what is HYSYMB? I'm really lost on this one.
Bottom line- is this movie as good or better sound wise, performance wise, and picture wise as AT THE MAX or LETS SPEND THE NITE TOGETHER. I have obviously excluded Gimme Shelter and Ladies and Gentleman( and no I am not asking for another Wood vs Taylor debate) because these fell into the golden period from 1968 thru 1972 and they can not top themselves at this point.

Well, this is only my opinion, but from the perspective of cinematography alone - it blows the others you mention out of the water. Performance wise - that VERY much depends on your point of view. Personally, I'll take it for what it is, the Rolling Stones sounding as they do in 2006. They don't sound quite the same obviously as they did when AT THE MAX or LETS SPEND THE NITE TOGETHER were shot/recorded. If you're of the belief (as I am) that there simply does not exist a better version of JJF than the one on Ya Yas, then the version they open with on Shine A Light I didn't think was "better" obviously. It's perfectly OK, but it would be fair to say that it's merely representative of how they sounded performing it throughout the entire ABB tour 2005 through 2007. But the concert mostly consists of "different" songs to those other films, and the combination of the joy in seeing/hearing them perform some of those gems with the added benefit of Scorcese's unquestionable brilliance cinematographically, I'd say Shine A light probably comes out ahead on balance. Having said that, in as much as I think JJF has NEVER been improved on since Ya Yas, I'm ALSO of ther belief that Under My Thumb has NEVER been improved upon since 1981/1982 for example, and you will of course recall that the song opens LETS SPEND THE NITE TOGETHER and is the first track on the Still Life live album. So ......... it's all very subjective really !! I think there's brilliance all throughout their career, and some things had their moment way back when, others had theirs in 2006. Go see it, you be the judge. You ain't got long to wait !!

at a couple of points in my life, so i don't tolerate certain "film people behaviours" very well.

know what you mean there, having just tried to watch the There Will Be Blood press conference, also available on the Berlinale web page. More ego in one of DD-L's or PT-A's responses than in the whole session with the Stones & Scorsese.

yes, I do agree JJF from YA YAS is the best. Visaully I found LSTNT very good, but the sound was kind of muddy. I always thought the versions of songs from Hampton were much better than anything in that movie.

Thank you all very much for your wonderful reviews.

PS: I loved this, with sssoul - "but after all is said & done: the film is full of splendidly beautiful moments and was clearly made with great affection, and the Stones all shine shine shine "

Well, have I been sleeping ? I see no final complete setlist for the whole movie , exept that it starts with JJF and they also play Satisfaction and fade out with Shine a Light and the entire movie is in black & white ? eye popping smiley

>> Well, have I been sleeping ? <<

seems that way! no, it isn't all black & white.
Gazza's re-posted the complete setlist for the concert part of the film on page 19 of this thread.
there are a couple of other numbers/fragments in the film as well, but the setlist per se is there.

Thanks everyone for these great reviews and sharing all your thoughts and experiences in this thread.

Is the butchering of Connection as fierce as the butchering of Rocks Off on Live Licks? I will brace myself when the moment arrives, so thanks for warning me.

I understood the Stones themselves did not stay to watch the movie?

In the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad (NRC review) they had a nice review, concluding that The Stones are "hors concours" and no movie star can ever compete with them when it comes to adoration by fans.
The only critical note of the author of the review is that the movie does not shed a light on the secret what actually makes the Stones so immens popular nor why Scorsese is such a life long big fan. But then the author comes to the conclusion that maybe the quintessence of the band is nothing more or nothing less than the sheer power of their live performance. And Scorsese managed to capture this power, according to the journalist (Dana Linsen).

and i finally got the press conference to play! say hallelujah :E
someone several pages ago was finding it funny that Keith thinks they played the Beacon three nights -
it's pretty obvious (isn't it?!) that he's referring to the two shows plus their rehearsals there.

>> Is the butchering of Connection as fierce as the butchering of Rocks Off on Live Licks? <<

i don't mean to keep harping on this, i truly don't. but since you ask ... let's put it this way:
when the dvd comes out i will edit what's left of Connection out of it -
unimaginable as it is to me to even think of ever choosing to skip part of Keith's set.
it's not an "edit". the start of the number is missing, then it's chopped off.
then chopped again. then chopped again. the bits that are left sound great.
what's intruded in between the bits is from that 1999 Chris Evans interview -
including (unbelievably!) snippets of a concert rendition of another number (Brown Sugar, if memory serves).
i love that Chris Evans interview - but not in the middle of Connection! ow ow ow

and unaccustomed as i am to bitching in public, i need to add something positive here ...
let me think ... ah okay, here's one: She Was Hot made me hugely happy -
i turned to open-g and said: "they understood that it's a GUITAR band!" :E

Yep indeed, totally agree. I singled that song out also as just being totally tremendous for guitars, they were simply divine on that.

