You know what....I would never discount what the Beatles accomplished, but their longevity brings into question their "greatest" stature. When's the last time a Beatle was relevant? Band on the Run?

Of course we are all partial to the Stones, but they are still creating new music and selling out concerts.

If we're partial to The Stones because they're still creating new music and selling out concerts, I think it's a safe bet that Paul McCartney is still very relevant. He does the same.

To be true, of all the old 'big' 60's farts, only Bob Dylan can be seen artistifically relevant - the rest are just nostalgy acts.

I don't know what the world is coming to, when a band like The Rolling Stones aren't allowed to play a kick-ass song like Jumping Jack Flash. I didn't go to my first concert in 1998 to see a nostalgy act. I went to see a great band that played great songs. And we all know that their best songs is from around 1968 to 1972 right? Should they just neglect all those songs? What happened a few months into the ABB Tour and they hadn't played Street Fighting Man a all? "Oh I miss SFM" and "Why don't they play that one" all over the place. People seem to like warhorses and why shouldn't they? They're great songs. It's like when Dave Grohl said that The Stones sucked because they still play Satisfaction. What a crock of shite. A good song is like wine. Not vinegar.
About Dylan: When he pulls out a song from his early days it's just as much a nostalgy trip as when The Stones play Brown Sugar. The fact that they just play their old song more than Dylan tends to with his, is another discussion. Artistifically relevant - Pfff. When I heard Modern Times I immediately thought: "Nothing new under the sun". I mean come on: It's not like he's Tom Waits that goes from Closing Time to Bone Machine, or David Bowie that goes from Oh You Pretty Things to Moss Garten. The Stones don't do this either, but they're at least great with what they do. I can live without hearing Dylan singing sheep songs for the umpteenth time - And then it doesn't matter if it's old or new.

*No pun intended to Dylan fans BTW*

And no mention of Neil Young either. Shame. I'd say he mort than any of the old 60s brigade is still turning it on. At least one in more or less every three albums these days is a worthy addition to his cannon of work. His latest Chrome Dreams II is a stonker.

well, isn't this thread called "Greatest BANDS Of All Time"??

So maybe one should mention Crazy Horse here, but today I rather go for the

Stray Gators, the line-up with Kenneth Buttrey on drums!

The production just wasn't there. Even the early Elvis stuff (Sun Studio's) sounds bad and his biggest hits don't sound THAT good. The Beatle's releases were an AMAZING leap forward in production.......

PS Thanks Silver Dagger..... yeah, it's an addiction, glad you like the list......

We are not talking about production techniques, we are talking about the greatest bands of all time, not the greatest bands since the sixties. And I beg to differ about production techniques being inferior, some was far superior than some of the crap being dished up in the name of remastering today. Ah, but what the heck, I am just an old bugger with great memories.

Hate to burst your bubble but the last time a Beatle was relevant was about the last time the Stones were relevant. Lets face it buddy, tho the Stones have certainly been a touring force the past 25-30 yrs, their music has hardly been relevant.

As far as "the best" bands go, The Band should definitely be included in a short list.

I was about to say it says BANDS, not individuals.

This list, whatever, has nothing to do with 'being relevant' and all that BULLSHIT people like to throw about. Relevant? A band? Buying records and going to see a band is a LUXURY. I think 'relevant' just replaces 'new and good' or 'new and bad', depending on how it's used. For some people the fu*cking Beach Boys are relevant even though they haven't done anything worth a goddamn before 1948. This list is how it is for me.

1. The Rolling Stones
2. U2
3. The Cult
4. AC/DC
5. Drive-By Truckers
6. The Who
7. The Beatles - relevant? It's good music right? Then it's relevant.
8. The Band - see The Beatles
9. Pink Floyd - uhhh, not ALL of their records but the obvious...
10. Nirvana
