Question on GLIYWI
Posted by: straycat58 ()

I'm listening at the GLIYWI CD and found out that the CD from abcko has a different Long John Baldry intro with the names of the members of the band, one by one, compared with the CD London.
Not only: Under my thumb is different text and also the rhythm section and solos are different, although I guess they both come from the same 66 UK Tour.
If we assume that the London CD version is from Newcastle 2nd show, I wonder where the version on abcko comes from.
Satisfaction is almost one minute shorter on the abcko CD but looks to me the same version: very unusual that abcko has filled with one minute of audience.

You have more information about it?

Yes, Under My Thumb comes from a different 66 concert at the ABKCO CD release. Seen it mentioned as being from Bristol; but I wonder how anyone could know the exact date/location, since there are no audience recordings.

Yes, almost impossible, although Bill writes in his book that Glyn Johns recorded many shows of the tour and I suppose the tapes exist. Maybe one day...

Other point: I'm pretty sure that I'm alright is the same backsound version of the EP, which means that this version is not from 66. If you compare the two version , even the guitar licks are identical.

Strange,

According to F. Aepply, the London version propose the Royal Albert Hall version and the 1987 Abkco CD the Newcastle version.

The version of I'm Alright on the album is definitely the same version from the ep so that ain't from 1966.

Tks mitch, I have the Aeppli guide, and I forgot to check in it.
But I agree with Erik; difficult to say the exact source, also considering there were two shows at each venue.
Anyway, looks strange to me that this album has been completed with three tracks not belonging to the tour (if we add I'm alright). I consider it a great album although I read different opinions.
Also strange this choice ob abkco to close satisfaction with a minute of audience: this is a nonsense.
But it's great to have 2 versions of UMT; in the abkco one the intro is even wrong, as there's a mess in the guitar intro of Not fade away.

That tour fascinates me, more because there's so very little out there from it.

Because of the overdubs etc the album is a poor representation of it imo, and apart from the RAH, there doesn't seem to be any photos or footage of them onstage from the other venues, weird!

My thoughts as well. Hardly ever read or see anything about this 1966 UK Tour.
Almost like the 1971 UK Tour - a big lack of photographers and people making audience recordings.

You're right, but...
according to some sources, Peter Whitehead filmed the rehearsals in Newcastle.
This is Zentgraf:

1st October: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, City Hall. Rehearsal.
Filmed by Peter Whitehead.

and, as I wrote, Glyn Johns taped most of the shows.

Bill Wyman wrote: "Got Live If You Want It Got Live we recorded on 4-track. Some of the vocals were overdubbed later and some of the guitars, too. I remember Mick and keith going into the studio a few times on that one. Charlie and I didn't do any studio stuff so the rhythm section is pretty much from our concerts. Plus there are two studio cuts, of course, Fortune Teller and I've Been Loving You Too Long with audience tracks overdubbed on them. Don't forget in those days we didn't do very long shows, we used to play 25 minutes at the most if you or we were lucky. Kids would get onstage, attack me, attack Brian, Charlie, Mick and Keith. So you would have the guitar go out for twenty seconds, drums, etc., half a minute where you would lose the bass or drums completely. Out of six shows you would be lucky to get together a full set LP."

Peter Whitehead also filmed the Stones receiving the gold records award at Kensington and the BTB sessions at the Olympic Studios in November 66 (some footages are already available). All this videos very likely still exists and there's a video of Peter Whitehead on YouTube in which he shows his studio with tons of material piled on shelves. Probably there's a problem of royalties, fees, I don't know...

I really hope that one day all this stuff will surface, together with the Gomelsky movie at the Crawdaddy, with the Olympia 64 concert, etc. etc.