Yep let's focus on the highlights (everybody made it perfectly clear that this movie is a must see) so I can't wait to see for myself.

Now, back to the question: did the Stones indeed leave the festival BEFORE the movie was played? Why on earth would they do that?

Re: Shine a Light - The Movie

... because they've seen it before, and had cooler things to do than watch themselves again?

i don't know when they left, so i'm just guessing, of course.

maybe they left early because they had seen the same songs over and over again in their other concert movies and dvds.
uh-oh...just kidding...really...

There are LOADS, but please look this thread up in a few weeks/months time (if it's no longer on page 1 of this message board by then) and tell me whether you don't agree with me and think that "Champagne and Reefer" wasn't THE highlight, I mean THE THE THE THE absolute total highlight musically and visually ?

But others (no less in their own right) ... As Tears Go By, Some Girls, Far Away Eyes, and Just My Imagination. and for sheer "duelling/weaving GITAR heaven" - She Was Hot !!

Compare notes in a few weeks (or whenever you see it) ..................

Was there any talk in Berlin of showing SAL on Imax ?

Sorry if this was posted before but I didn't read too much as I want to see the film without knowing everything already!

From what I read seems like Scorses missed a great chance to do something really surprising . .

Even if he had made 10 versions of SAL - there's bound to be someone who would say just that about your personal favorite.

Brown Sugar was not played the first night. It was on the setlist, but did not get played due to Mick's throat.

OK, I have some questions thats already maybe been answered on this long thread. The set list on the movie is missing "im free" and "shine a ligth"? as well as "connection" butchered. I heard SAL is outro and its original EOMS version? What other songs are missing from this show? Any hope they will all be on a Japanese disc?

The Stones played 24 different songs over the two nights. 19 songs on the first night, with 4 songs being dropped for the 2nd show and replaced with 5 songs, making a 20 song set.

Songs played on night 1 only (4): Undercover, Shine A Light, Little T & A, Paint it Black

Songs played on night 2 only (5): Some Girls, Far Away Eyes, Connection, Honky Tonk Women, Satisfaction

Songs played both nights (15)Jumpin' Jack Flash, Shattered, She was hot, All down the line, Loving cup, As tears Go by,Just My Imagination, Champagne & Reefer, Tumbling Dice, You Got The Silver, Sympathy, Live With Me, Start Me Up, Brown Sugar, I'm Free

Songs in the film (19) Jumpin' Jack Flash, Shattered, She was hot, All down the line, Loving cup, As tears Go by, Some Girls,Just My Imagination, Far Away Eyes, Champagne & Reefer, Tumbling Dice, You Got The Silver, Connection, Sympathy, Live With Me, Start Me Up, Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, Shine A Light

Therefore, in the film we know that Shine A Light comes from the first show (29/11/06) and Some Girls, Far Away Eyes, Connection and Satisfaction come from the second show (1/11/06), We still dont know which show was used for the remaining 14 songs as they were played both nights.

I'm Free is the only song played at BOTH shows which isn't in the film. The other unused songs are Undercover, Little T&A, Paint It Black (from night 1) and Honky Tonk Women (from night 2)

thanks for the correction. I threw that together pretty fast and wasnt surprised there was an oversight or two.

So thats 13 songs we arent sure what night was used, as 1 of the one-off songs comes from night 1 and 5 are from night 2

Wouldnt put any faith in that. How can anyone accurately predict a release date for the DVD of a movie which wont even be released in cinemas for another two months?

Guesswork at best, although in fairness he probably wont be THAT far off the mark as its unlikely to have anything more than a limited run.

For what it's worth, I believe we can assume that JJF is from the 2nd night as this is what they opened with(1st night was SMU), from the trailer we can see Mick coming from behind Charlie, I guess they could have re-shot it, but my guess would be that most if not all coverage is from the 2nd night. I was not at the first show, but was at the 2nd show and from what I have heard and read from those at both shows, the 2nd was significantly better. Wherever it's from, I will be greatful to see it and to purchase the audio and dvd when they come out.

i like the set list for the movie.

its very diverse.

she was hot, loving cup, as tears go by, some girls, far away eyes, you got the silver, connection and shine a light are songs that havent been featured much on live dvd,s or cd,s.

and the warhorses have been reduced more than other dvd,s and cd,s.

i would have considered having 3 or 4 songs from the bigger bang album and also would have included love is strong, i go wild, and anybody seen my baby.

Now look, why do you have to be so difficult ? You think having PLAYED the friggin' song is a pre-requisite for its inclusion in the movie ? What nonsense ! This is fiction, this is make believe, this is the movies ... it wasn't even THEM in the bloody film anyway, it was some other lot just PRETENDING to be them.

I'm still a little upset that I didn't make it onto the movie. I had secretly hoped that Paulywaul was going to come back and say "there's a great shot of Cindy at the stage dancing in front of Mick Jagger'. But I guess, I'll just have to try again the next time Scorcese films a movie about the Rolling Stones.
