Hot Rocks seem to be the best selling of their albums in the US atleast.

I think it is Some Girls.

I'm quite sure I read something about it in the "According to the rolling stones" biography.

If the list at the above link is credible (and it certainly looks that way to gullible ol' me), Hot Rocks has sold 12 million and Some Girls is the next-highest ranking Stones album, at 6 million.

If you want to get totally depressed, take a peek at the albums that have sold more than Hot Rocks, and more than Some Girls.

People, our work here is far from over.

THat's a depressing list indeed - Eagles and Garth Brooks....shivers...
Strange to see the 5 vinyl Springsteen box so high on the list - it's a disappointing album.

I think that double albums count as two units when sales are calculated by the RIAA.

There are a lot of multiple-disc albums in the upper rank of the list. That would explain anomalies like The Wall ranking high above Dark Side of the Moon, and Hot Rocks doubling the performance of Some Girls, even though Forty Licks is the modern Stones compilation of choice that continues beyond the release of Sticky Fingers.

And it might explain that quintiple set by Springsteen ranking so high (at 13 million, maybe it sold in the range of 2.6 million copies).

In a perfect world, good music would be popular, and popular music would be good. The world is far from perfect.

Man, there are a lot of country music fans out there. It's like a separate world.

Tell me about it. I had to keep dodging Toby Keith fans all over town last night.

That's why that Eagles album is so successful. Every country fan AND every rock fan owns it.

Proof that there is no God: Whitney Houston, "The Bodyguard" soundtrack. 17 million copies sold in the US alone.

Proof that there may be a God after all: Whitney Houston is currently cracked out, broke and unsuccessfully attempting a comeback.

From RIAA: For boxed sets and double albums with a running time that exceeds 100 minutes, the RIAA multiplies shipments by the number of discs.

Hot Rocks running time is 86 minutes, its certified for 12 million copies, the album spent 243 weeks on Billboard's chart between 1972 and 1990, I think it sold more than 4 million copies during that time with tremendous chart performance, only since 1991 went to move 2.3 million copies.

Stones best selling albums:

1. Hot Rocks
(15+ million copies - 12m+ U.S, 2m Europe, 300k Canada, 500k Australia-Japan)

2. Some Girls
(9-10 million copies - 6.5m U.S, 1.5m Europe, 300k Australia-Japan)

3. Tattoo You
(8 million copies - 4.2m U.S, 2m Europe, 500k Canada, 400k Australia-Japan)

4. Forty Licks
(7.5 million copies - 2.8m U.S, 3m Europe, 500k Canada, 500k Australia-Japan)

5. Sticky Fingers/Big Hits/Steel Wheels/Voodoo Lounge/Goats Head Soup
(5.5/6 million copies each)

About Hot Rocks, here a list of albums with most weeks on U.S Top 200 chart (1955-2002)

1. 741, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd [1973-88]
2. 490, Johnny`s Greatest Hits, Johnny Mathis [1958-68]

Hey Georgelicks. Thanks, as usual, for the numbers.

I find it a bit odd that RIAA would count doubles only if they're over 100 minutes to count as 2 units. Not many albums were 50 minutes or longer. 25 minutes of music on one side of vinyl is stretching it.

haww, i know what you mean...but dig, also proof that there IS a god, in that Dolly Parton tells of the great personal pressure to give 'i will always love you' to elvis when he wanted to record it, but the Colonel wanted co-write and all the publishing; she said no but it broke her heart and made her really nervous...
now she's thrilled...that thing went hugely hugmongus huge with the single, the album and the movie (yeh not exactly kubrick or anything) cause she kept her own publishing and authorship and ended up in the middle of this huge phenomemon with that one song. Dolly has more smarts and balz than half the men in the world and all the men in country music. and more money too.

I used to think that the success of the soundtrack for The Bodyguard was a nadir in popular culture, but then a friend reminded me that it made Nick Lowe a very, very, very wealthy man.

Yeah, that's the case. But I always wondered... what about 1962-1966 (and also maybe 1967-1970) by The Beatles. Those are 2 discs but way under 100 minutes BUT also multiplied by the number of discs.

Bridges To Babylon: 3.5/4 million worldwide (1.5/2m Europe, 1.2m US, 200k Argentina/Brazil, 200k Australia/Japan, 150k Canada)

A Bigger Bang: 2.2/2.5 million worldwide (1.2m Europe, 550k USA, 100k Argentina/Brazil, 150k Australia/Japan, 100k Canada)

Staggering that ABB sold twice as many in Europe as the US - yet they played over twice as many shows in the US than Europe - and actually played more of the songs there on a regular basis
