promo albums ?

I have a few of these , mainly recent stuff, 10 licks , live licks sampler,Amex presents and the sacd issue , needless to say can't lay my hands on any of them at the moment.
What I would like to know is,
Is there a comprehensive list somewhere on the web that I could look up , and also who chooses the tracks for these promo editions some of them are very good and some are quite bizare.

Very impressive Jos ,

Looks like you were waiting for someone to ask a question just like mine.

I suppose these are releasewd just randomly ,that is to say not in any set order or chronology?, but why can't they just give the various outlets the regular issues with promotion writen on them , after all they are meant to be reviewing/promoting the things that regular people buy.
Or better still let us have the odd bonus instead of the music industry

The promo market is a bizarre one. Most of the earlier ones are basic limited track releases often without artwork (notable exceptions are the Japanese Promos). In other words they probably were genuinely rushed out to allow journalists to hear the new music. Over the last decade or so the music industry has also got wise to the large promo collecting market and there are few genuinely rare promos produced since the millenium.

An item being promo doesn't automatically mean it is going to be rare or valuable but the odds are better than that of a commercial release. Some promos can fetch $1,000's but there are plenty to collect at $10 a pop.

After the "who's Matt Lee" comment last week I thought it probably was time I started adding some value and posting occasionally! Collecting is my thing so here goes with my top 10 items to check your CD racks for.

1) The Greatest 3 / SPCD-1524-26
This is the Jewel in almost any CD collection. Stupidly rare and sought by Stones, Beatles and Queen collectors alike. Bite anyones hand off at $2,000 but be prepared to pay $3,000 or more especially if the CD's are sealed.

2) Voodoo Lounge Tour Souvenir / SPCD-1481
Probably the rarest Stones only Promo CD with full artwork. Believed to be a concept compilation album that didn't get approved. Expect to pay c.$2,500

3) Steel Wheels Japan Tour / XDDP 93034~5
A great promo compilation to promote the first Japanese Tour. A cracking track list with tour date artwork. Never an easy one to find, your looking at c.$2,000

4) Terrifying / CSK 1897
The first non Japanese entry in my top 10 comes from our American friends and is one of the most likely for you not to realise you own due to its poor appearance and lack of artwork. An easy $1,500 if you find one in your racks!

5) Out of Tears / DPRO-14237
Not to be confused with the common $5 Out of Tears promo with extactly the same catelogue number this is the "pink spikey tongue" version seen on the right next to its common brother. Be prepared to shell out around $1,000

6) Bridges To Babylon / CD REPS 158
The rarest French promo commands a cool $1,000 if you can find one. Originally I got just 2 copies and have since only found 1 more!

7) Welcome to Japan Licks / PCD-2727
The Japanese are the promo experts! A collection of 10 live warhorses but with unique and interesting artwork. Around the $750 mark

8) The Pleasure of Pain / XDDP 93082~3
One of the most legendary promos. Again a stunning Japanese production! These are what I would call a "popular collectable". Common enough for people to know about it and desire it but just rare enough to command a decent price. These have suffered recently by several copies changing hands in a short period $750.

9) Mixed Emotions / XDEP 93039
A cute Japanese promo with the artwork composed of 3 stickers on a slimline jewel case. Very tough to find with all 3 stickers in nice condition. $750

10) Out of Tears / VSCDG 1524
Finally a UK CD! This was due to be a commercial release so it shouldn't really be in the list (shoot me, I'm British). This was pulled due to the fact it has 5 tracks which would disqualify it from the single chart, a new rule at the time. These leaked out in France where some had been sent before the withdrawl as imports. $400

The chasing pack is large but would include CD's such as the following
Angie / PCD0862 / Japan
Start Me Up / PCD0679 / Japan
The Rolling Stones 1963-1971 / ROLCD 1 / UK
Love Is Strong / RS12-CD / Spain
Sympathy For The Devil / ROLLPRO 1 / Australia
Too Great To Make You Wait / CSK4004
Rock 'n' Roll Circus / 1211-2 / USA

Please let me know if you have any questions or any interesting Stones items! I am always looking to trade.

Happy Collecting!

Matt

Hey Matt, what's on this one? Live tracks? Just wondering what the "concept" was. One more question: what tracks are exclusive to promo releases? I know "Dance (Instrumental)" is one, and I think there's a live "Out Of Tears" that was only on a promo.

ONE OF THE BEST POSTS IN A LONG TIME! Thanks for the fascinating information about the Promos.
Where did you find most of your stuff? Where should one begin their collection?

It has I can't be satisfied, Learning the Game, Bob Wills, Night Time and one other. It was released by Universal to radio stations. I have a copy because a friend of mine works as a DJ.

I have a promo 'acetate' CD of Rain Fall Down with 7 tracks - 6 different mixes of Rain Fall Down + Under The Radar. I've never seen it listed anywhere. I picked it up at a record fair in Manchester, and I'm not 100% certain it's legit, as it's so easy to fake these so-called 'acetates'. Anyone else come across this one?

There is a 7 track RFD out there incl. Under The Radar, don´t know if
it´s an acetate, though.

An attempt to answer the various questions!

Glam Descendant:
Voodoo Lounge Tour Souvenir (VLTS) doesn't have any live tracks just a mixture of VL tracks and warhorses (can you see them on the photo below to save typing?). The unconfirmed rumour about VLTS is that it was to be released in Japan but Mick just told the record company to sell more Voodoo Lounge! Out of Control is the only LIVE track I can think of right now that was Promo only although if you extend the question to remixes I will be here all day!

Whitem8:
I started collecting 10 years ago and just took it seriously! I started with CD's but very quickly moved to press kits, posters, displays, passes, clothing, autographs etc... (I specialise in items that were never sold in stores or as merchandise). The problem with promo/concert stuff is that it is never ending, you will have a hobby for life :-). eBay is a great place to start but I suggest trading with other collectors and making friends is probably more fun. Anyone interested in trading just email me on: mattleeuk@gmail.com

NickB:
I presume you mean the Bigger Bang Promo with 6 old and 6 new tracks. There are both US and UK versions of these. Check eBay but they probably go for about $20 to $40.

UrbanSteel:
The UK chart rules do say you can't have 5 tracks on a single (unless they are remixes of the same track) so "Out of Tears" did break those rules. I was however going to write the alternate faulty CD theory too as it has a lot of merit but I think the truth is no one really knows. It is true that most of the CD's look like they have been attacked by an electric sander (I have personally had about 40 different copies in the last 10 years and seen as many more). I don't think it makes the 5 track theory WRONG given both have a lot of merit.

Here are close ups of the track listings of the ones you probably can't read above....

Martinw, there is indeed a real 7 track CD-R for Rain Fall Down (pictured below). Yours is likely to be real (if it looks like the one below) as there aren't actually that many CD-R's that are faked copies, they tend to be just made up new ones with a different track list and with no disrespect to our German friends often come from there (exactly like most of the repro'd posters that try to look real rather than the honestly reprinted ones with a white boarder).

I am ashamed to say a lot of the fake autographs I see come from the UK. I guess because people have a story to tell. Just like the guy that got about 10 Woody autographs backstage at Led Zepplin. Unfortunately for him I was there and Ronnie definately was not.

I have photographed a selection of 4 UK Rain Fall Down CD-R's that are all real below.

Also think this is a GREAT thread indeed.

I mostly go for the music, so I wouldn't start collecting promos myself, but I can nevertheless share some of the excitement that collectors like Matt or JR might feel for all those treasures and the extra care they apply, handling and categorising them, be it LP or CD. In the end there's a little collector in us all, I think.
