Bands playing complete albums

A number of bands have been playing complete albums at their gigs over the last few yers. Just read that Sparks have set up a number of back to back dates in London where they will play every album they have made. Each gig features one album plus their latest offering. Would love to hear them play A Woofer In Tweeters Clothing - very brave move by the band. We can only dream of the stones doing something like that

Isn´t kind of boring when you know which songs they´re going to play and when? Part of going to a concert, for me anyway, is the surprise factor.

I think this only really works with concept albums like dark side of the moon otherwise there will be too many peaks and troughs depending on our individual preferences

I saw Lou Reed playing Berlin last year, and it was great - despite completely lacking in surprise. Once you got over the fact that you knew what the next songs were going to be, you could revel in the new arrangements etc, etc.

Generally, if it isn't done well it's pretty boring. I saw Bowie at the Royal Festival Hall, where he played the whole of Low (non sequentially) followed by the whole of Heathen (sequentially). Yes, it was a fairly intimate venue by Bowie standards, but the gig was a fairly clinical experience, when all's said and done.

A couple of years later I saw The Stooges doing Funhouse at the Hammersmith Apollo. Terrific gig.

The only advantage to these kind of shows is that you can time your beer and piss breaks during your least favourite songs.

a 'Dirty Work' concept show, would be one long piss/beer break.

Well, there isn't much of a surprise factor on Stones concerts nowadays, is there? Just think of the European tour last summer. And besides, I think playing complete albums live is brilliant, it would work with many Stones albums and most of them are not exactly what one would consider a concept album.

I saw The Good The Bad And The Queen playing their whole album in its entirety and in order and I loved it!

A Dirty Work show would be unmissable in my opinion

At least they would play a show with 10 songs not played in about 20 years. Sadly they can't play that album anymore, the guitar party is gone, if they had problems with One Hit in 1989 when the band was playing 500% better than now, imagine a version of One Hit in 2008, full of keyboards, horns and with Blondie working his ass off to fill the blanks.

i've seen some good ones,

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque x 2
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff
Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Brian Wilson - Pet Sounds x 3

The yoof, mudhoney & B&S were mixed success's but TFC and Brian Wilson BRILLIANT.

I sort of like the idea......and the fact that the band plays the entire album, doesn't necessarily mean they won't play some other songs before and/or after.

I'm only aware of a few.......the previously mentioned Brian Wilson (Pet Sounds)...also REO Speedwagon (Hi Infidelity)....Elton John '75 (Captain Fantasitic)...Pink Floyd members (Dark Side of The Moon)....

It's a good chance to see live performances of lesser played ("deeper") tracks.

BTW the Elton "Capt Fantastic" show was the 2nd disk of a CF re-issue. Another unique fact (I think) is that...unlike performers that do it 10, 20 or 30 yrs after the album has been declared a "classic"....Elton did it before it's original release in 1975....must've known it was gonna be a good one.

He did it again in 2005. [en.wikipedia.org]

IORR............but I like it!

metallica played the whole MASTER OF PUPPETS 1 or 2 years ago (it was the 20th anniversary of the album)

Brian Wilson played the entire pet sounds album but opened and closed with a string of hits and other songs. It would be cool if the stones did something like this. like played say all of let it bleed then closed with jjf bs htw and satisfaction. or something like that.

well actually beggars banquet sticky or exile would be better since theyve played everyhting off LIB already.

The Some Girls tour of 78 was pretty much the entire album, with the exception of the song "Some Girls and Before They Make Me Run."

That was a great tour I never saw, but have lived through vicariously thanks to the magic of bootlegging.

Springsteen pretty much played the whole of Seeger Sessions on the first leg of that tour. In fact he only did two or three oldies - and those rearranged Waltons-style. Result? The tour bombed in the US (did great business in Europe though).

Nick Cave's Abattoir Blues tour had him playing the bulk of the album for the first hour, then the final twenty minutes devoted to old songs. Great album, but very boring to stand through.

It would be a much bigger surprise if the Stones did a while album compared to their predictable set lists they do today... When I saw CSNY last summer they did all of Neil's new album, not in the same exact order, so it wasn't like you knew what the next song would be. It was great.

This also worked great when the Dead were touring behind Blues for Allah.. I just don't think the Stones would ever do it, especially with a new album since Mick doesn't seem to like playing new songs, he pretty much apologized for having to play a new tune when I saw them in 2005.

The Black Crowes have announced a series of special one-off gigs to support their forthcoming album.

'Warpaint' -- their first studio album in seven years -- is due out on March 4. To mark the album's release, the band are playing gigs across the US that will feature their new album in its entirety.

When I saw the Stones in 78 they did every song except 'Lies'.

Cheap Trick played a series of shows on consectutive nights at the House of Blues on Sunset, where they played a different studio album in it's entirety on each of the nights that week. It went over tremendously; they were all sell outs and very hard to get tickets...very well reviewed...
(* That's Cheap Trick rocking out the theme of the Colbert Report each night)

I just recalled seeing Teenage Fanclub at the Astoria last year, the came out and did their new album start to finish and follwoed with most of their singles in chronological order. a brave thing to do with an new album, they just about pulled it off, the run of well know singles satsisfied and disgruntled part time fans.

This past September Lucinda Williams played all of her albums, each one on a different night during a stand in LA and then again in NYC. She'd play the album, take a break and then come back and play some other songs.....and she made the recordings of each "album" set available later that same night for those wanting to stick around and buy them. It was very well received....a really gracious gesture on her part.

Elvis Costello just recently did this at a couple of benefit shows in San Francisco. Playing all of his first album My Aim Is True. Plus other songs as well, since the songs are so short.

I also saw YES play Tales from Topographic Oceans start to finish. That was a tough one but the drugs got me through that show.

Genesis play Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from beginning to end

Jethro Tull Thick as a Brick and Passion Play

They regularly played 8 out of the 10 Some Girls songs on that tour. The only two that were excluded were Some Girls (not played until 1999) and Before They make Me Run (debuted 1989).

The Cowboy Junkies re-did their "Trinity Session" and called it "Trinity Rvisited"
and last year Fairport Convention played their "Liege And Lief" Lp at the annual Cropredy festival with nearly the original line-up
