Keith Richards...Somethin' else!

I was blown away when I saw him doing this at the Seville guitar legends gig around 15 years back (not in person unfortunately, live TV broadcast) - been listening alot to the version he did with the XPWs in Boston '93 recently (great soundboard boot posted here several times) and I'm convinced that this is one of Keith's best ever vocal performances - all the lyrics are spot on, strong delivery (he sings into the mic as opposed to somewhere in its general direction), great phrasing, not to mention some vicious guitar playing and kick-arse drumming by Steve Jordan.

I'm sure Eddie Cochran was rockin' and a-rollin' in his grave.

With all due respect to KR, Tom Petty & HB also did a great cover of this song.

loved this too Roll73...especially as the great Steve Cropper is also there, and Robert Cray and the fact that they all look like they're having a damn good time not even mentioning Keith's playing, really cool bluesy thing he's got going - shame he doesnt do more of that stuff

it's up on youtube, along with his performance of "Goin' Down" and some other performances from the event too

Man, that's something else, I remember watching and taping the guitar legends thing from Seville, thought Keef rocked out, and as has been said everybody seemed to be having a ball.

the stones worked on this one during the '78 tour rehearsals....can only imagine how cool that would have been....

Love the Winos version. Never heard any of the Seville recordings that didn't sound like hissy MP3's were the source so I prefer the slower, heavier Boston arrangement. I would also recommend Keith and some of the Winos playing Fats Domino's "I'm Ready" on the MAKE IT FUNKY DVD celebrating New Orleans' musical heritage. For some reason, Keith really seems to play his heart out on stuff like this more than he does with the Stones.

He does seem to really get his teeth into this kind of stuff. Would love to hear a whole album done in the studio - kind of like McCartney did on Run Devil Run.

a look a-there, here she comes
there comes that girl again
wanted to date her since i don't know when
but she don't notice me when i pass
she goes with all the guys from outa my class
but that can't stop me from a-thinkin' to myself
she's sure fine lookin' man, she's something else

hey, look a-there, across the street
there's a car made just for me
to own that car would be a luxery
but my dollar can't afford the gas
a brand new convertible is outa my class
but that can't stop me from athinkin' to myself
that car's fine lookin' man, it's something else

hey, look ahere, just wait and see
worked hard and saved my dough
i'll buy that car that i been wanting so
get me that girl and we'll go ridin' around
we'll look real sharp with the flight top down
i keep right on a-dreamin' and a-thinkin' to myself
when it all comes true man, wow, that's something else

look a-there, what's all this
never thought i'd do this before
but here i am a-knockin' on her door
my car's out front and it's all mine
just a forty-one ford, not a fifty-nine
i got that girl an' i'm a-thinkin' to myself
she's sure fine lookin' man, wow, she's something else

At the very same show Keef also did "Shake, Rattle and Roll" with His Bobness. Bob looks like he could not care less - hilarious. And very rightly so - it was a guitar festival and it has to be a parallel universe that hails Bob for his chops on the acoustic guitar?? *lol*

By the way - love both Keef's and Sid's version of "Somethin' Else"

This was a killer opener on the second Winos tour. This one really greased up the crowd, and you could tell Keith loves this tune by the way he drove the band out of the gate.

I prefer the Seville rendition to the slower Winos version. I'm Going Down was killer at Seville too.

Mick does borrow the "looky here" bit for "Mother of a Man" released about the same time Keith was playing the song live.

Zeppelin also do a good cover of this on the 1969 Albert Hall gig from the live DVD set

Also interesting to note that, especially on the Seville version, you can hear Keith beginning to shape the opening riff from You got me Rocking on the last couple of minutes after the last verse. (D to D7 with open g string for you axe nerds out there.)

I thought for a minute you were thinking about the Who. Then I remembered that it was "Summertime Blues" - fantastic version on "Leeds" CD ;-)
