Who liked "Miss You" when it was out originally?
And who likes it now?
I hear so many fans saying they hate Miss You.
Still new generations of fans arrived with Miss You.

I think Mick is ahead of many fans,
especially the older ones; the older generation,
who swear everything after 1972 is crap.
Don't expect to like each and every song.
Just leave it to those who love it,
and I am sure there will be plenty, not just me.

I liked "Miss You" when it was new and now. Ditto "Sweet Thing." I don't begrudge you or anyone else who likes "Charmed Life," but it just didn't do it for me.

Personally, whether they're older fans or not, I don't begrudge anyone DISliking
Miss You or Charmed Life or whatever. I particularly like how Rocky put
it, "It just didn't do it for me."

There is a HUGE difference between saying something is "shit" and saying that
you "don't like it."

I personally don't like "What the Cat Dragged In" from aBB, but I would never
say it was shit. It was obviously put together by very talented people and
is technically very good in many ways. I just don't happen to like it,
it doesn't do it for me. I could say the same about much of Mick Taylor's
1973 live work. Obviously it's not "shit", but it sounds inappropriately busy
to my ears.

In my opinion it takes a huge amount of hubris to pronouce ANYTHING
done by a hardworking giant like Jagger as "shit". That kind of
confident pronouncement could only be made by a moron.

Me. Its still a fantastic record. I fail to see the comparison with 'Charmed life' just because its (apparently) a similar 'genre'. Theres only really two types of music. Good and bad - and the only yardstick is one's own personal taste.

Still a great song, but they cant play it live for toffee. The fact that its been reduced to a piss-break song has hastened its contempt for many when performed in concert, even amongst those of us who love the original.

This has been an interesting thread primarily because it seemed to push so many buttons without ever being about Brian or Mick Taylor (well, almost).

To use another example, I love "Old Habits Die Hard." If someone comes along and calls it crap and says Jagger has sold out writing and singing Hallmark cards, I'll likely respond and defend it or at least voice that I love it. There's a world of a difference between doing that and someone adding something like "and anyone who loves it must be lying or is deranged." The latter is insulting, the former is an opinion. I think most people come here to express opinions. I like learning things I didn't know about the band and their work. I enjoy finding out scoops before the media gets wind of it. I enjoy reading what others think even when they don't agree with me. I sometimes argue a contrary position because its diverting to do so.

I didn't like "Charmed Life" and rank it below "Let's Work." I hoped I would like it, but didn't. That doesn't mean I'll never like anything new ever again. Its one song. I wasn't crazy about much of A BIGGER BANG either, but I still think VOODOO LOUNGE and BRIDGES TO BABYLON are really great albums. I'll defend something obscure like "Cherry Oh Baby" and try to figure out what makes some fans object so strongly to it. Those of us that thought "Charmed Life" was to quote "Streets of Love"-- "awful bad" should be able to engage in friendly discussion with those that think its a good dance tune. That's mainly what I've seen here and the only real issue should be not to insult people for thinking differently regardless of which side of the fence they sit on. Finally, I don't think its unreasonable to suggest very talented artists are capable of producing shit and I don't think you need to be able to play football in order to comment on last night's game.

is this a joke? you sound so confident about (other?) morons' confidence.

I've never understood the "everyone's entitled to their opinion, except people with strong opinions" opinion.

I liked it when it came out and still like it when I hear the album version. The live version just does not do it for me. Usually a good time to run to the Men's room.

Agreed Gazza, the original and live versions from 78, 81 and even some in the 90s were good. But today this song is horrible live, watching them play this live in 2005 at many points during the song Keith and Ronnie were not even touching their guitars, just coasting on auto-pilot letting the back up musicians carry the song. This song used to be battling guitar leads from Ronnie and Keith. Today its like a break for the band and a boring audience sing a long. Songs that are overplayed all tend to get to this point where they are not played with any real life to them. Hence the arguments about giving some songs a rest and playing others.

I like the music of charmed life and it's stuck in my head today. but it bothers me that the song's about him and his ego.

the fact that sting and elton john are part of his charmed life seems strange. like he feels privileged to know them - i would've thought he just views them as regular people/friends - he preceded them in fame, after all. he insults himself by including brittney spears - the fact that she got to meet him is part of *her* charmed life!

The song is not that bad. A bit lightweight perhaps but still bearable.

All the remixing in the world cannot disguise the fact that Charmed Life sounds like an outtake and is unfinished. Although I will admit that it's catchy.

Is Rick Rubin's original track even circulating?

Please!!!

hard Woman is a great song as well as the others ones!!!

They are not Stones sound or style, just that.

