Hello Promoman!
Well, my last visit to London took place in 1973, but maybe this book will help:

Best Fish n' Chips can be found at a place in London called Geales! Also, The Marqee Club is still open, I went there and saw the CLAPTON IS GOD epitaph on the wall. I scrawled my own for the Stones!! I haven't been to London since 1992 but when I return, I will do the Beatles/Rock tour . Thanks for all of that great info!

The Marquee has changed location several times since the Stones first played there and has had 3 homes since you were last there, Debra. Its now in Covent Garden.

Try Berwick Street (same as the Fish'N'Chips shop I mentioned), plenty of record shops.
Or try Camden Town, there's lots of great things to see and do there.

buy an umbrella

Sure. Guess what? They sell umbrellas at each and every tube station. Guess why? Because UK is so green. Guess why? Because of the rain. Suppose that is why there are more English than Spanish people in Benidorm, Alicante and Malaga during the summer. But I like it green, not dry, so London is fine with me. And who can live without Regents Park and the pubs?

Yes, it's true. We tried to go in August but it was no more. sad smiley Of course I didn't realize it closed two years ago already.

Its a great pity that Birmingham doesnt get as much in the way of grants and tourist appeal as London...its a very different city - with beers that will give any of Londons a run for the money - and some...with Burton brewery not too far up the road..(30 miles means its local to Birmingham - from a daily delivery perspective)

Hosting some of the best Curries in the country, it a much more multi-cultural society - which can be rewarding during shopping \ dining \ socialising .. whatever..
OK it hasnt got the pedigree of musical london - but who can deny bands such as UB40 & Duran Duran a place on the music map?..not to mention the Heavy metal output..
All i say is, if you get chance, come and try the local heritage...
Same goes for Manchester and Newcastle...theres equally interesting places other that London in England...
Just a pity that the government doesnt recognise anything north of Watford..

Tour wise, the Stones rarely do, either, in all fairness...

Very true Gazza,
yet there are many "capable staiums" that could host a big gig...

problem stems from MainE Road (man city) where the pitch was left decimated by the Stones audience...it wrecked their season if i remember..

I think all the rest leaned their lesson..

Its got nothing to do with that. The simple answer is that London's the only part of the UK where they can sell a high % of tickets at £150.

Gazza, is the one on Wardour Street the original Marquee?? That's the one I visited.

Re: OT. things to do, when in London

The original one was in Oxford Street, Debra but moved to Wardour Street in 1964 - according to this entry in wikipedia [en.wikipedia.org]

So, the first Stones gig would have taken place at the Oxford Street location and the '71 TV special at the Wardour Street one.

According to that link, it moved to Charing Cross Road in 1988

Some history of the club here - [www.themarqueeclub.net]

They have a pic of what they claim is the Stones with Cyril Davies in january 1963 on this page - [www.themarqueeclub.net] - but its actually Blues, Inc. with what looks like Dick Heckstall-Smith on sax, Alexis Korner (seated) on guitar, Jack Bruce on stand up bass, Cyril davies on harp and some obscure singer who no doubt never made anything of his career.....

In regards to the Blues Inc. photo referred to above, on drums that night (hidden from view) was Charlie Watts.

Oh, and if you like the decorative arts through the centuries, the Victoria and Albert Museum, down the road from the Royal Albert Hall, is amazing and free.

The Victoria and Albert, the Science and the Natural History museums are almost next to each other so, if there are conflicting areas of interest amongst the group, split up and meet up again after 2 or 3 hours, even though each museum you could easily spend all day in.

Remember to travel on the Tube after 09:30 weekdays to take advantage of a cheap One Day Travelcard.

Thanks alot Gazza, for taking the time to show all of that to me! My first trip to London was in 1986 and I went alone to Soho, in search of the Marquee Club and it was basicly closed when I arrived in the afternoon but a janitor let me in! I did scrawl something about the Stones on the wall, took a little tour, recall thinking how SMALL it was inside, no seats with a few tiny pillars holding up the low, ( VERY LOW) ceiling. It was dark and not too clean, and it reminded me of the Cellar, although I'd only seen pictures of that famous club. I do have a few photos, somewhere, in my London photo album. I did get the chills as I stood there by myself, thinking of all of those musicians who played on that tiny stage. Lots of ghosts there, friendly ones.

P.S. I picked up a few old programs that were on the floor; some local bands were listed. I still have those in another album, I think my Stones scrapbook...yup, I have a few of those!

Marquee in Wardour Street was hot, sweaty, matey, delightful with so much great music. Sure there were some off nights but it was a very swinging sixties place to be.

I would look at some travel websites like Lonely Planet ?...think that's what it's called...real reviews from folks that have visited recently..London has some really great Indian food...I would take your kids to historical places and skip places like Sticky Fingers ( when Wyman sold his restaurant, all his cool personal memorabilia was removed )...Hard Rock Cafe is also a waste of time I think...like any other city, if you ask a taxi driver or hotel folks where to go, you'll be pointed to a place that they have a connection with...talk to the locals every chance you get...the best places are not on the map....peter

any version of the Marquee post Wardour sty. were soulless corporate sheds. my first job in london was in Wardour st. I checked the Marquee out first day and couldnt belive the stench of stale beer and piss. but it somehow seemed transformed at gig time, best gigs i've seen there were ZZ Top, REM (first london show) the Jam. It was a bit of a liggers place butmost london club venues are like that.

As for best Fish n' Chips, that aint berwick st mate and yes i have tried them (ok not bad) it would be Leigh St in Bloomsbury. MMMH might even go there today as i'm in town.

Is it true that Sticky Fingers no longer belong to Bill Wyman ?
I will be also in London next month and thought it can be funny
to stop off at...

Bill sold it years ago...not sure exactly when...when I visited London in 93 I couldn't wait to go there...the place was packed with Bill's personal archive..every square inch of the place contained photos and priceless collectables...when I returned a few years ago, I was bummed that all the cool stuff was gone & replaced with commercial items...like the Hard Rock chain of restaurants, not worth the visit..Alice Cooper's bar/restaurant in Phoenix is far more interesting...at least until he sells it & removes his personal collection....peter
