all of you who knows something about this guitar, please help:
What would be good value for new american vintage '52 telecaster?
what can you say of it as your review of guitar?

I just saw one in my music shop and fall in love...
I have fender esquire '50 reissue, it's fantastic - could you compare those guitars?

any info is welcome... thanks!

Heh, I'm about to buy one. Here in the US you can get them for $1350 or so. I don't know how they compare to an Esquire Tele.

I saw Bob Margolin (Muddy Waters guitarist 70's - 80's) last week. Looks like he was playing one. Just the look of it can tell a story...does that make sense?

Nice guitar but you have to play a few.
The odd one is really killer...up with the CS "Nocaster". Some on the other hand are little better than a typical Mexican Classic 50s. [The occasional one of which is also a real killer once you pop some nicer pickups in ;^)].

I think it's largely down to the ash body. The density and tonal quality of the ash used in production is more variable than most woods... and that natural variation can make or break a Tele in my opinion. It's often just down to pot luck.

[It's not quite as straightforward as the lightest ones being the best either...though the light ones do usually sound a bit more "bouncy" and sweeter.
It's the way the neck and body come together. The resonant bevaviour of some pairings just allows them to sing better than others. A good Tele is instantly identifiable. You get all the requisite clatter and clang, all the snarling and bite...but with an underlying warmth and sweetness too.]

I have a '52 resissue that I absolutely love. My only problem with the guitar was the "dark circuit" which is enabled when the pickup selector is in the forward postion and essentially is the neck pickup with no tone control. I'm not sure why Leo did this way (until the mid 50's Teles were wired in this manner) but I re-wired it and has the more verstaile (in my view at least) and "modern" pickup selction scheme.

As to comparing the Esquire and Telecaster the only difference that I know of is that the Esquire only has a bridge pickup while the Tele cas a bridge and neck pickup. Other than that they are the same.

The "dark circuit" was to substitute a bass in the ol' days
...that's what I read about it.

Yes, that's correct. Actually, the middle position selects the neck element, including the tone control. I am not sure if you can select both elements together. The '52 reissue comes with a kit to rewire it.

A poly finish won't darken - a nitro finish will.

I don't know how the '52 AV RI are done, though.

They have a nitro laquer finish.

The "vintage reissue" series of Fender has a poly clear coat and a very thin nitro coat on top. It's 90% poly, 10% nitro.

I don't really like '52 VR's, as they have pencil necks and heavy body's, and a very ugly yellow colour. But, they normaly do sound very good. They sound like you expect from a good Tele.

I think that in the middle switch position both pick-ups are working.

Not with the original wiring, in that case the middle position is the neck element.

MAthijs, you said you own japanese '72 custom RI... Could you compare necks on '72 RI and '52 RI... Recently I tried '52 AVRI, but where I live they don't have '72 in stock often....

thx!

Zdravo Borna! I own MIM Esquire, I turned it into a Tele, I added hand-wound pickup... I tried '52 recently (vjerovatno u istom ducanu gdje i ti smiling smiley) and it appears that Esquire MIM RI and '52 US RI have almost identical neck profiles (which is really important to me) Other than that, I can say Classic MIM series are very good guitars, nice wood, well built, but their electronics and pickups are not on pair with US reissues... Ali ima u Zagrebu lik koji rucno mota/premotava pikapove i koji je specijaliziran za fiftes i sxties gitare, i radi cuda... So, if you loved that '52RI because of the sound, I suggesst you go with custom wound/re-wound pickups on your Esquire... If you liked the overall feeling of the '52 AVRI, then I don't know... US Fenders are really overpriced here in Europe...
