Sorry, folks, I'm in a strange mood tonight. This tune, performed by The Chieftains with Jagger on vocals, is a keeper. It is yet another example of how Mick's unique singing talents can be exhibited outside of the framework of the Stones.

I could easily hear Mick performing some old-time folk songs, whether they be of old country or new country origins.

Its a terrific version of a great song. He really does a great job of it.

The Band did a good cover of it as well.

Dylan and Springsteen (on the Seeeger sessions tour last year) have also done really lovely versions of it live .

I was surprised Bruce didnt play it at any of his 5 Irish dates last year.

An extremely well-written song - great story. Many nice versions, including the one you speak of. The awesome Leonard Keringer sent me a couple of live versions of the Georgia Satellites doing this.

I really like how the different artists have great versions that are unique in their own ways.

Yes Elmo, G&S may be Ronnie's finest moment on the gee-tar..and Lanes basswork aint too shabby either.

Johnny Cash does it too but the Band's is the one that touches the soul.

Nick Cave does a spiffing job on it too (Kicking Aginst the Pricks)

Phenomenal performance and song,I actually thought it's some kind of traditional Irish song until I found it's actually country.But this version is so haunting and mystic,nothing compares with it!One of the most romantic songs ever.

Oh, yessss!! Great song - also his (Wolf's) collaboration with Keef from the same album "Too Close Together" is fantastic. Sounds like a lot of fun was had.

Is the entire album worth having - or is it just these two songs? ;-)

As do the Louvin Brothers, who were a big influnence on the Everly Brothers and Gram Parsons, they alos did teh Christian Life as coverd by Gram and the Byrds.

"Long Black Veil" is a fantastic song. Never heard the Cheiftain's version but I love the Band's version. It's just a great song. Very well written. One of my all time favorites.

Gentlemen's live version a listen; it's on their "On the Road" cd and

was recorded on April 13th, 1962 . John Duffey's high lonesome vocals

never fail to send shivers down my spine, and as if that isn't enough

they even add some ghostly echo towards the end of the song!

Where did Mick record this song? I have only heard Johnny Cash's version.

It is on the Chieftains cd "The Long Black Veil" released 1995

the tracks with the Stones were recorded at Windmill Lane & Westland Studios,

Dublin and Metropolis Studios, London.

The cd also includes "The Rocky Road To Dublin" with the Rolling Stones,and

"Love Is Teasin'" with Marianne Faithfull !

The Stones are pictured with the Chieftains on the inner sleeve !

Interestingly, the Wikipedia article states that TLBV was originally recorded with Bono doing the vocals, but his tracks were removed and Jagger sang over the existing instrumental track. So, is it possible that the "ghost" vocals are remainders of the original Bono track?

Anyone have any definitive info?

It's a must to mention the riff of Satisfaction in "Rocky Road To Dublin". I think it was a nice touch/joke.
I never cared for Irish music but this album is simply great.

BTW, Cash's version from the Folsom LP is great. There's a bit of humor in it, too, as Johnny asks for some water after he finishes the song. It's a classic Cash moment.

Gram also recorded Charlie Louvin's 'Cash on the Barrelhead'

On the top of my head I think Lefty Frizzel must have recorded 'Long Black Veil' as well

One of the great lyrics. The Band version is the best. The moment when you realize the narrator is speaking from beyond the grave still makes me shiver

Can't remember her name, but the woman who wrote LBV was Ronnie's [of Ronnie and the Daytonas "Little GTO" fame] mother.