This is a real divisive song -- goodness, Rock's Off & here at IORR, the battle is raging over whether "Charmed Life" is thwe worst thing Mick has ever done, or to some, an enjoyable if lightweight romp.

I'm on the latter side I have to admit, I dug the song at first hearing, the opening guitar/percussion bars are quite cool! Sure, it's lightweight, and sounds more like an idea-not-completed than an actual song, but, it's a groove. And I just happen to like the groove.

The lyrics are a wee bit odd -- surely it must be Mick being a tad ironic, even if he almost certainly DOES have a charmed life. Can't imagine him crowing & gloating so blatantly like that in a song, or could he?

Well, whatever it may be -- I like the groove. Obviously not a contender for Great-Stones/Mick-Song status, but, it just sounds lively, vibrant, and as said, love the groove!

Yes, he does seem to like the attention, doesn't he? And why the hell did he include spears in the video. Not the spears from now and not the spears from 10 years ago

May be it is possible to understand that there is something that is called individual and personal taste? Some like hip-hop, some like rap, some like disco, some like blues, some like rock, or jazz. Some like the mother, some like the daughter, others like sunshine, kids even like rain. Some like Charmed Life . Not the end of the world really.

Personal taste is what most of the past five pages have been about. Fans expressing what they like or don't like about a new song. I didn't think most of the comments were insulting to those with opposing views. We're fans. We're passionate about music and performances.

I remember being asked by my friends how can you like Miss You (they did!) because it's Disco? Yes, I liked it but I didn't love it. And that goes with the whole praised Some Girls album. The RnR songs are punk which leaves the wonderful Shattered and Beast of Burden and the great lyrics of Fool to Cry as decent. Anyway, it's the Stones at their Anything-you-can-do-we-can-do-better best. So, I start yawning whenever reading something like it's the best Stones album since 1978...
What I wanted to express in earlier posts, too, was that I appreciate the differences in the solo work - not only of Mick but of Keith, too - in comparison to the Stones releases.
Only sometimes I think of a band's version instead: I think Secrets would have been a great Stones song but it was ruined by the absurd choice of Nile Rodgers as producer though Bill Laswell would have been even more absurd but strangely did better songs on Mick's first one.
On the other hand, Mick's solo-way to write ballads starting from Hard Woman is not really my kind of cup of (I only drink) tea (when ill) which to a certain extent includes Old Habits. As Keith's productivity seems to go down over the years songs in the vein of Out of tears and Streets of love dind't appear on solo records but on Stones lps played in a Stones way.
On the other hand, I always wonder how the rocking soundtrack bits of Alfie would sound as a Stones song! But: F.e. the hard rocking songs ruin Wandering Spirit to me. (That's why Slide on This is my favourite Stones solo!).
I like Charmed Life though but, folks, don't blame it on the remix. The sopund is good, that connotation means half a dozen versions of Rock and a hard place etc.

I listened to it with and without the video. Video is not my cup of tea, very distracting, but the song is quite better to listen to on its own. Old stones fans may not dig it, but I doubt it was written for them. The bass line ain't bad, not Bill, but not bad.

Age has nothing to do with being able to appreciate good music. If anything, maybe with age you can appreciate more types of music than most people can when theyre about 18.

You're right about it not being written for them - then again, thats why its on a solo record and not a Stones one. Its a perfectly healthy thing that any member of the band is able to be creative outside the Rolling Stones 'bubble'.

You have to wonder though who it IS actually aimed at. Is there a market for people who maybe dont care much for the Stones but who prefer Jagger solo, and who get turned on by a 64 year old making dance records?

ouch......it's no secret that Mick likes that sort
of music for his solo stuff....to paraphrase mick... "why should
i do rolling stones-style music for my solo records ....i can do that
with the stones."

most dance music is nameless and faceless.....and succeeds or
fails on its own musical merits. if Charmed Life is played at
a dance club it will be judged for its groove not for the age
of the artist.

i haven't been to a dance club in 15 yrs so....what do i know winking smiley

personally I have diverse musical taste...so i don't mind when the
stones (as a group or individually) stray from the sound that
made them the greatest rock n roll band.

IORR............but I like it!

No. There is no such thing as a Mick Jagger fan who is not also a Rolling Stones fan. His audience is a cult within a cult.

Actually, I'm trying now to think of ANY member of ANY famous band who has a following outside his famous band's fanbase.

I guess there might be Phil Collins fans who have no use for Genesis. Steve Winwood fans who never heard of Traffic. Yeah, I guess that sort of artist DOES exist, but Mick's not one of them.

Same here. Many of my fave Stones songs are those which stray off the beaten track a bit. They're much more than just a rock n roll band and their own individual passions are very diverse, which is good.
