I never saw the Sex Pistols as really had no interest in them. My only Pistols story concerns the 'God Save The Queen' single. In 1977 I was working in the record department at Harrods, which at the time was the second largest record outlet in London after HMV Oxford Street. It was also very much the Royal Family's department store of choice and held 3 or 4 Royal warrants back then (all of which it has now lost!).
It was a great year musically with Punk, the Disco scene of Saturday Night Fever and the likes of Abba, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, etc, etc all competing in the charts. When GSTQ was released and entered the charts it arrived in our weekly delivery of chart singles to be sold as usual. It was very quickly banned by the BBC as well as most independant radio stations - it was the Silver Jubilee year after all! Anyway, the single was on the shelves at Harrods for two days before the store manager paid us a visit demanding an explanation as to why we had this 'offensive material' on display and on sale in 'the Queen's favourite shop'! Having saved a copy for myself, the rest were duly sent back to Virgin and no Sex Pistols singles were ever stocked by Harrods after that.
