must have been ages for me, but hurray to YouTube nearly everything is instantly availlable, warts and all.
lousy picture quality, ratty lo-fi sound - but a good song is a good song, like this one.
great story in those lyrics, nice instrumentation and harmonies...and Rod's voice.

Only a few days ago Rod was interviewed on Australian TV show Enough Rope
With Andrew Denton...When the subject of Maggie May crops up Rod stated
that it nearly didn't make it on the record because it didn't have a sing-a-long chorus...

Aw yeah he also said Maggie was his first shag....

phew, close - amazing how far off he was.....nearly.
on this live vid, the audience does a friggin' solo at the beginning

gawd Australia must be the only place not to have heard the "no chorus" and "first shag story" . did he say how it was originally the b-side to Tim Hardins "reason to believe" aside from not having a chorus its was deemed to long for an a-side. the mandolin by the way is yer man from Lindisfarne.
Also wasn't it (along with its album "Every Picture Tells A Story" the first album and single to top the charts both sides of the atlantic at the same time ??

Just heard the song 3 min ago and was in the middle of Memphis Tennessee (was that enough n's and e's, sorry spell). Then decided to check IORR.

Bought this DVD in Thailand with around 20 OLD Stewart Faces songs. Nothing new there I th*nk. Just a great collections of songs we love.
Give me 15 minutes to write down all the songs in case anything rare there. Starts with "Three button hand me down".

I agree that Faces box set version rocks hard and is played with such confidence and power that I could absolutely dig it after having OD'd on Rod's solo hit years ago...Ronnie Lane's basslines, the guitar crunch, and Jones as opposed to Mick Waller - one track that illustrates the differences between and strengths of both solo Rod (69 - 75) and Faces

Another song from 1971 that blew everybody away. "All you did was wreck my bed...", was a HUGE deal back then! Just brilliant, that summer of music. 1972 was Zep's year w/Stairway. Tumblin Dice, when compared to Brown Sugar was a piece of shite.

Led Zep, in my recollections, took off slower with the 4th album (charted 11/27/71) than instant smash II, which established LZ as a very huge band, & contained their biggest single. Zep didn't get much press in 72 and I dont recall them touring near me. The Stones owned 1972, rock zines devoted whole issues to them and they made the covers of scores of publications from Sat'day Review to Life. Constant talk about ticket lotteries and colorful events such as busts at airports to bombs planted in equipment trucks were reported constantly/. With Houses in '73 the vast 'younger sibling' audience truly embraced Zep as their own, more than the previous era's icons (Stones/Dylan and so forth). In terms of Zep's superstardom that seemed to me the next album to gain a vast young audience after II...Stairway really gained its warhorse status a year or two after its release, & then it seemed you couldn't get around it on FM radio...and finally, a perrenial seller, IV became their biggest album .

The part I always like about that song is after the solo when the drums bring the band back into the main riff!

John R., you're right about the Stones owing the zines that fateful summer. It's just that Zep had a stronger single. The Stones were big because of Altamont and all the straight writers were sent on tour to see if any blood was spilled, methinks!
