I was watching a rerun of the Soprano's last night from the last season. There was the sceen where Janice comes to tell Tony that Junior is out of money. Can someone please tell me what Tony means when he yells to his sister, "Exile on Main Street Janice!"

"You'll be studying history and you'll be down the gym. And I'll be down the pub, probably playing pool and drinking."

I think he meant that his Uncle was exiled (like Napoleon) as far as he was concerned. Dead to him, so to speak.

Yeah that's what I got from it, than Junior was "exiled" from Tony's good graces.

Is "Exile on main street" a saying in America? I always thought the Stones were the first to coin that term (excellent album title, btw). Never heard or read it in any other context, and it obviously went by without me noticing when I saw that Sopranos episode.

Btw, the Sopranos may be not only the best tv show ever but also the tv show with the best song selection.

He's refering to Bobby Bacala(sp). Tony feels betrayed that Bobby is sill concerned with Jr. after Tony has promoted him thru the Mafiso ranks. Aparently, Tony intends to cut Booby out of the buisness. But he never gets the chance, as Bobby is gunned down in the next scene.

maybe it is now, but if so: blame it on the Stones :E

It is not a saying and was not really an appropriate comment. But it has been a running joke through out the Sopranos about the malapropisms & mixed metaphors said by all the characters but mostly the main ones (Tony, Chris, Syl, Paulie). And one of many Stones references in this series.

So how does saying "Exile on Main Street" fit into Tony feeling betrayed by Bobby? I still don't see the connection.

Tony feels betrayed by Bobby and Janice because of their concern for Junior. The line is ' and as far as your husband's concerned. it's exile on Main St, Janice'. As in your husband is exiled from the buisness.

Ah........apparently I was speaking of another "Exile" reference. I remembered Tony saying something about "Exile On Mainstreet" in an episode in one of the earlier seasons.......or so I thought....

In Season four, episode "Whoever Did This" (When Ralphie turns out to be bald, ehem), there are two direct references to Sympathy For The Devil:
Ralph : Please allow me to introduce myself.
Father Intentola (few scenes later, speaking with Ralph): Where you there when Jesus Christ had his moments of doubt and pain ?

The funniest musical reference I've seen on the Sopranos was when Tony and Silvio (Steve Van Zandt) are waiting for Chris Moltisanti.
When he finally arrives, he explains: The highway was jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power-drive (Born To Run)

Are there more Stones references ?

LOL..that was a good one. There was another similar reference in the last episode of one of the early series when Tony has been pulled in by the Feds who have been tapping his phone calls.

Fed - I've something here I want you to listen to...

Tony - If its the Springsteen boxed-set, I've already got it!

There's also the element of being in exile while still being in a high profile place -- i.e. the Soprano family. A wonderful paradox created by the Stones, or at least popularized by them.

That is what I originally had and that's what it sounds like to me. I changed it to "probably" after reading a lyrics site and that is what was listed... "probably playing pool and drinking". I don't know.

just watched the sopranos all over again. the ending was pretty clear to me. and yes janice does have a stones tattoo, although it seems kind of wonky, like it wasn't done by a very good tattooist. loved the stones references, and knew i'd find the answer to the exile on main street answer here...

Exiled because Uncle Junior shot his nephew Tony as he was losing his marbles and going senile and he thus was dead to Tony and thus the reference to the Stones album .

Due to the movie The Many Saints of Newark I am now re watching the Sopranos TV series . I remember it like it was yesterday that I was at an appt. and I was checking out the magazines and I think it was Time magazine that had a review for the new TV series The Sopranos and I remember reading the review and not thinking much except I will watch it and give it a try . Got hooked right away !
