Larry Knechtel's solo in Bread's "The Guitar Man" always made me think of Stephen. The lyrics, too. Give it a spin if it's in your collection.

The strings at the end of that song always reminded me of music from a James Bond film.

Best wishes to Stephen. There's one guy who has been there and back. And back again. Long may you run...

There was a story about a rock star (unnamed) who was thrown out from backstage for some sort of bad behavior at an L.A.show that was told in STP, the book about the '72 tour. Most people think that guy was Stills.

Five years later he was hanging out with Mick during the mixing of Love You Live, so it wasn't a permanent thing.

I also read somewhere that Stills loaned his stage lighting--and perhaps his P.A.--that he was touring with for The Concert for Bangla Desh. Then he was mighty hurt that no one asked him to play that show!

I guess Stephen had an ego as big as his talent. Tough for a guy to be so famous so young, and doing all that growing up in public.

well, hanging out with one Glimmer Twin doesn't necessarily mean the other one had changed his views -
in All the Rage Mac relates a story from 1978 that sounds like Keith was still pretty unentranced.

all kinds of well-being on him anyway, of course

Everyone knows the story about Stills having auditioned to be in The Monkees, but did you know that Jimi Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell wanted him to be the bass player in the Experience?

What really shitty news !! Hope they caught it in time.... Let's not forget about the Buffalo Springfield and that Stills is the writer and voice in one of the greatest songs ever written - "FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH" ("Something happenin' here/what it is ain't exactly clear..." - threw that in for the kids that were born in the 90's). What a great musician and singer he is. I remember now (haven't thought about this for decades) how I stumbled upon him playing baseball/softball at some park in West LA, might have been a charity thing but there weren't many people there. I just remember how small he was (short, not much of a belly yet) but you always notice that with musicians and actors - shorter/smaller than you thought they would be. Didn't say anything to him (I never do after an Alice Cooper "incident" when I was very young and shitfaced) but a few other fans did and he was super cool and nice, a very down to earth dude from my experience that day. Great songs, great voice, great musician - hope another one doesn't bite the dust, we're loosing all the good ones.... How about if God takes 5 politicians instead and leaves Stephen here? I 'll take that deal....

Hey Skelter - I was there in the 60's. Hollywood when the kids were in the streets protesting the closing of a little nightclub called: Pandora's Box

The Flower Children turned into Hippies and started getting into it with the cops. Steve was there and saw all this unfold and wrote the song: For What It's Worth... Been one of my favorites ever since it came out. Just listen to the works. There's a man with a gun over there, telling me I got to beware..

The kids worked the cops over pretty good that night. Throwing bottles of piss,
black widows in bottles,etc.. at the cops as they rode down Sunset Blvd. on
their motorcycles.. what a night!!

Thanks for the Backround info MCDDTLC, very lucky to have been in the middle of such a historical event and time(I've seen a bit of footage - black and white - of that event I think). I remember the period well, all the flower children/hippies on Sunset Blvd. in the late 60's but was a few years too young to really be involved totally, watched and cheered for the good guys (the youth that wanted change and the war to end) from the side lines. Eventually got to join a big march with Jane Fonda in 72 in San Francisco but by then it was just a matter of time, I think KENT STATE flipped out a lot of straight/conservative adults seeing Americans kill innocent Americans...seems to have come around again.....

MCDDTLC, one of the great things about FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH is that it's been played by so many different performers/bands in concert whenever there's trouble - when the Bastards try to start some trouble somewhere with some bombs or whatever... I agree, a GREAT SONG, up there with some Dylan work that's used a lot in difficult times.... Thanks again, always great historical stories told on IORR....

Hopefully he's cught it early enough. If so it's VERY treatable and Stephen can continue to make some great music. Best of luck and God's speed.

In his new Exile book Greenfield tells the story again and this time says it's been Stills!
The story had been told before various times but only guessing the name.

Keith had thrown Stills out of his place (hotel?) after he had been beggin for more coke and making trouble.

After that he sat fuming in his car outside the hotel with a big knife and theated to go back stabing Keith.

(I've always been wondering about all this cause I always thought they would have been good friends. Like they rehearsed in his house and Stills even played with them live in Amsterdam in 1970. I've been there but to tell the truth in those days I didn't recognize him. He played the piano.)
But with drugs things can change in a minute!

Unfortunately, it's the ONLY Springfield song Stills ever plays live. It'd be great to see him do some of the others, like Rock And Roll Woman or Bluebird. By the way, the Buffalo Springfield box set is AMAZING. It's pretty much everything they ever put down on tape. Some VERY cool stuff in there for Neil fans, too.

So much for the myth of the peaceful hippie. Have you ever seen the film Celebration At Big Sur? During CSNY's performance, a heckler confronts them about getting rich while espousing hippie ideals .... and Stills beats the crap outta the guy! He may have worn long hair, sideburns, and a fringed jacket, but Stills was still Punk.

That box kind of annoys me, because it ALMOST contains everything released by them. They only put out three albums, so they get them in there in stereo and mono versions--but then they didn't include the long version of "Bluebird" that appeared on the 2-LP anthology called "Buffalo Springfield" released in the early '70s, or the popular version of "On the Way Home" from "Last Time Around" (that Neil had a problem with because they overdubbed horns--really good horns in fact--after he left the group)

They were a great band.

Stephen's live versions of "For What It's Worth" have long strayed from the economy of the original arrangement...turning into a drawn-out sing-a-long at times. When Stills performed it at the CSNY show last year, Neil added the ringing guitar licks from the record and sort of pulled it back to the sound of the Springfield version.

Okay, maybe not a Hippie-Punk. Maybe more like a Hippie-Gangsta!

Yeah, it's hard to believe that in a 4-CD box set for a band that only released three LPs, they couldn't find room for the legendary nine-minute version of Bluebird. Still, there's all kinds of revelatory material in this set, like Neil's 1966 demo "Down Down Down", which is basically an early version, with very different lyrics, of what in 1970 became "Country Girl" on the Deja Vu album.

I don't know that film. Was it a cinema movie? Who else played in it?
Perhaps it wasn't shown In Europe/ Germany . .?

Yeah. It was from around the same time as Woodstock and Gimmie Shelter. I saw a midnight screening of it in a theatre in the late 70s. Haven't seen it since so I don't remember a lot about it. I know Joni Mitchell is in it but can't remember who else.

His Manassas album has often been compared to Exile On Main Street because of it's freewheeling trip through various American music styles - from rock, to country, Cuban to classic songsmithery of the highest order. Anyone who hasn't heard and loves The Stones is in for a real thrill. Side two, on the old vinyl, is very similar to side two of Exile. And Bill Wyman's rumoured to have played bass on it though he couldn't be credited. Sorry to hear of his ilnness. Good luck Stephen.

____ i have never seen the film your speaking of, but i was at esalen institute, big sur (c.1969) when they played.. incrediable weekend, hardly anyone there.... and there was a 'heckler' who began walking around the pool towards the band.. and a hells angel very smoothly tripped him up and put an end to the flipped out none-sense. it was impressive,, once again the angeles were security... thats what i remember.
if any of ya find yourself travelin down hwy 1 from sur, stop off at the institute and enjoy there baths perch'd on the edge of the planet.....

From what it sounds like, Ol' Buffalo Nose's cancer is very treatable. I would love to see CSN&Y (the Y is a must) again, but it's every lesbian's favorite Surrogate Father I'm worried about...and what a father figure he is!

He had the surgery yesterday. His wife was quoted as saying it went remarkably well. CSNY/Deja Vu, a documentary of their 2006 tour, directed by Neil Young, premiers at the Sundance Film Festival January 25.
