You're absolutely right, casinoboogie, but I was also referring to Beelyboys own solo - just like MT in SFM! ;-)

making studio records is totally different when playing live you cant hide your center stage and when your chance comes to play that solo, Mick Taylor surley stamps his mark on the greatest stones live recordings from 1969 to 1973. Its sad that we still have to go back to that period to find the stones at their greatest, and Mick Jagger as said that in interviews.

I just listened to Street Fighting Man and the last minutes are really tiresome.
I can't appreciate the greatness in that extended guitar masturbation.
That's just way too many notes being played there.
The rest of Brussels is perfect of course.

I guess if your into many notes that would be your thing or if your into tired
playing with bum notes and bends to define you as a rock and roll guitar player
and that whole life style of the Attidue is more important on stage and dancing
around then extended soloing would be boredom to the ears.

Something in between perhaps? smiling smiley

Absolutely not, Taylor's playing is brilliant on Nasty Music and I especially think that 'Gimme Shelter' rocks so hard and then has this beautiful slow down with only MT playing. My fav version of the song.

Checkout Tumbling Dice with MT, now thats a song, like a train in your face!
Ever since, it has been too thin for my taste.

I always thought TD was one of Taylor's weaker moments. The same with Happy. On every other song he's brilliant.

what about the groove they get into at the end of TD though? surely you can see that is awesome!
got to agree about Happy though - i didnt really like it anyway after the 72 tour - sounds way too sloppy between the other songs, and Keef is barely able to shout the lyrics (and i actually found his singing to be tops in 72, ala Ladies and Gents)

Beelyboy articulates my feelings brilliantly.

The guy should write a book on the Stones. Seriously.

Beelyboy, that's a majestic description - great read

It's a shame you got to hear the 1st MSG show of 1975 - you might have a different opinion of that tour if you went to some other show.

I am a bit biased 'cos Woody is my favourite guitarist, but, yes, MT did have a tendency to overplay a bit. I mean, he's a great guitarist, totally underrated as far as I'm concerned but his playing in general was too polished for the Stones sound (yet somehow Nicky Hopkins' -another virtuoso- wasn't...) Granted by 1973 Keith was pretty smacked out (call me a heretic but I find Keith's leads can be REALLY annoying at any given time; the master should just stick to rhythm; one Chuck Berry is enough) so maybe MT felt he had to (over)compensate. Bottom line, he's a master slide player but I must admit, the odd solo aside ("Winter" probably being my favourite of his) I prefer his bass playing.

...In regards to Brussels, though, I don't find his leads annoying per se, but the concert does seem at times to be like "The Mick Taylor Show". "Less is more" doesn't seem to be in the man's vocabulary. Truth be told I find Billy Preston and the screeching horns WAAAAAY more annoying...still a damn good show, though!
