Yes Thommie, Sandown's a great track, we used to go to every meeting when we lived nearer, saw many great horses in the Whitbread (now the Gold Cup).

Mr Stargroves and I got married on Whitbread Cup day. We both thought we had to put the bets on that day and the first thing we said in the vestry, waiting to sign the register, was that we had each put the money down, so the maximum bet had been doubled. The vicar thought this was an unusual conversation to start a marriage with, but that was nearly 20 years ago, when Desert Orchid won at 11/2. So the horse won and we're still together.

But there is nothing like Cheltenham...

Great story Stargroves! Thanks for sharing.

As a racing fan, you may enjoy a movie called "Let It Ride", starring Richard Dreyfus.

Thanks, I've not heard of that one. I've googled it and will have to track it down. Every now and again the local film society in the next village has racing themed films on, but this is always a very tricky night to host. I live in Lambourn, human population around 3,000, racehorse population 1,900, so you can imagine most of the audience tend to work in the industry and they tend to be very critical of the racing sequenceseye rolling smiley!

This is the best team in Norway right now. My local Team Frisk Asker. They won the Norwegian Ice Hockey series a few weeks ago and are in the middle of play-off games right now. Funny thing we have the lowest budget of all teams and youngest team average age 21 but they are the fastest and are very offensive. The photo is showing Norway's best ice hockey player Mats Aasen which is in our team of course, and my company logo in the left background. We are now chasing the Norwegian cup champion gold medals...

I like Olympic/European ice hockey. In the NHL in N. America, they play on the smaller ice rink...I'm not a fan of that at all. I like the speed of Olympic hockey.

It's almost baseball season. I'm hoping the Pittsburgh Pirates can have a win more than they lose for the first time in years!

Hey Stargroves. Nice to hear you are a big racing fan. I live on the west coast of the US and I am a huge horse racing fan. As well as overall sports junkie. I would dearly love to come to England one of these days and go to one of the fine race tracks over there. As well as a Stones show of course.smileys with beer...In the meantime our big race, the Kentucky Derby is only a little over a month away now. Early tip on a winner. A horse called Pyro. Seriously, this horse has amazing talent.

And have I said lately,GO SHARKS!! I will now stop giving Boston crap for the worst trade ever(but thanks again for joe thornton) and will now ridicule Buffalo. Thanks for Brian Campbell. Where is The Sicilian these days anyway?tongue sticking out smiley

As a Wisconsinite I don't look foreward to a year of NFL (American) football without our great leader BRETT FAVRE. Surely one of the greatest ever to play the game. I have to question where professional sports is headed when we have to cover increased prices to cover the outragios contracts these guys get for "playing" a sport. The same goes for entertainers (including my beloved ROLLING STONES).

Did anyone see Billy Crystal take batting practice with the Yankees on the news this morning?
I only caught a bit of it, but he looked pretty good.

Yeah that was a joke. They actually signed him to a contract just so he could get 1 at bat in a real exhibition game. So they made him the DH and had him leadoff the game, then took him out. He struck out. What an egomaniac.

I laugh at the protestations of Billy Crystal's appearance in a spring training game with the Yankees. Celebrity showings in exhibition games are nothing new.

Billy is a lifelong Yankees fan (I'll forgive him for that LOL), and he directed a great movie called "*61". He also contributed commentary to Ken Burns' "Baseball".

As for his appearance in the game, he got the count to 3-1 before the Pirates' pitcher had to bear down and strike him out. Not bad for a nearly 60-year-old man, huh? Way to go, Billy. I loved it.

Buttle wins gold in men's skating

Photo: REUTERS

ROSIE DI MANNO

GOTEBORG, Sweden-Jeff Buttle is golden.
At the Scandinavium Arena this afternoon, the 25-year-old became Canada’s first male world figure skating champion since Elvis Stojko in 1997.

And, skating last on the day, he had to beat two former world title-holders in order to do it.

It was a triumphant, emphatic victory - nearly 14 full points ahead of the defending and ousted global champion, Brian Joubert of France, who finished silver, though dragging himself up from sixth after Friday’s error-riddled short program.

So who says quadruple jumps separate the men from the boys at the world championships?

Buttle doesn’t have a four-rotation trick, at least not since he last landed it at Four Continents in 2003.

Didn’t matter, on this day, though, with rivals splatting their quads all over the place and Buttle cleanly, beautifully, executing three polished triple Axels, a trio of combination tricks - two of them ad-libbed on the spot - and eight triples overall. In doing so, he also handily took the free skate by 10 points.

Bronze went to American Johnny Weir.

Canada’s other male entrant, Patrick Chan, finished a respectable ninth at his debut world championships.

It was the first time, since 1988, that Canada has medalled in three different skating disciplines at the global spectacle: gold for men (Buttle), silver in ice dancing (Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir) and bronze in pairs (Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison). Joannie Rochette was fifth among women.

A long time, it’s been, though, for a moment such as this.

“And they have been waiting patiently,’’ said Buttle afterwards, of his country’s yearning for gold, especially from men.

“Perhaps with bated breath.’’

A year ago, he was second after the short program but dropped to sixth overall after a botched long. That was not going to happen again, he’d sworn to himself.

“This year I was much more prepared, better trained. I wanted to go out there and skate my best, not worrying about what I don’t have and do have, but just enjoy myself. My honest expectation? Just to improve over last season.

“This, obviously, exceeds my expectations and I’m very pleased with that.’’

Buttle - bronze medallist at the Turin Olympics and silver at worlds in 2005 in Moscow - throughout the competition, out in front after Friday’s short program and with only himself to beat after most challengers came up lacking yesterday under world pressure.

“It’s a deserving title and he’s a deserving champion,’’ crowed Michael Slipchuk, director of high performance for Skate Canada.

“It’s one thing to win a world title, but he convincingly won it.’’

All those medals shining brightly for Canada also indicates the country’s figure skating program is on track, certainly for the Olympics.

“To come out of here with three of each color is unbelievable,’’ said Slipchuk. “We’ve had something to celebrate every night. We have a big one to celebrate tonight.

“We kind of feel it was destiny.’’

This is kind of funny.
I'm watching the first race of the new IndyCar season, and starting 19th is a new driver that came from the Champ cars.

His real name is Will Power.

Looks like Tiger's gonna have a bit of work ahead of him over the weekend. From where he is now, I'll be rooting for him to start picking off those ahead of him bit by bit. I think that if he was in the lead, I'd be pulling for somebody else to come from the pack.

At the track, I've always been a sucker for the stong closers.

A new "world's fastest human." Usain Bolt from Jamaica.
This kid is only 21 years old, and huge. He's 6'5" or about 195cm. That's big for a sprinter.
Incredible!
