Stones at the 100 Club (1982) - any memories?
Posted by: Greenblues ()
Date: April 14, 2008 14:46

On May 30, 1982 the Rolling Stones played a surprise gig at the 100 Club, London billed as "Diz and the Doormen". I'm sure this may have been covered here before, but I'm still curious. Any impressions available here? Does any recording exist?

Theres no recording of it thats ever circulated AFAIK. Likewise with the private gig at the same venue four years later

Gazza, like you I've never heard of a recording circulated although I heard from a pretty reliable source that the same "whoever" that supplied the big influx of 81 sbs that appeared in the last years verified a copy exists! I guess we can only dream.

Diz Watson of the Doormen (whos were support) as well as playing piano with charlies Rocket ** also played in my cousins Ron Kavanas band Juice On THe Loose. Ron was at the gig acting as a roadie for the doormen. He later claimed he tried to call me asking if i wanted to help hump some gear, unfortunatly I was not at home but helping out in a mates record shop, Rocks Off, only 200 yards away in hanway street.
Ron tells me that diz later got invoiced for a bottle of JD they finished off in the dressing room.
The next day rumours were rife that the would be playing the marquee, didnt happen.

According to Zentgraf the set list was just the one used during the '82 tour (most prominent change compared to the American tour being "Chantilly Lace")

One of the most sought-after concerts from the 'recent' years
HOw were the tickets distributed? Was it mostly for invited guests? Anybody knows?

That would be the '86 show at that venue, not '82. The '86 show was a tribute to Stu.

as I recall, being in london at the time, that on the afternoon of the gig, a few flyers were distributed around covent garden to announce the gig. the lucky few who saw it made a bee-line to the 100 club to win a prized place in the venue.
i was so bummed that i missed it!

Please refresh my memory....when they received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement
Award....did the accept it (on video) at the 100 CLub? I think that was 1986. (?)
Did they also play a private gig that night? Was that recorded?

Oh wait...just found these...

courtesy of Bill German's BEggars Banquet.

Is there a recording of this 100 Club Show?

IORR............but I like it!

The Phoenix show hasn't surfaced yet mate, the Fan Club should give us the club show as the free DVD we've been waiting years for!

Filmed? Really? I gotta check that out.

I'm very reliably told that the Stones went to a lot of unusual effort to make sure that the gig wasn't recorded (which seems counter to the filming!) - even checking the usual source... the soundboard guys!

It was a gig in memory of Stu and thus was off-scale special to them all.

However... I few years ago I was reading a biography of someone fairly well known, and he mentioned being at the show, and that he'd recorded it!

The wicked bootlegger was none other than Paul McCartney!

That would certainly reconcile the information. Do you know for sure that he did?

(Since my earlier posting I've been searching for the quote in a (reputable) book that forms the basis of my comments. Still hunting. I've found several mentions in emails from many years ago, but they don't count until I've found my source. Still hunting).

Edit: Found it!

The claim is recorded in "The Beatles : After The Breakup : 1970 - 2000" by Keith Badman. Omnibus Press 1999.

Page 366 in the general February 1986 entry... "This month, Paul and Linda watch the Rolling Stones in performance at the 100 Club in Oxford Street where he makes a private "unauthorised" audiotape of the show."

Phew!

How sad that they did not release a charity CD in benefit of heart research! This would have done Stu proud!

Bill German says he was there in his book "Under Their Thumb" and gives the setlist as:

ROUTE 66 (with SIMON KIRKE as CHARLIE absent)
DOWN THE ROAD APIECE
KEY TO THE HIGHWAY (with Eric Clapton)
CONFESSIN' THE BLUES (with EC)
I'M A MAN (with EC)
BYE BYE JOHNNY (with EC and JEFF BECK, EC off at end)
HARLEM SHUFFLE (with JB and PETE TOWNSEND)
LITTLE RED ROOSTER (with JB and PT - SK off at end, CW on)
MEET ME IN THE BOTTOM (EC back on until end)
DUST MY BROOM
LITTLE QUEENIE

He doesn't say if Beck and Townsend stayed on until the end but given how precise he is about the other personnel changes and he doesn't say they came off...

I loved the detail about Ron Wood playing slide with a Heineken bottle on Little Red Rooster

Good book if you've not read it

So I gather that rather than it being filmed (as mailexile67 states), it was only audiotaped according to Keith Badman (cool name lol).

Good luck on getting our hands on this one - I've heard that Sir Paul is a hoarder of this type of stuff. moody smiley
