i'm trying to help someone with a piece of writing about early Stones history,
and i'm looking for documentation of a couple of events in march/april/may 1963.
one of them is Norman Jopling's visit to the Crawdaddy Club, which resulted in .. well, in a lot of things.

Mark Paytress's book Off the Record includes excerpts from an article Jopling wrote about the Stones
that appeared in the may 11th 1963 Record Mirror. does anyone here happen to have the full article,
and/or know where one might be able to have a look at issues of Record Mirror from april through may 4th 1963?
better yet: does anyone know if Norman Jopling is still around & contactable?

Does anybody know if the Jopling piece was used in Roy Car's late 70s illustrated chronology? Mine was stolen around 5 years ago by one of my very good and loyal friends.

i've seen alot of old pics of the stones but it still amazes me when i see how young the looked in those days . they look like teenagers

Yes, the article as it appears above is also in Roy Carr's book,page 10 to be precise!

the article above isn't the Jopling piece, though - it's by Barry May.
the may 11th Jopling article was in Record Mirror.

Oops, sorry I was in a hurry when I wrote this; so the Jopling article does not seem to be in Roy Carr's book, only the one by Barry May.

a related question i'm hoping someone here may be able to help with, or know who to ask:
thanks to an amazingly intrepid and glamourous researcher, i now know that the dateline
on 1963 issues of Record Mirror read: "week ending [saturday date, eg 11 may]" and also "thursday".
our best guess right now is that thursday was probably the distribution day - the day it hit the newsstands -
but which thursday would that be, relative to the saturday mentioned in the "week ending" part?
that is: would the Record Mirror for the week ending saturday 11 may have come out on thursday 09 may?
or on thursday 16 may? (the latter idea seems tres weird to me - but a lot of things in this world seem tres weird to me,
so i'd rather ask if someone remembers how it was, or knows someone who would remember.)

(Record Mirror doesn't exist anymore so i can't ask them; i have asked the current copyright owners but they don't know.)

yet another question is what sort of lead time a weekly normally had in 1963 -
how long before distribution was an issue sent to the printers?
monthlies in those days had pretty long lead times - the december issue for example
would tell you what had been going on in october - and it probably came out in early december or late november,
not weeks ahead of the stated date like monthlies now do. but i don't know what the situation was
with UK weeklies in 1963 - any insights would be very very gratefully received!

I remember it (reasonably) well. In fact I'm currently penning my Record Mirror memoirs and have now documented that episode. But it IS confusing. Is anybody out there still interested?

and yes i am indeed deeply interested in your recollections of that historic event -
as noted above, in the published accounts Peter Jones and Andrew Oldham recall it differently,
so your input would help hugely in de-confusing the historical record. was it you who persuaded Peter Jones
that that handful of skinny r&b'ers was worth writing about, even though they hadn't made a record yet?
and when/where did you first see them, and when did you do the interview(s) for the article?

and so on! whatever you feel like relating will be very very gratefully received

did it appear on the newsstands on the Thursday prior to "the week ending Saturday May 11th" (or whatever Saturday)?
and what day did a given issue normally go to the printers? and so on.

Wow! Quick response. I was taking some time out from a big writing job with an ASAP deadline, idly checking out myself on Yahoo! (which I'd never actually done before), when I came across this post - which interests me too, a lot, for reasons I'll explain when I get time to (a) read all the posts (b) collate my info - which I hope will help. Sorry not to be able to do it straightaway, but I might as well do it properly. But here's a couple of background things: New Record Mirror (as it was then; it changed back to Record Mirror that November) was printed in High Wycombe. I used to go up on the Monday night, or Tuesday morning, put the paper to bed, and it was delivered to Shaftesbury Avenue and distributed on the Wednesday before publication date - so we were first on the streets, especially the West End. Our circulation was rocketing at that time. Editor was Jimmy Watson, Peter Jones was an in-demand freelance based at Record Mirror. I was 19! What a job! Talk soon...

so the New Record Mirror in which your historic piece on the Stones appeared was put to bed
on May 6th or 7th - a very eventful week for the fledgling Stones! (it was May 6th that they signed with ALO,
and the 10th that they recorded their first single). so was it on Sunday May 5th that you took Dezo Hoffman
down to the Crawdaddy to take the photo for the article, or had that been done earlier?
i mean: had your article been waiting a bit before it ran? it reads partly as if it had been written
before ALO arrived on the scene - but then again, you mention that they were hoping to record Come On,
so ... so maybe i should shut up, stop speculating and let you tell it!
