Love it. I thought is was a cultural thing that as a Southern American I didn't get. However, it's in the realm of absract surrealism then I'm aboard. I love it. Thanks for helping to get me on the right plain when I sing along with the song.
What a great song!
I figured now was the time to ask questions that confounded or bothered me over the years.
What's the last verse about - the grandma's, their pensions, the queen, etc. I assume there was something going on in England at that time that Jagger's commenting about. No shortage of social commentary on Beggar's.
Maybe clearly influenced by Bob - who was not? - but hardly "an attempt to write & sound like Dylan" because thematically, what The Stones have to say on BB, is quintessential Stones. And really the tracks clearly most 'influenced' by BD are Jigsaw, and...un...well, "Family" (the outtake) but that has a Burroughsian take on the old Stones theme of exposing dark sid of middle class hypocrisy in "Family"s, & it's far from their best exploration of that theme. But "Flowers"? Not too much obvious Dylan influence on that on imo...Actually during this period - late '65 to late '66 Bob had become quite influenced by raw bluesey barrelhouse rock 'n' roll (including the Stones, among many) while the Stones were at their least American roots/blues influenced (BtB thru Satanic)...Now one can hear the Byrds on parts of "December's Children" but that's filtered Dylanesque and another topic...
I'm sure Mick thinks it has too many words and is "medium to less well known" plus the tempo would mean people might get bored...Hell I'd settle for "Prodigal Son"...I do love the dirty density of Jigsaw Puzzle, all those guitars in the murk, Nicky superlative as usual, Brian's strange choice of mellotron or synth or whatever to thicken it even more...

It's 'Methylated' as in Methylated spirit - a cheap form of alcohol used for fuel and also the last refuge of a desparate (and broke) alcoholic. Although most of those would probably not bother with the 2 slices of bread.
