Ronnie is not Taylor ut I like this version. And I never really thought SFM was a great encore.

The playing is ok but the "singing" is terrible. Not one of MickĀ“s best periods, the mid-seventies.

the intro sounds a lot like When The Whip Comes Down, or not??? and Micks singing "terrible"? dont forget, its the encore of the longest show the Stones ever played!!! exhausted, yes, but terrible - no. and I love this brutal guitar sound!!!

Jagger was singing like that throughout the gig.

Everyone is playing quite well idividually (ronnie a bit sporadic) (Bill and Charlie very well) (Keith completely "gone") - but the band does not gell. They are not a unit. Five or six guys vaguely all engaged in a Stones song called SFM.

It was still a version evolved during Taylor's reign and Ronnie was fitting into that role.

After '73 the song was better when they gave it a new birth - a la Stripped or Licks.

Hadn't noticed before how prominent Billy's clavinet is on that song. Their very own mid-seventies Chuck Levell indeed.

Everything is so involved...the set list..the show...the problems with Keith...a festival show....the last show of the seventies..flimflam period...punk in the shadow...all those obscure old songs...this new stage...ronnie on top...and everybody real stoned..this show never bores me!!

It's an interesting spectacle but shows the band at their nadir - before the re-birth.

Within 7- months there was a relatively clean Keith, a revitalised Jagger and they were knocking out Some Girls.

The best thing about the show was inclusion of numbers that had not been played for about ten years. Around and Around. Rooster. LSTNT. R66. Even Stray Cat was a rarity.

It was because they'd worked on these for this show that the El Mocambo gigs were so "special". Moe special, because they were played better as a band, and a smaller venue, (Slightly!)

Knebworth is one of the few 1976 shows I keep listening too...so cool when they dig up those rarely played songs. Don't think they got Street Fighting Man or Midnight Rambler together though, but they're charming in they're own wierd way.

It was a goodbey to the 70 ties...to Billy and ...all that stuff...and really not a example of a 75/76 show rather a pre 78 show...i think...cheers Erik!!

hey Rooster cheers back to you!
One of the best moments of Knebworth is the first 30 sec of the show - when Satisfaction hits you like a train, after the fragile guitar-intro

Within 7 months a relatively clean Keith? Sorry but no sir he was in the same condition. He was in a better shape by spring 1978 but quit heroin in early 1980.

Knebworth Wild Horses may be my favorite version. so much emotion and longing in that one. Micks Intro is not an exeggeration at all :"are you ready to hear a sad, sad song? this is a sad sad song" Indeed!.

He did a big ol' toot o'summink before the song. The camera catches him and Mick catches him and starts acting all hyperactive to distract those closeups!

LA FORUM,

Yes, sorry .......... I lost a year there somewhere (listening to a MT '73 solo or something) I meant that KR was rel. clean for recording of SG ......... but he certainly didn't look it - when did he come out of "rehab", (the woman with the black box)?

Hey youre right in a way, I guess he was in a horrible condition aropund Knebworth and in better shape after the black box (summer of 1977?) but he continued with H up until 1980 when he quit. Wasnt he in better shape by 1979, late 1978? He seemed more dead at Knebworth if we compare the tours (1976/1978). Dr Meg is the woman with the box and I emailed her husband George but he didnt have any photos...Yes, I had to ask.

Tumbling Dice - Knebworth : the best ever!!!

Re: Youtube: SFM 1976 Knebworth - is it good?

Knebworth was the first time for many years that the Stones abandoned their usual set list and went for rarely played songs right back to their first album. We got Route 66 and Around and Around for starters. Plus there was Stray Cat Blues, Little Red Rooster, Wild Horses, Let's Spend The Night Together and Dead Flowers. The reason Jagger's voice was a bit shaky was because they came on almost four hours after they were due to start and by then it was pretty cold. There are many theories why they were so late - 10cc taking an interminable long time to tune their synths in the cold August night and Keith waiting on Spanish Tony to arrive. They finished at nearly 2am and no one depending on trains could get home until the first arrived at 6am. I remember sleeping under a tree outside the station waiting for it to open.
