hmm, how true... but now I want him to do a 70s song!--rooster's suggestion of "I Wish I Was Your Mother." I suppose I could ask anyway.

What was the opening instrumental song of his The Gunslingers Tour with Jim Satten Band?

Theme of Peter Gunn. Now I remember. It's 50's or 60's, though.

Love to hear Refugee by Tom Petty (1979)

I think Ronnie could do a nice version.

if he chooses as the Stones do, he won't do a song by someone who followed him, like Petty, or even Iggy (though Iggy is close).

Sign Language by Bob Dylan.

"Sign Language" is a great choice. So is "Six Blade Knife," but I can't imagine Ronnie going near anything from Knopfler as I don't think he's well regarded by any of the Stones. I'd like to hear "Thankyoufalettinmebemyselfagain" as we were cheated out of it last year on the European tour.

why not? Is he too academic a player? He strikes me somewhat like Ry Cooder.

There are definite similarities to Ry Cooder in Knopfler's playing (as well as Clapton, of course). I based my statement on the fact that I am unaware of any of the Stones ever mentioning him whatsoever in interviews and certainly not working with him. Knopfler performed the same night Mick and Bowie sang at The Prince's Trust in 1986 and Mick and Keith have both worked with Knopfler's band members over the years (Guy Fletcher, Chris White, Chad Cromwell, Glenn Worf), but apart from Clapton and Tina Turner, they don't ever appear to move in the same circles. Knopfler also isn't the most easy-going guy on the planet and doesn't seem to cultivate many friendships in the business (note his lack of nomination for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame). I love his music, but I don't expect him to move in the same world as the Stones any time soon and I wouldn't expect Ronnie to consider songs from the first two Dire Straits albums for his project.

I don't know if it would fit your definition of working with a Stone, but Knopfler worked with Mick Taylor on Bob Dylan's 1983 album Infidels. And Knopfler and the Stones both appear on the Chieftains 1995 album "The Long Black Veil", although I don't think they worked together on any tracks.

I don't think Knopfler would have too much troubled getting nominated if he wanted to be in the RNRHOF. But does he want to? This year they're inducting Madonna and they still haven't inducted Alice Cooper. The RNRHOF is becoming a bigger joke all the time.

I tossed in AC/DC's Girls' Got Rhythm.

Let's just hope he doesn't rerelease the same old tired songs again for the 50th time or, hopefully, he doesn't re-record them...

Re: New album Ronnie Wood!

No disrespect intended to the very talented Mr. Taylor, but I wasn't thinking of ex-Stones. For that matter, Knopfler has worked with The Rhythm Kings in recent years as well. I love the Chieftains album with "Long Black Veil" and "Rocky Road to Dublin," but those two Stones-related tracks and Knopfler's track (actually an outtake from his GOLDEN HEART album) did not overlap. As for the Rock Hall, the nominating committee functions like most cliques...they play favorites and Knopfler isn't likely to be on anyone's list. Its not like a knighthood where willingness to accept gets you in. There are plenty of acts who would love the recognition, but it will never happen if there aren't enough committee members pulling for you.
