1964.04.17

"The Rolling Stones", the band's very first Long Play album is released with over 100,000 advance copies sold!(in the UK)

My faves: King Bee, Route'66, You Can Make It If You Try, Honest I Do, I Just Wanna Make Love To You, Can I get A Witness.

To tell the truth I love all tracks.
What a beautiful debut!!!
And after so many years they are still rockin'! Unbeleivable.

.

So it sold in advance about four times the amount SAL did in the first week... Perhaps this puts things into perspective now when we are celebrating the 'incredible' success of a new live album... Taking the quantity of over-all sales of albums at the time, that was a huge success. The Stones were really hot!

It was around late July of 1964 that I managed to persuade my mother to buy it from Kays Mail Order catalogue. We already had Not fade Away in the house so it was quite easy convincing her that this would be as good as anything the Beatles had done.

On the morning that it arrived, I played it twice over and from thereon, never looked back.

Just a few weeks before my eighth birthday, that album started me on the trail to becoming the horrible cynic that I am today.

The Rolling Stones is THE debut LP of the mid-1960s. A great slab of RnB and rock ā€˜nā€™ roll.

I really like the sleeve. Words and slogans were most definitely not needed.

The album sold 100,000 copies in advance back in 1964, now the #1 album in UK sell between 30-50k in a "good" week. Times have changed...for worse.

Here's the UK Top 10 of this same week, but in 1964:

April 25, 1964
1 Rolling Stones (By Rolling Stones)
2 With The Beatles (By Beatles)
3 West Side Story (OST)
4 A Session With The Dave Clark Five (By Dave Clark Five)
5 Stay With The Hollies (By Hollies)
6 Please Please Me (By Beatles)
7 Elvis' Golden Records Volume 3 (By Elvis Presley)
8 Blue Gene (By Gene Pitney)
9 A Girl Called Dusty (By Dusty Springfield)
10 Meet The Searchers (By Searchers)

And now in 2008:

April 19, 2008
1 ~ Duffy ~ Rockferry
2 ~ Rolling Stones ~ Shine A Light
3 ~ REM ~ Accelerate
4 ~ Courteeners ~ St. Jude
5 ~ Leona Lewis ~ Spirit
6 ~ Nickelback ~ All The Right Reasons
7 ~ OneRepublic ~ Dreaming Out Loud
8 ~ Scouting For Girls ~ Scouting For Girls
9 ~ Amy Winehouse ~ Back To Black
10 ~ James ~ Hay Ma!

Bloody hell - am I old? I recognize all those artists back in 1964, but only about half of the current list...

The times has really changed, but at THAT time - when the big thing was a single - I think the over-all selling of the albums was still behind our days but on their way to reach the massive markets of the 70's and 80's. It was the albums by ones like the Beatles and The Stones to rise the interest from singles to albums. So I suppose the success of the first Stones album was expectional among the albums (even though the comptetion - volume of releases - was not a huge one). It looks like that The Beatles and The Stones really dominated the UK album (and single) charts from 1964 to 1966.

(I guess the situation was a bit different in U.S where people were more used to to LP format by then, that is, the teenagers had more spare money to spend. In Europe the albums were still quite investiments...For that reason they didn't put singles into albums, etc. it would have 'betraying' or 'cheap trick' to try to sell the same product twice, and might have damaged the sells. I think that is one of the reasons why The Stones were treating the U.S. market with different release policy.)

But anyway, georgelicks, you are a master in statistics, so perhaps you can correct me if I talk here total bull...

If they were to release the UK edition, they'd have done so back in 2002 when they reissued the UK Out Of Our Heads, Aftermath and Between The Buttons.

Maybe they overlooked it because there is only one song difference? Mona instead of Not Fade Away.

There is more of a case point for The Rolling Stones No 2 being realeased IMO. Its a travesty thats not on CD racks.
