What Does Keith Think Of The New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders?
Date: August 30, 2007 00:43

Has Keith ever commented on The Dolls or Johnny Thunders? What's his opinion about them? The Dolls were very influenced by The Stones and Keith was Johnny Thunders' idol so I wonder if Keith was ever asked about his opinion about Johnny and The Dolls. Does anyone know?

I remember reading an interview with The Dolls' drummer Jerry Nolan, who was Johnny's best friend, in which he said that he met Keef somewhere a few months after Johnny died and Keith told Jerry that he was sorry that his friend passed away. I wonder if Johnny ever met Keith.

Johnny certainly met Keith when he was a young'un, pre-Dolls. He and his girlfriend at the time ,Janice, met him in a bar and Thunders saved his cigarette pack, or butt, or something, after Keith left. This was either in London or maybe Nobody's in New York. It's recounted in the great Dolls bio by Nina Antonia, 'Too Much Too Soon'. He was also visible in the MSG crowd scenes in 'Gimme Shelter' ( wearing red shirt and sitting on someone's shoulders ). Guess that doesn't exactly answer the question "what did Keith think about the Dolls" but anyway...

The first Dolls album was the greatest Stones album they never made. Right up there with Wandering Spirit.

I'm tired, I'm tired of doing what I'm told.
Things are moving way too slow.

I know late '88 a friend asked Johnny what he thought of Keith's album. Telling this story ten years after the fact brought about a lot of laughter but we were all wasted and I don't remember how Johnny responded. My friend is dead now so I can't ask him.

There was talk of the Dolls being signed to Rolling Stones records. The two Mick's went to check them out, but didn't like them. Thunders is my all time hero as well, and yes the Groovies were a great band. Slow Death sounds like it would have been right at home on Exile.

I love the Flamin' Groovies! "Teenage Head" is my favourite album by them. Great band with a very Stonesy sound.

Back to the New York Dolls topic, I remember reading a quote from Mick Jagger in which he said that "The New York Dolls are like an updated version of The Pretty Things".

Interview with Johnny Thunders:

"Everything comes from somebody. I mean, Keith Richards took it from Chuck Berry and I took it from Keith Richards".

It's been obvious that Jagger/ Stones didn't like them officialy.
They were too much of a Stones cliche.

But in reality I think they liked them!

Btw - I liked F.Groovies "Shake some Action"!

Why?

If I may answer for Come On, Thunders made really energetic, raw music, effortlessly, just like rock and roll should be. He just had that special feel, like he was a natural.

Anyone with a vague interest in rock n roll knows how great a guitar player Thunders was. Keith loves and feels rock n roll music deeply, that should answer your question.
They moved however in totally different circles, the Stones surrounded by English gentry and the Guinesses, Thunders surrounded by street punks like Sid and Nancy and Stiv Bators. The thing they had most in common was heroin but Kris Needs is probably the only guy they knew in common, write him an email and ask him smiling smiley

I'd like to recommend the - mostly accoustic - album "Hurt Me" Brilliant stuff....

...and this is supposed to be a quote from Mr. Richards re Thunders' death: "Guys that don't really know me, they're more likely to be the child of my image. That's something I have to think about, because I'm not exactly like that. Chasing an image is a dangerous game" (Mark Paytress: "The Rolling Stones - Off the Record", p. 368; I'd like to recommend this book - it's a fantastic read)

But - in fact - it could be about anyone, eh? Izzy Straddlin, Joe Perry et al.

huh?! Mr Ronnie Wood doesn't fit in the "guys that don't know Keith" category.
smile: although Mr Ronnie Wood did once say about the proliferation of would-be "Keithalikes":
"they try to look like Keith but end up looking like me" :E

That's the difference for me, Keith sure dug Chuck Berry, but he didn't go around cloning his wardrobe and assuming a Chuck like lifestyle based on newspaper headlines.

I think that to think JT was nothing more than a Keith clone is very superficial. The Dolls created their own style, and Johnny's post-Dolls look is also very much his own. He certainly admired and was influenced by Keith, but he was arguably just as influenced by, if not moreso, groups that his sister turned him onto, like the Shangri-La's. As far as chemicals, Johnny did not fall into heroin addiction trying to emulate Keith. He had his own set of unfortunate circumstances that led him there. (Look to death of bandmate Billy Murcia, earlier issues with methamphetamine, refusal by his ex-wife to allow Johnny access to his children).

Keith = the greatest rock guitarist ever.
Johnny = one of the greatest rock guitarists ever.
