Great to see some of Philip Townsend's photos in this thread! I've bought 12 of his photos through the years, and this is one of the great shots on ny living room walls. And Mr. Townsend's a great guy and still a good friend of the boys.

thanks for those beautiful shots, Gypsy! the Department of Historical Accuracy just wants to note
that the Rollin' Stones were the support act, not the back-up for Long John Baldry (Baldry had his own band)

Speaking of Philip Townsend! Before the Stones convention in London in August, I spoke with him on the phone, asking if he was going to the convention and if it would be possible to buy some of the fabulous black and white shots he's taken of the Stones - especially in the early days. His answer: Oh, I should think so! I only took 5 or 6 frames in colour way back, and they've all faded, so yes, I will bring the black and white photos.
Great guy and a brilliant photographer. Wish I had a scanner so I could share some more of his photos with you guys. (I'll definitely buy one soon.)

>> Mad Mod Ball - 8 April 1964 <<

interesting shot, Rockman! Keith's dressed differently in it than in those colour photos -
are these really all from the same event, i wonder??
four numbers seems like a mighty short set for Keith to be changing his frock

with sssoul.....Listed as 8 April 1964..
Maybe Keith shed the jacket between numbers.....

thanks Rockman honey - i believe you that that's how the shot's listed, but i'm wondering
if all these photos are really the same event. here's another one i've got
that's labelled as the same Mod Ball, but ... [scratching head] ... what do you think?
this might be the view from the other side of the photo you posted, but does it look like the same scene as those colour shots??

I 'think' I have seen those colour pics you posted as possibly credited as being somewhere else!? Don't ask me where!:-()

The previous two photos posted here certainly look like the same event to me.

right - but not the same event as the two colour ones, right?
the colour ones look more like the stage-on-wheels situation James Phelge describes - but what do i know.
here's one more - maybe this one's a sort of Missing Link, or maybe it just confuses everything further:

nice - thank you Gypsy & HM! and at the same time: curiouser & curiouser -
in that first one both Keith and Brian are dressed differently than in the others
(not overlooking Bill's scarf!) ... they were playing a lot of shows very close together in those days ...
Mick, Charlie & Bill are dressed that same way at the NME Pollwinners Contest on april 26th as well.
in other words it seems to me like some of these must be misdated/misidentified, and no wonder.

Does anyone have photos of the Stones photosession where they're doing a parody on the court case against Mick and Keith? Wigs and all? It's really funny stuff.

They are both Daily Mirror Archives and interestingly, the first photo is credited as being from the mod ball.

The Rolling Stones Files/Daily Mirror book says it was taken whilst the stones took a break from the rehearsals for that event. It also says the mod ball was televised...

So perhaps the various pics attributed to the mod ball are a mixture of rehearsals and separate appearances within that days events. Perhaps the audience was present when the band rehearsed/had a run through for the cameras etc etc.
