I like what Barn Owl said... My choices would match a lot of those, esp. Hunky Dory... And LA FORUM!... Suzanne V is playing where I live in Maine on Dec. 9th... been putting off getting tix, but maybe I'll get my butt in gear and go purchase!!

I'd include in my album list:

Cannonball Adderly 'Best Of: Capitol Years'
Grant Green 'Aint It Funky Now'
Elvis Costello 'Imperial Bedroom'
U2 'Unforgettable Fire'

among others...

really I can't remember any but two

The Police's Synchronicity....when it came out I was struck by how intelligent it was....also remember the times were greatly informed by the Orwellian concepts of 1984.

Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction....so raw, so rocking, so sleazy and slightly dangerous....a welcome back to blues bases balls out rock.

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

I took a look again two later at my list of ten albums that started this thread (mostly albums from the 60s/early 70s), and realized that it would have looked slightly different at various parts of my life later on.

From 1977-1980 I was working on my music degree from Berklee College of Music, and mentioned somewhere would have been at least two of the following:

Gino Vannelli - Storm at Sunup
Steely Dan - The Royal Scam or Aja
Miles Davis - Almost Blue
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire

But, once I finished Berklee and revisited my rock and roll roots, the list could have included:

Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
The Police - Synchronicity
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp

For what it's worth, of albums of the past few years, I've been quite partial to:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Green Day - American Idiot
Anything by Los Lobos

Great topic Mongoose. Being 50, I all to well remember the days of vinyl & cool album art. Roxy Music Country Life was one of those I bought for the cover art and was blown away by the music. Saturn, glad you mentioned Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow, what a marvelous record. I was also a big Tull fan from 1971-1978, so I guess I should put "Honorable Mention" nominations for Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, and Living in the Past.

Loved Alice Cooper in the early days, especially the Killer album.

Blind Faith is an album where I remember I was in the 9th grade in Virginia, and we had an unexpected snow day from school. Took a jar of change that I had somewhere in the house and walked over to the J.C. Penney's store in the winter weather to purchase that record for about five bucks, I guess. Took it home and just sat listening to it all day long. Funny how those memories stick with you, y'know?

All of the above are from the late 60's and early 70's. There was a time (when drugs, alcohol, and women) just about ruined a lot of the bands above. ( Me too)I allways liked Neil Young,B B King, Savoy Brown, Early Fleetwood Mac, etc.,) Around 74-75, I got into a lot of Country and Blues Music. (Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Sr and Jr, George Jones, Jimmy Rogers, Johnny Paycheck, Johnny Winter,Albert King,Muddy Waters,(check out Electric Mud if you get a chance),Buddy Guy,Freddie King, etc.) I was also into a lot of George Dickel and other substances at this time. DISCO SUCKED, The Rolling Stones sucked ( untill Some Girls),The Eagles sucked, Fleetwood Mac sucked. Now I listen to John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Uncle Tupelo, Travis Twitt, etc, but I allways go back to the mid to late 60's- early 70's blues rock. Oh, by the way,Greg Allman-Searching For Simplicity is a great album.

Not necessarily my favorite albums, but the 10 that "took my breath away" when I first heard them, albums which were positively stunning on first listen. Some of them faded with repeated listenings, but just completely blew me away when I first put needle to vinyl (or, laser to polymer, as the case may be).

Astral weeks - Van Morrison
Live At The Harlem Square Club-Sam Cooke
Gris Gris-Dr John
Niandra Lades & usually Just A T-Shirt - John Frusciante
4 Track Demos - PJ Harvey
Lifehouse Demos - Pete Townshend
Kid A - Radiohead
Roast Fish Collie Weed & Cornbread - Lee Perry
I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You - Aretha Franklin
There's A Riot Goin' On - Sly & The Family Stone

Most of my top ten have already been listed, but there's one particular bootleg that I got when I was 18: it opens up with a pseudo-announcer talking about modern recordings "...in today's brilliant stereo, with sound as clear as the stars in the eyes of the girl you're dancing with...so, let's just listen..." and then, there's the opening riffs from the Wembley 1973 "Gimme Shelter". The LP, of course, was "Bedspring Symphony". That was a true OMG! moment for me.
