Dazed and Confused - The Yardbirds

Found this clip on youtube. Its a 1968 performance on French TV. Much of it is similar to the later Zep versions, but Keith Relf makes it quite a different arrangment with his harmonica.

Link is not valid.

I do have a copy of the song on a Yardbirds Bootleg, Live at the Big Apple, 1968

The current lineup of the Yardbirds STILL plays Dazed And Confused and the crowd always goes wild when they do. They still do it the same way they did it in 1968, with lyrics that are very different than the Led Zeppelin version.

Yeah it's more like the Jake Holmes semi-spoken word original rather than Percy's paintstripper stylee.

Were there any other songs written by Page, perform by Zeppelin, that was also performed by the Yardbirds? (I know White Summer was often played with Black Mountain Side)

Not that I can think of. Though, the solo from the Yardbirds track Think About It was later recycled for Dazed and Confused.

Most of what Page recorded with the Yardbirds wasn't particularly good. Amongst the odd gem (Puzzles, Little Games, Think About It) were terrible cover versions like Ha Ha! Said The Clown and Tinker Tailor Sailor Man. The fact that the LP Little Games is his legacy with the band is pretty sad for the guy who would shortly go on to form one of the greatest rock bands in history.

The best way to check out Pages pre-Zep career is to pick up one of the numerous CD's covering his career as a session musician.

But in Pages true fashion, he would recycle Yardbirds era material in Zeppelin. The intro for Song Remains the Same, sounds like the intro from Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor, only spruced up a bit more. White Summer was performed solo with the Yardbirds. These are a couple of references I can come up with, but I will say I like the version of Dazed and Confused by the Yardbirds better than Zeppelins version. I like Relfs singing better than Plants screeching. Its just better.

Great picture Joker, and what made it really great was the Queen asking Clapton what he does.

I don't dislike the Yardbirds version of Dazed and confused at all. It’s a shame they didn't have a stab at it in the studio. I think they only performed it right at he tail end of their career.

Its all ifs and maybes, but history won't have it any way. Just grateful to sites like youtube where we can view this great footage.

One other Page era Yardbirds performance I'd LOVE to watch is from Ready Steady Go! in 1966. It’s from the very short lived Beck on lead, Dreja on rhythm and Page on bass set-up. There a re a few pictures around, but the footage probably doesn't exist anymore!

Hello!
It should be noted, that White Summer/Black Mountain Side is an English Folk song called "She moved through the Fair", and it was recorded by English guitar great Davy Graham years before Page, how Page got away with composer credits for this one is beyond me!
I've also heard that Dazed and Confused resembles an old song called "I'm Confused", can anybody verify this??
But thanks for the link Big Al!

Jake Holmes was a folk singer who did a song called I'm Confused, later covered by the Yardbirds and then later covered by Zeppelin, who retitled it Dazed and Confused. Yardirds version was called I'm Confused at the time, tho it's now usually referred to by its better known name.

And those were some cool photos of a very young Zeppelin, thanks Baboon for posting 'em.

The Yardbirds toured with Jake Holmes in 1967 and yes, you’ve guessed it, Dazed and Confused was part of his set.

I may be wrong here, but I have a feeling that Page is featured on Jake Holmes studio cut of the song.

Just think what a weird "greatest hits" medley he could do in concert.

Its a pity about that specific concert. To my knowledge its the only time the Stones, Beatles and Who all shared a concert together, and none of their footage exists.

I'm suprised The Who's doesn't, but I haven't seen it. I think The Small Faces were also on the bill and maybe The Beach Boys? Probably has to go down as the greatest NME Poll Winners concert, at least in terms of the lineup.
