GITD sold 953 copies in UK the first day, but the sales peaked by the end of the week and debuted at #44 with 12,100 copies sold. The album had a decent chart run (5 weeks in the Top 100 - 44-52-69-72-77) and was certified Silver in UK by sales of 60,000.
Bad timing of release, too many high profile albums that year.

This week in UK, the #7 album has sold 12,629 while the #45 album sold 3,902.
The sales are so low that Ringo Starr got his first Top 75 charting album in UK since 1974 this week, with only 6,342 copies sold his best of collection debuted at #26.

Mick's best of only needs sales of 2,000 the first week to reach the top 75, 4,200/4,500 to reach the top 40 and 7,000 to reach the top 20.

Ringo might sell more albums in the UK if he TOURED there once in a while. Has Ringo EVER toured the UK? I mean, since the last Beatles UK tour, in 1965?

I do believe that all statistics on albums before - oh, say - the 80's at least should be taken with a grain of salt - not least because of the many different chart back then. ;-)

Statistics on NEW albums should be taken with a grain of salt. A new release can debut at #1 with sales of 150,000, then sink like a stone. You can have a #1 album that ends up selling less than half a million copies.

It's bad for us that Rock and Roll Circus bombed so badly. I'm sure it made them feel that further vault releases are not worth their while.

unfortunatley I think your right. The only way I see the vaults being released is way in the future and theres some sort of "Rolling Stones Historical Society" that does it.

i agree 100%.
Make me think even more that chart postions, Grammys (and who knows what) can be bought for the right price.
I've always wondered too who is buying these CDs that sell 7,8 million copies.
Spice Girls, Gwen Stafini. I don't know anyone who owns them.
and the charts...there are so many, from so many countries, who knows what people are really buying or listening too.
I do like to look at charts to see what i can download.

I still don't get it...did Hot Rocks sell 12 mio units, because sales were multiplied by x2 (so effectively only 6 mio. units)? Or did it really go 12 mio times over the counter?

It sold 12 million, the album needs to be 100+ minutes long to be multiplied and the running time for Hot Rocks is less than 87 minutes.
Also the chart run of the album was impressive.

"Multi-disc albums released after 1981 whose total length is at least 100 minutes count one for each disc in these figures, which accounts for the many double (or more) albums in the list. For multi-disc albums released before 1982, there is no length requirement."

But Hot Rocks was released before 1982, so the 100min. rule doesnt count...?

I still think Hot Rocks sold 6 million x 2. As I mentioned, I doubt there's any double album from the 60's or 70's that's over 100 minutes in length simply because it's hard to fit 50 minutes of music on vinyl. The grooves would be extremely narrow for the stylus. Double albums like Exile and Deep Purple Made In Japan can fit on one CD.

Since the 100 minute rule only applies to post-'81 releases, it seems to be a construct of the CD era. Every double CD is going to be over 100 minutes and thus count as two units, while nearly every pre-'81 double LP is going to be under 100 minutes and count as one unit. You really can't (or shouldn't) put more than 25 minutes of music on one LP side. If you do, you will lose volume. I had a Tod Rundgren album that had about 30 minutes on each side and you had to turn the volume way up to even hear the damn thing!

Sales of 12 million for Hot Rocks should not surprise anyone. Everyone owned that album in the 70s. For casual fans, it was the one Stones album to buy. What I don't understand is how an album could sell that many copies and still only make it to #4 on the Billboard chart.

Back in Black only made it to #3 on the Billboard chart and that's the second largest selling album of all time (worldwide).

The chart peak is the highest placement reached for a particular week during a title's chart stay. HOT ROCKS's highest showing on the Billboard album charts was #4 for a particular week, but the album's popularity was/is tremendous and consequently it went on to sell many millions of copies and has re-entered the charts numerous times. A good example is A BIGGER BANG which debuted strongly at #3 its first week of release but quickly fell down the charts as its appeal was largely limited to diehard fans. Does that make more sense?

I think tatters was clear with his post, the rule started in 1981.

We can't be sure about any sales pre-1991 when Soundscan was introduced. Hot Rocks has sold almost 2.500,000 since May 1991, the album has sold a lot more than 3.500,000 in 1971-1991.

I'd guess R&R Circus might have sold poorly (this was the season of Beatles Anthology 3 or whatever, & R&RC had Lennon, Who, & obviously a legendary Stones performance) because people bought the video issued simultaneously - just a guess. And nobody - NOBODY - has had an uninterruped chart run of EVERY studio album over the course of 45 years (well, '64 - 05) reaching Billboard's top 5. That's an indication of a constantly solid, if changing, fan base. And if some albums (AB don't have 'legs' or reach new fans, NO one else has ever even comes close.

Every studio album by The Stones has been top five on both sides of the Atlantic with only two exceptions;

-England's Newest Hit Makers- only reached number eleven on U.S. charts.

-Bridges.. only reached number six on the UK charts.
