Great cover versions

Okay, this is a bit OT but I just played Atlantic City from The Band album Jericho, and I think it surpasses Springsteens original. Any others spring to mind?

I always thought The Stones version of Ain't Too Proud Too Beg was better than the original. I haven't heard the AC version you are talking about but it's hard to imagine anyone outdoing Springsteen when it comes to that song.

"Lyin' awake in a cold, cold sweat. Am I overdrawn, am I going in debt?
It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

All the Dave Clark 5 covers were better than the originals. I wish they had done 'Da Doo Run Run' and Quarter To Three".

I loved their version of "Got What it Takes"

Yep, Nebraska is such a wonderful album. The Band take on Atlantic City comes with bells and whistles, yet it works. Springsteen is so sparse. I bet Gazza has an opinion on this matter!

There is sooooo many. I will say Stones do superp versions on Berrys "Carol" and "Around and Around". In the same way Beatles do "Rock'n'Roll Music" in a great version.

Sorry, but the Stones' cover of "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" does not compare with The Temptations. Definitely love "Carol" and "Around and Around" though.

me too. the stones cover was a song I got into really early on (Charlie gets into such a great groove at the end) but the temps verison never did much for me. Although recently I have gained more of an apprecaitation for it. On recent live versions by the stones the horn section has payed tribute to the OG version.

The Stones Around and Around from the TAMI show! Great version

The Stones were basicly a cover band for their first five U.S. albums. They excelled at american soul songs.

I did too! I think Marv Johnson did the original.

Also dig the one man horn section--another one of those absurd moments in lip-synced videos.

I once saw a DC 5 promo single in a used record store that I didn't buy but I wish I had...it was a little pricey...the date on it was 1970..which surprised me cause I thought they had called it quits long before then.

It was them doing a cover version of Neil Young's "Down By the River!"

I can't imagine what that must have sounded like.

Not Fade Away by the stones is probably my fav cover version, just perfect!

Agree. Like Aretha's version of Respect, it blows the original out of the water.

Agree with Going'To A Go-Go, IMHO the best track from Still Live and better than the original by The Miracles.

I think Irma Thomas original of Time Is On My Side is better than the Stones hit-version.

Highway 61 Revisited- Johnny Winter

Champagne and Reefer- Ian Moore (from the Hempilation benefit album, well worth seeking out for this track alone- lots of other good songs too even if you do not smokeeye popping smiley)

Baby, Let Me Follow You Down- Bob Dylan and The Band (the Rockin' version from The Last Waltz)

As much as I dislike the Beatles, there are some great cover versions of Beatles songs:

Fool On The Hill - Aretha
And I Love Her - Bobby Womack
I Want To Hold Your Hand - Al Green

Also...
Light My Fire - Al Green
China Girl - Bowie
Respect - Aretha
Satisfaction - Otis
Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin

Also, cbtaco, there's no way Johnny Winter's version of HWY 61 is better than Dylan's - nor is the Dolls version of Pills better than Bo Diddley's.

Loog - I also prefer Aretha's Respect, but I don't think it beats Otis' by that much.

That version of AC is fantastic - don't know if it's better, per se, but it definitely brings a really nice flavor. Gotta love the Band

Nobody says the versions are better, just that they are good. Johnny Winter does a great cover of HWY 61. I'd have to argue with you about Pills though, I think the Dolls made it their own.
