Over the years I've seen most of the usual contenders for 'the loudest' title- Blue Cheer, MC5, Stooges, The Who, The Clash, Ramones, Motorhead..........but the hands down surprise winner was Tangerine Dream. Perhaps the venue size contributed to the effect. I saw them in a small theater in the mid-70s and my ears were ringing for literally three days afterward.
Keith Richards brought his big equipment for a small room when I saw him recording his wttw soundstage show in Chicago. We were all much too close to the big speakers. It was great.
Motorhead - Glasgow Apollo - June 83. My first ever concert. I was 12 and had school the next day. Couldnt hear a bloody thing for a week. I thought I was "Deaf forever".
I never thought I'd complain of a show being too loud but at Buddy Guy's Legends last week....I was shocked. My ears would tremble and it felt like my brain was shaking...my teeth rattled. I was getting nauseous. I had to put tissues in my ears to go on watching the show. I've never went through anything like it.
KISS reunion tour in 96 Vancouver. Very loud but not distorted.
Also Van Halen last month in Vancouver. I didn't think it was too loud but when I got home and went to bed and rested my head on my pillow, my ears were ringing!
Most of the hard rock bands I've seen put on loud concerts: AC/DC, Priest, Maiden, Scorpions, Motorhead, Aerosmith, Motley, etc.
loudest concert as a whole-Black Sabbath dallas 1978. Loudest SONG- Stones Oklahoma City 1999-Get Off My Cloud. I was on front row of lower balcony Keiths side and B stage PA speakers were pointed straight down at me. The first two songs were ok but when they went to Cloud the treble actually made me lose my balance!!
#1- constantines ( a small canadian band.. at Lees Palace in Toronto) stood behind the sound guy thinking it would sound great... after about 10 minutes it felt like i was being smashed in the ear drum with a fine tipped hammer
#2- aerosmith 1994- skydome toronto my first real big rock concert so im sure it seemed louder than it really was... but i recall being 13 and my ears ringing for about two days afterwards
#3- tool- 2007 (hamilton) brutally loud in the copps colliseum... that building amplifies the sound of the bass so much too... i had ear plugs in the whole time and still left with ringing ears
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in 2004 or 2005, can't remember. It was Paradiso, Amsterdam. After the gig there was this constant beep in my ears for about a week or so.

I've gotten nauseous too! Never moreso than when CCR played the UGA Coliseum. They did it as a 3 piece and tried to make up for the missing guitar with volume. It was so loud and distorted that you literally could not hear anything!! Just an obnoxious roar. And who would have expected that from them??
Journey......can't remember the year but they were opening for ELP at the Oakland Indoor Coliseum Arena. We were on the side by the stage in front of a huge bank of speakers. Even putting my fingers in my ear couldn't ease the pain.
