A night to remember...almost

Hi - I'm a new member. Been looking at the board a while and figured it was time I joined up.

I have a story that will probably only appeal to you people. A story that makes me kick myself whenever I think about it. (Ouch!) Apologies for how convulted this is but I'm not likely to put this in writing again, so...

I was living in Kyoto, near Osaka, Japan during '98 when the Stones first played in that part of the country during the B2B tour. I'd been trying to get hold of tix but to no avail. As it turned out, a friend of mine - a lovely Jamaican lady named Sandy who worked in a tiny bar in the Gion district of Kyoto, already had a single ticket but couldn't go due to work. Knowing I was a huge fan - she offered it to me a few days before the show. (One of those lucky breaks).

The night before the show I returned home to find that I'd had several messages from her saying I had to call urgently (pre-mobile phone days for me). My suspicious nature led me to believe she'd managed to get off work and wanted her ticket back. (Needless to say I didn't call her).

So next day I went to the show, where I managed to bluff my way right down to the front row (being a foreigner in Japan has some advantages). Of course, the band was fantastic. I returned home to my girlfriend (we'd had a fight earlier where I was accused of loving the Stones more than her!) who was sitting with a huge smirk on her face. Was I forgiven??..

Well - it turned out that the mystery phone calls from Sandy the night before were due to the fact that Mick Jagger himself had arrived at her bar with a couple of geisha girls and a Japanese record exec. Apparently Mick instantly began flirting with Sandy (she's very attractive) and telling her about his visits to Jamaica. She told him how sad she was that she couldn't go to the show but that she'd given her ticket to a 'fellow-Londoner' who is a huge fan. To quote her, Mick said. "Well, why don't you give him a call and get him down here for a drink." (!!!) An unlikely request you'd think but according to Sandy he seemed bored with his Japanese associates - geisha girls don't speak too much - and was curious to meet a Londoner in Kyoto. So while I was elsewhere smug in the knowledge that I had secured my ticket for the following night (by ignoring all those annoying phone calls - so I thought), Sandy was knocking back Martinis with Mick!!

When I next saw Sandy I had numerous photos of her and Mick waved mockingly in my face (No I don't have copies unfortunately). Damn! What makes me so gutted is that this wouldn't have been some fleeting encounter in a hotel lobby somewhere - this would have been kicking back in a quiet exclusive bar, shooting the breeze with one of my all-time heroes.

There's a moral in there somewhere.

Anyway - that's my little story. (My shins are well and truly bruised).

Let me tell you ... you deserved it!

Just imagine if she really had made it to free herself and actually wanted to go to the show.

I would have killed for more futile reasons ...

yeh - I think you could call it 'karmic retribution'.

I did have more luck a few years earlier though when I was in Sticky Fingers restaurant for my birthday.

My friend spotted Bill sitting with some people in a corner booth and proceeded to go up and tell him he was here celebrating the birthday of a big fan. Not wanting to disturb the man's dinner I was reluctantly dragged to his table where I somehow managed to slide in next to Bill for a quick photo and exchange of pleasantries (I remember he had a plate of uneaten food and an ashtray full of fag butts in front of him).

Just after the photo was taken I realised that sitting on the opposite side of the table was non other than Mick Taylor! It was at this point that I lost all semblance of cool and mumbled something like, "Wow...it's you".

That WAS a more successful night. Sitting at a table, even for a brief moment, with the 2 surviving ex-members of the Stones.

You certainly would/should/could kick yourself!
But at least you did see the show!

ps
Don't ever let her think that you love the Stones more than her.

Ugh - that story made me sick. I think I would have killed myself to find out I had missed an opportunity like that.

I don't care how hot those demure little geisha's were, Mick would have been going home with me! I know he probably likes Sandy's looks more, but after I slipped her a Mickey and got rid of her, he would have been mine, all mine BWAAAAHHAAAAA

Yes, and the moral is don't ignore your friends' calls ... until after you've screened them and made sure there's nothing in it for you.

Cindy, I think it's cool that you can figure out a way to spell a word like "BWAAAAHHAAAAA"!

Team America was hilarious, I'd forgotten that line until you mentioned it. One of many memorable quotes (for those who didn't kill too many brain cells) in the movie.

Roll73!!! Why did you ignore the phone messages?
Even if she wanted her ticket back...she wouldn't know
that you listened but ignored her.

like other post-ers said....i would have done some damage had
i found out I had missed an opportunity like that.

and here we have the opportunity to live vicariously
through other's good fortunes. ugh!

btw...cindy...do you have the "unrated version" of Team America?
a puppet literally gets $hitfaced. hilarious.

OF COURSE! I think I pee'd my pants laughing the first time I saw that scene. I dare anyone to try and not laugh at that scene. I couldn't find a good version to post on Youtube unfortunately.

Matt Damon.

Yes, michrud - I'm being 100% honest. I was living in a guesthouse at the time with a communal phone with no answer machine - just bits of paper stuck on my door saying "CALL SANDY"

ho hum
