ever show?) said nervously - Fun Innit?

At one point they ripped into the Monkey Man riff - is that on the CD? That was magic - I really expected Mick to appear.

Thanks for the reminder that it was Chilli Willi and Peppers as support.

Rod's presence ensured that the Tartan hoards were milling around outside the theatre - and trying to find a bach entrance.

Rod and Faces were at the peak of their popularity in '74 - especially Rod with the young 'ladies'.

why do you think Ronnie had to try out for Mick's position, after playing with Keith in 74.

>> Is the official release of the first night? <<

the second night, apparently - unless all the photographers are wrong about the dates (not impossible)!
the official release avoids specifying which night it's from.

~*YEAH!*~
on the DVD too, to my everlasting joy. during Shirley. and it is HOT!

Well, it's so long ago now and I was a mere whippersnapper of a lad. It was just down the road from where I lived in Swiss Cottage. I remember recording the gig but it turned out pretty muffled so not one of my better ones. Luckily it was captured professionally and preserved in the CD/DVD that came out recently. I remember being absolutely thrilled when Rod came on for If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody and him Ronnie and Keith all singing into one mike. That was so cool. I was also really in Roxy Music back then and couldn't help but notice how Ronnie's Crow jacket resembled the one Eno wore on the inside sleeve of For Your Pleasure.
I was sat downstairs about halfway back in the stalls in this old cinema that had also recently hosted one of the David Bowie Aladdin Sane shows and also a Faces show, if I remember correctly. The Gaumont is right next to a legendary Irish pub called Biddy Mulligans and legend had it that if you didn't stand when the Irish Republican anthem was played at 11pm you risked the wrath of the local IRA who drank there. They served a fine pint of Guinness, which Ronnie may well have sampled.

I believe the cover of 'Now Look' must have come from this gig - Wood & Eno were probably the only rockers 'man' enough to wear feathers & make 'em work.

i just watched it again, and the fact that Ronnie says at the end "i don't know when we'll be back"
would certainly seem to indicate it was the second of the two gigs. and it is hot :E

Mr Dagger,

I was also "not a minute over seventeen" - but was a countrty boy and made the pilgrimage to a big bad city to see the oracle known as Keith.

What I remenber was the large preponderance of Faces fans, cos even Ronnie was a teen idol at that time. But many ofcourse expected to see Rod. There were loads near the front. Many wouldn't have known or cared about Keith. Would have been more thrilled to see MacLagan.

I was in the balcony. When they started the Monkey Man riff I was up out of my seat - at last! - but no-one else stirred, so I had to re-park my bum pronto. (I had thought thje three-pronged mike might have been for Jagger too).

It was when Rod appeared that the place got animated.

Keith at the keybaords doing Act Together was special.

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but I would appreciate some suggestions on where to obtain the DVD & CD. I e-mailed the contact listed at Wooden records last week but never received a reply.

Thanks
