The "It's good to be here, it's good to be anywhere" joke!
Posted by: Keith The Beast ()
Date: March 30, 2008 06:11

The first time I heard it I laughed out loud, thought it was great, I would still get a chuckle after the first time but now I only laugh out of the fact that Keith still does it and genuinely seems to still find it funny (like on Shine A Light) and he still gets a reaction out of it from the crowd. Does anyone still find it funny when you hear it? And anyone knows when was the first time Keith did the joke?

Haha - good one Rockman

as a matter of fact, at the Beacon he doesn't even say "It's good to be here, it's good to be anywhere"

instead he says: It's good to see ya all, you know - It's good to see anybody.
which brings it to a new and funny point.

I still love that line and get a laugh out of it when I use it from time to time.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

I think he started using it opening night of the BTB tour in Chicago though it was a little shorter, "It's great to be here, hey, it's just great to be!"

i first heard him say it in 1995. he's attributed it to Max Miller,
but i guess it was "traditional" before Max used it.

as open-g notes, the "good to see you, good to see anybody" variation is what Keith says in the film,
and it's quite funny on a few levels at once - especially if people don't even notice he's changed it :E

I always laugh when hearing it live, not because it's particularly funny, but I'm amazed and delighted about the fact that Keith
is still alive and kickin' and ready to screw up the intro of Brown Sugar once again. You gotta love the man.

The first time was Nürnberg 1998, after he had fallen from a ladder in his
home in CT, looking for a book. The beginning of the whole European tour
was rescheduled. Those days were like hell tome. Tourstart had to be
Berlin, May 22nd, start was Nürnberg 1998, June 13th.

The Stones are entertainers and it would be impossible to have a different patter every night, just because the hard fans core see them every gig most people only see them once every every tour so Keith repeating his line is only being heard for the first time by the majority.

I am an entertainer and every time I perform I repeat certain lines knowing the audience will react but also knowing that one or two people may have heard it before, it's just one of those things.

Entertainers have said that they can tour for years and not have to change their material but as soon as they have been seen on TV they can't use it again, perhaps if Keith uses it in the next tour it may well be past it's sell by date. But , hey, so what, it's the music we go to see not what line he is spinning.

do they also find that when they do change it, no one even notices?
the power of what we think we know has come up on a couple of different threads lately -
see above: in Shine a Light Keith doesn't use the "good to be here" line -
he uses a variation of it, which is quite funny

Yeah, of course, I laugh outloudly, but I always have to laugh when Keith's mumbles something into the microphone.

But remember, in 2007, Keith never sayed it!

It's a classic line, just like "Elvis has left the building". Don't see a problem with it..

I guess one could say that line takes on a whole new meaning after that day in Fiji.

At that cold, cold Chicago show in October of 2006, after Fiji, it was "I've been through a war."

It's his standard line, his "I don't get no respect" or "Take my wife, please". Someone ought to write some new material for him. Maybe someone on this board. We could have a contest.

It does get irritating, especially since I only see them once or twice a tour and he still says it like it's spontaneous. Keith did this thing for a while where he'd go over to the keyboard at some point and play a note with his boot. I thought it was a spontaneous gesture until I saw him do it again at the same point. Let's face it, they basically play a very good Vegas act with a few surprises thrown in each concert to keep it from being totally fabricated. There's too much staging and lighting cues and fireworks to allow for much spontaneity.

If there's a next tour he should focus on actually playing guitar instead of coming up with those "one-liners".

Heard that first in Eriksberg, Gothenburg in the summer of 1990. Seems to me Keith is basically very shy. In public he has a hard time stringing together more than two sentences. And what he says is often hardly audible. It sounds like a drunken slur... .

I like all the things Keith says on stage. The one I really love is this: "Ahhh, Toronto...it's good to be home".

Yeah, still have an already printed tour shirt of that Berlin gig that never happened.

definitely overused, but i guess i still laugh when i hear it ... i guess he wrote one now, but my favorite Keith line was when asked why he never wrote an autobiography ... he said "because i don't know how it ends"

even if reherased its nice to see him interact a bit with the audience. if i recall correctly at roseland he made some referecne to the intimate setting with "what about this room, its a good room isn't it?" Maybe he used that in all the clubs that year, i dont know. And, at the Beacon I think he said something about having not played Connection since he was on the same stage with the Winos years ago--clearly a line he couldn't use more than once!!

Hey, we'll all be happy to be in a position to hear him say, yet again,"Its good to be here..." sometime in the next year or so, won't we??
