OT: The Beatles' Rooftop Show 1969
Posted by: bassplayer617 ()
Date: August 18, 2007 01:27

This was posted on You Tube, and I got the whole thing. Watching the third segment, which is "I Dig A Pony", I noticed Ringo's eyes. Either he was hungover, or was drunk at the time.

We all now know that Ringo had an alcohol problem throughout his Beatles days, but right here you can see how it affected him. The thing is, his playing was excellent.

The entire sequence is:

1. Get Back
2. Don't let Me Down
3. I Got A Feeling
4. One After 909
5. I Dig A Pony
6. Get Back II

There is a guy in a white rain coat at :38 of the first video. He is Ken Mansfield, the then head of the US division of Apple Records. I had the pleasure of meeting him last October and spent an evening with him and his wife. He has some great stories to tell about spending a lot of time with the Beatles. We even talked about the rooftop concert a bit.

Was there overdubs on this or something, there playing seems too perfect and doesn't quite look like its 100 percent real or at least they fixed it up a bit. Maybe its just crappy video work.

Overdubs? I think not. Crappy synchronization (1969 technolgy), probably. As far as I can tell, that's the actual sound. Those guys could play a bit LOL.

They stole the idea from Jefferson Airplane, who played a rooftop at least a year earlier...no worries, tho, as its still a good idea...

No bitterness or jealousy in THAT post at all (ahem). Get over it, bubba. The Beatles will be eternal, whether you like it or not.

Jealousy? Over the Beatles? I doubt it.
I know everyone likes different things, and alot of you seem to like both the Beatles and the Stones. I've never seen the reason for the big Beatle love myself though, and surely no reason for their to be jealousy. Sure they have some good songs, but I've never heard anything by them that came anything close to the Stones for me.

That's all there is to it really. It's impossible to overlook the impact and greatness of the Beatles. And they sure did a fine gig on that rooftop.

Absolutely!
The Beatles is far above anything else, that they're nearly of out of sight :-)
They're the greatest recording act ever, just count the numbers.
But the Stones is the greatest rock'n'roll live band.
So please don't compere the two, it's not possible.

In the sixties i was a real Beatles fanespecially from Sg Pepper but i as not really interested in the Stones until Let it Bleed, i think i was 15 or 16 at the time. I went to london for a day trip and heard it playing through lots of shops sound systems and then i was hooked. When the Beatles broke up I was devistated so i became a real Stones fan and have followed them ever since. they are a real part of my life now and i don't quite know how I will feel when they are not around anymore.

Excactly. The only difference being that the Beatles stopped, when they were in the their prime, if they had continued they propably would have gone downhill as well. But then we for a few years had some great solo albums from John Lennon and George Harrison and one or two over the years from Paul McCartney.

the rooftop wasn´t really planned, they wanted to play on a boat or in a theatre in greece or in the desert but it didn´t happen. But to play a live gig they decided to go to the roof. No overdubbs and Ringo got a real problem with alcohol in the 70´s

i allways thought that the auld gut in the hat and pipe, who climbs up who watches from a nearby rooftop was a dead ringer for the Prime Misister Howard Wilson.

Sensational spontaneous show. Showed how much better musicians the Beatles were than the Stones back then.

This gig is proof to me that the Beatles were never that great of a live band. Fantastic studio group, but no energy live.

One of my favourite bootlegs is a thing called "The Complete 2CD Rooftop Concert". How can a 42 minute performance fill 2 CDs? When you have the complete, unedited audio recordings from ALL FOUR cameras that were used to film the Beatles that day. You get the sound from the camera that was on the roof, the sound from the camera that was on the roof of the building on the other side of the street, the sound from the camera that was inside the ground floor reception area of the Apple office building on which they were playing, and, most hilariously, the sound from the camera that was used to film the reactions of passersby in the street below. These typically went something like this:

Q: Do you know who you're listening to right now?
A: Is it the Beatles?
Q: Yes, and were you aware that this is their first live performance in quite some time?
A: You call this a performance? I can't even see them!
Q: Well it's a live listening then. Are you enjoying the music you're hearing?
A: No, not really.

What's amazing about these man in the steet reactions is that although most of the people interviewed know that it's the Beatles, no one seems to really give a shit! They all say things like "Is that the Beatles? It doesn't SOUND like them!" No one is particulary impressed. More remarkably, no one is aware IN THE SLIGHTEST that this is "their first live performance in quite some time"!

Yeah it is too bad they did'nt keep touring. That's actually a pretty good setlist for 6 songs. I love Dig A Pony.

That "setlist" is incomplete. They played Get Back three times. They played Don't Let Me Down and I've Got A Feeling twice. Dig A Pony and One After 909 were each played once. See, it wasn't really a "concert". More like an outdoor recording session.

The actual setlist:

Get Back
Get Back
Don't Let Me Down
I've Got A Feeling
One After 909
Dig A Pony
I've Got A Feeling
Don't Let Me Down
Get Back

...and, of course, some of these ended up on the "Let It Be" LP, but "Get Back" isn't one of them -- Phil Spector ended up using some of the dialogue, but the song itself is from one of the studio versions. There's more, but I don't have any reference sources handy.

The list I presented in the first posting is what's on the "Let It Be" movie.

The version of Get Back the opens the concert in the Let It Be movie is actually a splice job. It's the the first half of the first version edited onto the the second half of the second version.
